Justin Simien isn’t just the creator of the acclaimed independent film and Netflix series “Dear White People” — he’s also a giant fan of “Star Trek,” a love which extends to “Discovery,” the CBS All Access series.
As the writer and director told IndieWire a few weeks ago, he believes that “Star Trek: Discovery” is “one of the best shows on television right now,” and had plenty of praise for everything from star Sonequa Martin-Green to the show’s color palette to its costumes — specifically, the Starfleet uniform boots work by the cast: “I need the boots that they’re wearing. Like, so bad,” he said.

After getting diverted en route to a prison mine, coming on board the Discovery isn’t Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) biggest surprise. She’s also shocked to see former Shenzhou crewmate Saru (Doug Jones) is on board, this time as the First Officer. The Kelpien is a brand new alien race that’s been introduced to the series, but not much is known about them except that they’re a prey species.

On CBS All Access’ “After Trek” Sunday night, “Star Trek: Discovery” executive producer Aaron Harberts said that this season wouldn’t delve too deeply into the Kelpien race or their planet, but would reveal certain aspects through the development of Saru as a character. “Star Trek: Discovery” opened strong in its initial CBS airing, averaging 9.6 million viewers. CBS expects that number to grow to 15 million viewers once seven days of DVR and video on-demand usage is included.
That wide exposure was key for CBS in promoting the CBS All Access home for “Star Trek: Discovery.” From this point forward, new episodes will only be available on the digital platform.
Already on Sunday, CBS All Access broke a new record for subscriber sign-ups in a single day, surpassing the previous record held by this year’s Grammy Awards.
That means fans were apparently ready when CBS debuted its new series “Star Trek: Discovery” in two parts Sunday night. The first episode was available for everyone to watch on broadcast on CBS at 8:30 p.m. Et and ended on a cliffhanger that was concluded in the second episode, available only on CBS All Access.

Writer/director Sam Raimi was on this week's Nerdist podcast with Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray, and Matt Mira earlier this week, and the "Evil Dead" director was refreshingly open about some of the mistakes he made with "Spider-Man 3." Raimi was one of the first indie directors to be tapped for a major franchise, and while "Spider-Man" and its sequel were fairly well received, "I messed up plenty with the third 'Spider-Man," Raimi told the Nerdist folks.
Raimi said, "It's a movie that just didn't work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn't really believe in all the characters, so that can't be hidden from people who loved 'Spider-Man.' If the director doesn't love something, it's wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it." He added that trying to raise the stakes even higher for the third film was "what doomed us.

While chatting with Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray and Matt Mira during the latest Nerdist podcast (click here to listen), director Sam Raimi ("Army Of Darkness") reflected on some of his past mistakes. Most notable, 2007's Spider-Man 3, which tried to stuff Venom (Topher Grace), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and James Franco's Green Goblin all into one movie in an ill-fated attempt to top much beloved Spider-Man 2. An hour into the podcast Raimi admits that the Spider-Man 3 was "awful" and that he had "made the wrong story, the wrong way." You can read some of it below, thanks to pajiba.com for transcribing a portion of it. It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well. CBS has set up a site for fans of How I Met Your Mother to send a farewell message through various social media sites. The collection of sentiment is enough to make me stop muttering about how the comedy should have ended seasons ago.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss tell EW that they see a seven-season run for the fantasy drama. “Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us.” I’d find that comforting, but that also leaves a good amount of time for things to go wrong.
Then again, how wrong can things get as long as Lady Olenna keeps dropping the quips.
Based on my experience with The Vampire Diaries, my reaction to hearing about the surprise departure on The Originals was a shrug, but that’s based entirely on how irritating the character was on The Vampire Diaries. For...

The superheroes are taking over YouTube. For the fourth day of Geek Week, the world's largest video sharing site shined its spotlight on comic book heroes, with some exclusive debuts and special guests coming together on 'Super Wednesday'. As usual, the first place worth looking is the daily wrap-up video. Today's host: Matt Mira of Nerdist. Luckily, his hosting skills are better than his bowling skills. What would a superhero celebration be without Stan Lee? In addition to being the greatest living creator of superhero fiction, Lee is also a YouTube star thanks to his popular World of Heroes YouTube Original Channel. World of Heroes was out in full force today, offering alternative endings to some popular Marvel franchises and another video that brings Lee's memorable cameo appearances to the world of video games. An upcoming superhero film also made a splash, as Marvel debuted the full trailer for Thor: The Dark World.

We’re starting a new series of posts here at SciFi Mafia that we’re calling Web Series Wednesday where we devote a space to the wonderment of the web series. Every Wednesday we’ll cover two awesome web series shows and give you all the info to get into them.
If you’ve got a favorite web series you’d like us to cover, head on over to the Contact Us page and shoot us your request.
This week we’re covering School of Thrones and Course of the Force.

Nerdist is hosting its 2nd annual Course of the Force, a charity relay right before Comic-Con with all proceeds going to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. This year, the web outpost that celebrates all things nerdy is producing a web series with Broadway Video (the "SNL" production company) that should appeal directly to Nerdist fans who also love "Star Wars" (who are we kidding -- that's all Nerdist fans).
In this first episode, Matt Mira is dancing to Justin Timberlake with R2-D2 (you know, like normal) when Moshe Kasher informs him that the lightsaber that will be used for the Course of the Force has gone missing. Chris Hardwick -- in a Princess Leia costume, for some reason -- sends a transmission to Matt to help him find it.
Check out the clip above to watch the first episode, and tune in next week to watch the second installment.

