Sigourney Weaver is in talks to star in the upcoming Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Word of Weaver’s involvement became public on Friday, first reported by The InSneider newsletter. Currently, her role and its scope are unknown, but given Weaver’s track record for starring in sci-fi hits, the casting feels appropriate.
The Mandalorian & Grogu was first announced this past January, and will see Pedro Pascal reprise the titular role that he originated with the 2019 Disney+ series The Mandalorian. N0w, making the jump to the big screen, the film will expand upon the show’s universe (which also spurred the spinoff series Ahsoka).
Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian, will return to direct the film, which also marks the first feature-length Star Wars release since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni will produce, as will Favreau.

Avatar: The Way of Water introduced the mystery of Kiri's parentage, and now, a new theory explained her father's identity and its impact on Avatar 3 and beyond.
In addition to Jake and Neytiri's biological children in Avatar 2, the franchise introduced Spider and Kiri, the latter who was played by Sigourney Weaver.
The sequel confirmed Weaver's original Avatar character, Dr. Grace Augustine, was Kiri's mother; but it only raised questions about the identity of her father and Kiri's own identity.

It’s time to return to Pandora. Moviegoers who watched the original Avatar movie when it premiered in theaters back in 2009 can finally see the follow-up to the highest-grossing movie in history at home. James Cameron’s epic sequel, Avatar 2, or more officially called Avatar: The Way of Water, arrived in theaters on Dec. 16, and it’s the second and highly anticipated chapter in a multi-movie franchise.

Michelle Rodriguez has refused to let James Cameron even entertain the idea of bringing her back to the Avatar series, citing too many resurrections of her past characters in other film franchises.
The Fast and Furious actress was apparently unmoved by the record-breaking box office hauls of the 2009 film in which she played the sympathetic, pro-Na’vi combat pilot Trudy Chacón, and its similarly successful 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. So, she recalled to Vanity Fair, when she ran into Cameron and he told her “‘I was thinking, “What if Michelle came back? A lot of the other characters came back [in The Way of Water].”‘ I was like, ‘You can’t do that — I died as a martyr.'”
Aside from not wanting to tarnish the noble ending given to her character, Rodriguez’s insistence was both a career and creative-based decision. She says that she told Cameron, “‘I came back in Resident Evil,...

Of course, she re-teamed with Cameron for Avatar and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. And, she told us, one of the reasons why she wanted to work with Cameron again was because she knew he’d give her an incredible role to play. "Avatar: The Way of Water" has taken over the world. Just last week, the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster passed the 2 billion worldwide box office mark. This means James Cameron has directed three of the four top-grossing films of all time — a phenomenal showing for a film that the echo chambers of the internet were convinced was doomed from the beginning. For those of us who have seen the movie, it's obvious why it has resonated with so many audiences around the world.
As strange and abrasive as Cameron's vision of Pandora is, "Avatar: The Way of Water" focuses on emotional truth, which helps the alien world and its characters find universal appeal. In addition, the completely CG environment and the eccentric creatures within it evoke a feeling of natural wonder, something that we crave in our mundane, technologically driven lives. Sometimes, being the highest-grossing film of all time ain't all it's cracked up to be.
The reputation of James Cameron's "Avatar" seemed straightforward enough upon its release in 2009, rapidly turning into a word-of-mouth sensation and displaying a historically strong staying power week-in and week-out the likes of which we've rarely seen before -- well, not since Cameron's own "Titanic," that is. But shock and awe at the otherworldly images of the tropical moon Pandora and the blue-skinned Na'vi who called it home steadily turned into something else entirely after the film finally wrapped up its lengthy theatrical run and, according to a vocal group of detractors,...

Upon hearing the prospect of not just one but four more "Avatar" films in our future, there were many cynical people online who wondered whether or not there could even be enough story to warrant that many films, let alone whether or not people even wanted to see another film in the series. Well, considering that "Avatar: The Way of Water" is on its way to passing 2 billion worldwide pretty soon, obviously people are still into the world of Pandora.
As for where the story can go, James Cameron has devised a structure for the series that will allow it to evolve and remain fresh with each subsequent movie. Sam Worthington's Jake Sully was the narrator of the first two "Avatar" films, but he will not remain in that position going forward. James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar" sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," has already made enormous waves at the box office, and rightfully so. The special effects extravaganza is a terrific piece of spectacle, action, and drama rendered via Cameron's artistic flourishes, resulting in one of 2022's best films and one of the most impressive motion pictures ever realized. Indeed, "The Way of Water" deserves to be seen again and again on the big screen, where its luscious visuals and extreme action pop in good ole fashioned 3D.
As a huge James Cameron fan, I'm ecstatic that "Avatar" is breaking new ground. I've already seen it a handful of times and plan to revisit it more in the coming weeks. That said, each viewing raises questions regarding certain aspects of the picture that are a little wonky. While I appreciate the dedication to his technical craft,...

