Pop culture has long mimicked pageantry. It’s reflected in Taylor Swift’s sequined leotard, Beyoncé’s unmistakable strut, and even Margot Robbie’s twinkling grin in Barbie. The melangé of glam and controversy in pageantry encouraged The New York Times’ Lauren Herstik to co-produce the documentary How to Fix a Pageant.
“You have things like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé and Barbie this year each earning a billion dollars, or just about to get there,” Herstik tells Rolling Stone. “There’s a lot of connections between that kind of culture...

FX unveiled a first look at “Fargo” Season 5 while revealing premiere dates for its fall slate of shows on FX and FX on Hulu.
The new season of “Fargo” premieres Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on FX and takes place in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019. Per the official synopsis, after an unexpected series of events lands Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon (Juno Temple) in hot water with the authorities, this seemingly typical Midwestern housewife is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.
Jon Hamm plays North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman, who has been searching for Dot for a long time and has his feckless son Gator (played by “Stranger Things” star Joe Keery) at his side. David Rysdahl plays Dot’s well-meaning husband, while Jennifer Jason Leigh fills the role of Dot’s disapproving mother-in-law, who runs the biggest debt collection agency in the country.

Exclusive: HBO Max is not moving forward with half-hour family comedy pilot Camp Friends (working title).
I hear production on the pilot, which was greenlighted late last year, was paused over positive Covid tests and never resumed. Restarting production after a shutdown is very costly, especially for a modestly budgeted half-hour pilot for Camp Friends. Instead, I hear the producers supplemented the completed footage with animation and storyboards. The pilot was delivered to HBO Max executives who ultimately decided not to pick it up to series.
Camp Friends was written by Lauren Herstik and produced by Adam Goodman for Invisible Narratives and Jax Media.
The comedy revolves around four lifelong “camp friends” during their highly anticipated counselor-in-training summer. When a mysterious new girl arrives late from another camp, the girls’ plan to have The Best Summer Ever gets thrown into disarray. Camp Friends live 10 months for two. Now that things are different,...

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...