The Nerdist is living up to its name with a new show based around Star Wars. Chris Hardwick's channel has released the first episode of Course of the Force, a six-part web series leading into the second annual charity run to Comic-Con of the same name. The series stars the main personalities of Nerdist Industries, including Hardwick and Matt Mira, along with a nice little cameo appearance from R2D2. We all know that R2 can fix hyperdrives and deliver interstellar messages, but Course of the Force shows us that he can also do a mean Borat impression. The series is a joint production between Nerdist and Lucasfilm (although the series only uses a knockoff version of the iconic Star Wars theme), so R2 may not be the only character to show up. Nerdist will release the last Course of the Force episode by July 9th, allowing the series...

In case you missed our earlier story, zombies are invading BBC America's "The Nerdist" this weekend, and we have two more sneak peeks of The Walking Dead comics creator Robert Kirkman's appearance on the show.
In these new videos first Kirkman differentiates between The Walking Dead comic book and the blockbuster hit TV show - and why he calls the show "a do-over," and then he discusses one "really cool shocking moment" from the comic book that has come to challenge him in writing future scenes: "Nope, can't button a shirt...!"
Catch an all new episode of "The Nerdist" this Saturday, April 6, at 10/9c on BBC America. Along with Kirkman and "The Walking Dead" TV series star Michael Rooker, you'll see a zombified Karen Gillan ("Doctor Who"), and "resident zombie expert" Jonah Ray goes into detail on what suggestions would make for the best zombie weaponry in case of an apocalypse.

Until then, we have a few bits and pieces of the pilot for you to check out, as well as a clip from star Tatiana Maslany‘s appearance on the premiere of The Nerdist, which follows directly after the premiere of Orphan Black.

This is a cool development. BBC America has ordered a full season of The Nerdist, the geeky goofy and at least partially cool talk show that started out as a podcast with Chris Hardwick, as part of the Supernatural Saturday programming block. The network has featured several specials by The Nerdist, but this will apparently be an entire ten episode season of the regular show.
Here are the current details, along with a nice outline of how The Nerdist has evolved, if you didn’t know already:

BBC America is expanding its relationship with Chris Hardwick‘s Nerdist franchise, with the network ordering a full season of comedy-variety talk show The Nerdist based on Hardwick’s hit podcast. The 10-episode season will be shot in La and feature celebrity guests, UK and U.S.-based correspondents, and stand-up and musical performances. It will debut in spring 2013 as part of BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday block that includes Doctor Who, Being Human and new original series Orphan Black. Hardwick will also host the programming block beginning in the spring. Bba America aired a collection of Nerdist-branded specials this year; Matt Mira and Jonah Ray, Chris’s partners in the podcast, will return as contributors. The Nerdist will continue to be produced by Nerdist Industries and Comcast Entertainment Studios, with Hardwick, Alex Murray, Jay James, Gary Snegaroff and K.P. Anderson executive producing. The Nerdist marks the latest original programming move at BBC America,...

I recently joined Bobak Ferdowsi, flight director on the Mars rover Curiosity mission, on G4's "Attack of the Show" to talk space exploration and the future of science with host Matt Mira.
During the interview, Bobak told us about his adorably nerdy first kiss! Check out the video above for the juicy details. Have you ever been to space camp? Tell us about it in the comments section below. Come on, talk nerdy to me!

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.
For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.
See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.

Another day, another Comic-Con schedule! Are you ready to plan out our Saturday at this years convention!? Once again there's a ton of great panels going on including Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, The Hobbit, Marvel TV, Django Unchained, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and more!
Saturday has shaped up to be a hell of a great day for those of you attending Comic-Con. I've put *** next to all of the panels that we want to attend, but like every year, I'm sure we'll be covering a lot more stuff.
We'll be wearing our GeekTyrant shirts, so if you see us walking around San Diego and the convention center, please stop and and say hi! We'd love to meet our readers. We will also be holding our annual meet-up on Wednesday night before the crazy geek storm.
Check out the schedule below and let us know what panels you'll be attending,...

The formal announcement has been made for Brent Hartinger's Geography Club movie. It's going to star Cameron Deane Stewart, Justin Deeley, Andrew Caldwell, Allie Gonino, Meaghan Martin, Ally Maki and Nikki Blonsky. Geography Club tells the story of teens who feel like outcasts due to their sexual orientation, and the teacher who forms a club for them to meet without suspicion. I'm going to try and talk to Brent in the coming days about the film, and will keep you updated.

We love that BBC America knows its audience well enough to promote the new Nerdist special by posting a video about Doctor Who. As you may recall, Chris Hardwick, aka The Nerdist, hosted the BBC America Doctor Who “Best of” specials (Doctor Who: Best of the Monsters, etc.) last August.
The next will be a Doctor Who: Best of the Christmas Specials to air on Christmas Eve, followed by a year-end special. To promote the specials, BBC America asked him and his pals about their favorite Doctor Who moments from season six. Check out the video and press release below for all the details on the special!

“Wow, what’s the deal with The Silents and these guys? What about “The Doctor’s Wife”? “A Good Man Goes to War”? Stay here with SciFi Mafia and we’ll show you someone...