We all remember where we were when it was revealed that Sigourney Weaver would be playing a teenage Na'vi named Kiri in "Avatar: The Way of Water." This casting is genuinely one of the most exciting and inspired casting decisions I've heard in a while, and what makes it even cooler is that the character of Kiri is somehow connected to her previous role of Dr. Grace Augustine. The fact that this is a prominent story thread proves you should never bet against the madness of James Cameron. Of course, Weaver is still a few decades older than Kiri in the film, and if we learned anything from "The Irishman," it's that covering a performance with special effects might not be able to mask obvious age discrepancies.

The first "Avatar" is a rather simple film. As monumentally innovative or visually stunning as the film was, there is a reason why the plot is often compared to "Dances With Wolves" and "Pocahontas." With a script that follows films we've seen before and characters that felt a bit archetypical, there was little room for inner struggle or complex questions about ethics and morals because the bad guys were genocidal colonizers and the good guys were literally fighting for their existence.
Still, it is commendable that James Cameron made a giant blockbuster all about deforestation and the destruction of the environment. You see, James Cameron has a long history of environmentalism and activism, spending his vast fortune building intricate submarines to reach the deepest depths of the ocean, becoming a rather successful supplier of organic brassicas, and so much more.

When it was first revealed that Sigourney Weaver would return to the meticulously fabricated world of Pandora for the long-awaited sequel "Avatar: The Way of Water," it was unclear just how that could be possible. Weaver's fiery scientist, Grace Augustine -- a legendary xenobotanist in charge of the Avatar Program -- was unceremoniously shot and killed by Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) in the original "Avatar." A valiant attempt by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and the Na'vi to transfer Grace's consciousness into her lab-grown alien avatar in an untested ritual at the Tree of Souls proved unsuccessful. Was it possible that some of Grace's essence was downloaded into the complex web of roots that make up the life force known as Eywa? Would she be able to somehow communicate through the vast ecosystem that pulses throughout the entire planet of Pandora?...

It's been more than a decade since the first Avatar movie premiered and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Back in 2009, at the time of its release, I had just gotten my first Facebook account and flip phone. Since then, the world has gone through many sea changes - from three different US presidents to an unprecedented global pandemic.
Still, the Avatar world's return doesn't feel like a throwback. Even if there's another decade between this one and each of James Cameron's three planned additional installments, I imagine that their themes are just as resonant.
Of course, 30 years from now, we could be in dire environmental straits. The world is projected to have warmed by more than 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit since pre-industrial levels by then if we continue burning fossil fuels at the same rate that we currently are, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In “Avatar: The Way of Water,” Sigourney Weaver returns. But probably not in the way you expect.
When last we left Weaver, her character Dr. Grace Augustine, had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and, while they attempted to revive her, she ultimately died. When “Avatar: The Way of Water” opens, we realize that her Avatar (still in its tank) was pregnant. The father is unknown. But the young girl, Kiri (also played by Weaver) is quickly adopted into Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña)’s family. Together, Kiri and the rest of the Sully family do battle against the evil Rda and go into hiding with the planet’s reef people, where Kiri really comes into her own. It’s an amazing character, made even more amazing by the fact that Weaver is doing the performance capture for this teenage girl herself.

The following post contains heavy spoilers for "Avatar: The Way of Water."
James Cameron's "Avatar" is one of the purest forms of cinematic spectacle, a movie with vast world-building, rich mythology, and stunning action. Sure, the story isn't super complex or original, and the characters aren't the best-written or most well-rounded. In fact, a lot of the writing in the first film feels purposely thin, as if Cameron's goal was to include the bare minimum of story and the most archetypical characters so they could be universally understood, and not distract from the world-building and the visuals.
This changes in the sequel. "Avatar: The way of Water" pushes the franchise and blockbusters alike to the next level, with a movie that is in every way bigger, better, and more ambitious than the first one. Likewise, this is a movie with a much larger ensemble, a bigger scope, and a...
James Cameron's "Avatar" is one of the purest forms of cinematic spectacle, a movie with vast world-building, rich mythology, and stunning action. Sure, the story isn't super complex or original, and the characters aren't the best-written or most well-rounded. Spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water follow.
Ever since "Avatar" was released in 2009, creator and director James Cameron has promised that multiple sequels would follow. As the last 13 years rolled on, Cameron's insistence on the sequels coming to fruition began to resemble a boast more than a promise. However, just like George Lucas before him, Cameron was playing the long game when it came to his vision for the future of the planet Pandora and its inhabitants, and the second film (entitled "The Way of Water") has finally arrived.
Yet while Cameron's commitment to the series is now abundantly clear, what exactly will occur in the sequels has remained a mystery prior to the release of the new installment. It's wild to realize in today's landscape of films and shows saturated by previously existing IP, but there are no prior "Avatar" novels, comic books or video games that act...

