Makalla McPherson is a writer/director from London. Makalla wrote her debut play When the lights go out for The Oval Theatre in 2018 which was supported by The Arts Council. Makalla was mentored by Coky Giedroyc whilst spending time on the set of BBC Drama, What remains. She was later selected for The Creative Diversity Network scheme and mentored by Executive Producer, Sarah Brown. Makalla has since gone on to direct award-winning TV drama, Waterloo Road and was the main and second unit director on Shondaland's 2023 award winning Netflix series, Queen Charlotte Last year, she also directed the Disney, C4 & Onyx adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams' best-selling novel, Queenie. She directed an episode of S2 series of the new Dr Who, starring Ncuti Gatwa.