Avatar: The Way Of Water
Along with Empire Of Light, this week’s film is also a bit of cinema nostalgia. No, it’s not about the beginning of Hollywood or a particular famous director, nor Like Eol a movie palace. That’s because it has something in common with this year’s (so far) biggest box office earner: it is a sequel several years after the original. Now it doesn’t come close to the 36 years between the Top Gun flicks, but 13 is a long stretch indeed. That’s when James Cameron followed up the, then, biggest film of all time, Titanic, with a film that surpassed it (at the time). And now after endless reports and rumors, official and unofficial announcements, the sequel to his Sf-fantasy epic is finally here (supposedly the first of at least four follow-ups). So dust off those 3D stereo specs for a return...

Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch met his end in 2009’s Avatar as did Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine but James Cameron resurrects the actors in a different form for Avatar: The Way Of Water. This time, Lang says there’s more satisfaction in playing a more complicated character, and the actor also reveals Cameron’s competitive side.

After sitting through hours upon hours of heavy dramas offered up for awards consideration, the escapism dished up by James Cameron with Avatar: The Way of Water felt like a burst of pure joy. Avatar: The Way of Water is a visually dazzling experience that needs to be seen on the largest screen possible, and in 3-D if it’s available.
James Cameron and his team have delivered a stunning sequel that outdoes its 2009 predecessor in every possible way. There are more spectacular action sequences, the characters are better developed, and the visual effects are groundbreaking. Cameron even managed to make the sequel more emotionally compelling, hitting all the right beats and allowing audiences to get lost in this make-believe world populated by the strange-looking blue Na’vi, the aquamarine-tinted Metkayina clan, and massive whales. Does anyone care about Avatar anymore? That’s the question that has vexed film critics and pop culture commentators in the 13 long years since James Cameron released his paradigm-shifting science fiction epic. While the 2009 film became the highest-grossing box office hit of all time (with a brief moment in which it was dethroned), re-introduced 3D to a new generation of moviegoers, and pushed the limits of CG technology, it has seemed to fade almost altogether from the zeitgeist during the past decade, replaced by the MCU, Stranger Things, the streaming revolution, and all kinds of other entertainment game-changers.
Meanwhile Cameron toiled steadily away, planning not just one Avatar sequel but four, while patiently waiting for visual effects to catch up again to the vision he had for further tales set on the moon named Pandora. Thanks to the re-release of Avatar itself earlier this fall in a striking new 4K remaster,...

It’s been 13 years since James Cameron introduced the world of Pandora to the audiences of Earth with “Avatar.” With its sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” finally set to debut on Dec. 16, it’s understandable that some people may not quite remember some, or maybe all, of the details from the first film.
For the record, “Avatar” is available to stream on Disney+, but if you don’t have the time to watch it again, Variety is here to fill in all the gaps before you return to Pandora, starting with its lead character, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington).
Who is Jake Sully?
He’s an ex-Marine who lost the use of his legs in combat on Earth. When his twin brother, Tommy, a scientist, dies unexpectedly, Jake is recruited by the Resources Development Administration (or Rda) to take Tommy’s place on Pandora, a lush alien moon in the...

Who cares about Avatar? No one quite seems to know. James Cameron’s 2009 behemoth, the highest-grossing film in the world until Avengers: Endgame a decade later, has been at the centre of a small cultural fracas in the lead-up to its Covid-delayed sequel. One half of the internet has fervently defended the film against claims by the other that it’s, as actor and podcast host Griffin Newman once coined, only “memorable for being unmemorable”. Where is its mark on the world? Where are the legions of fans strutting around in blue body paint and wiggly cat ears? Where are the imitators? Shouldn’t there have been a million more derivative films about aliens defending themselves from colonisation?
I can answer these questions no better than anyone else. But, sitting down 13 years later to watch Avatar: The Way of Water, after years of Cameron promising his follow-up would make us...

James Cameron knows his way around a sequel. With Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, he showed he could build on the strengths of franchise starters with brawny action, steadily ratcheted tension and jaw-dropping technological invention. He’s also a storyteller very much at home in H2O, harnessing both the majestic vastness of the oceans and the icy perils of the deep in Titanic and The Abyss.
So it should surprise no one that Avatar: The Way of Water — which includes echoes of all those earlier films — is a hugely entertaining follow-up to the 2009 sci-fi eco-thriller that remains the top-grossing movie of all time.
In terms of narrative sophistication and even more so dialogue, this 350 million sequel is almost as basic as its predecessor, even feeble at times. But the expanded, bio-diverse world-building pulls you in, the visual spectacle keeps you mesmerized,...

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is almost here, and the first reactions call it, well, exactly what you'd expect from James Cameron's follow-up to his 2009 sci-fi epic. It is often said that one should never bet against Jimmy Francis Cameron, and that's with good reason. He thrives on proving people wrong, on having the odds stacked against him, and then blowing audiences away with some of the most purely entertaining blockbusters of all time. With a week to go before the film's release, the first wave of reactions are calling the film an "awe-inducing masterclass in world-building," a "monumental filmmaking achievement" and "storytelling at its absolute finest."
This may not have been the most highly anticipated movie of the year, but it is arguably the biggest. This is a movie so big and costly it needs to be stupidly successful just to break even, a movie that is creating...

For those who were new to James Cameron on the set of his ambitious Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, his reputation preceded him.
But there were no surprises for Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver, who had previously worked with Cameron on two out of the three highest-grossing films of all time — Titanic and the original Avatar, respectively — and spoke of the high bar he sets for his cast, as well as a knack for writing powerful women.
“His capacity to create incredible female roles is just amazing,” Winslet told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s press junket in London. “These leaders, these women, they have power, they have physical strength, they have emotional gravitas. Thirteen years after James Cameron‘s Avatar broke every record out there and ushered in the revival of 3D movies, the long-awaited sequel hits theaters next week. The Way of Water, the first of at least five planned sequels, has a high bar to reach not only to match the acclaim and box office success of the original but to warrant the huge investment that James Cameron made in regard to his career. With all new technology and cutting-edge filmmaking on display, Avatar: The Way of Water is going to be a spectacle. I attended the press conference for the movie with James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang. Here are the big things you should know about the film.

We're a few weeks away from the return of the box office king, James Cameron. His newest film, "Avatar: The Way of Water," is our first return to the world of "Avatar" since the 2009 original. But what's a director without his muse? Working once again with Cameron is the incomparable Sigourney Weaver, this time playing the role of Jake Sully's (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) adopted 14-year-old Na'vi daughter, Kira, who may or may not be the reincarnation of Weaver's initial "Avatar" character, Grace Augustine.
Yeah, that's a lot of lore to take in at once. Weaver herself even admitted it took her a while to properly connect to the new material, though thankfully Cameron was there to give some tough love along the way. It might seem strange to have Weaver play a 14-year-old, but part of the beauty of the motion-capture technology that "Avatar" heavily uses...

Oh, James Cameron. What will he think of next?
Not only will "Avatar: The Way of Water" debut well over a decade after the original box office-smashing hit first arrived, but a number of familiar faces who we thought had kicked the bucket in the previous movie are set to join in on the action once more. First, there's the villain Miles Quaritch played by Stephen Lang, who will pull off his best Emperor Palpatine impression by "somehow" returning from the dead despite meeting his satisfying end near the end of the 2009 original. But even more improbably, the sequel is set to bring back Sigourney Weaver ... but as a completely different character altogether, and a young Na'vi at that. And that's not even the wildest part: She's playing the daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri. No, I still don't quite get it, either!
In any case, Cameron has more than...

Jc himself is back, baby! It's been over a decade, but your Pandora depression is about to be over, because the new trailer for "Avatar: The Way of Water" not only reaffirms Pandora may be the most gorgeous fictional place to be put on film, but teases a complex and epic family drama with plenty of magic, emotion — and is that a "Titanic" reference?
It is easy to understate how big of an event the first "Avatar" really was. Even outside of its monumental box office triumph, James Cameron's sci-fi epic was also responsible for the biggest boom in 3D films since the '80s had every third movie be titled "3D," not to mention causing people depression when they realized Pandora was not a real place they could visit.
Now, it is time to return to Pandora, and the latest trailer really makes it clear this is now a family affair.

"Avatar" is among the landmark films of the 21st century. Regardless of whether you love the movie or not, it's impossible to deny the cultural impact that James Cameron's 2009 science fiction epic had. The game-changing 3D technology and immersive special effects were unlike anything that audiences had ever seen before. It inspired viewers to keep going back to the theater so they could experience Pandora again and again.
It's impossible to talk about "Avatar" without mentioning its incredible run at the box office as it surpassed everyone's expectations to become the first movie to cross the 2 billion worldwide mark. Although it was briefly robbed of its title by 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," "Avatar" became the highest-grossing film of all-time once more thanks to a 2021 re-release. Following the groundbreaking release of “Avatar” in 2009, James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise about a humanoid species called the Na’vi is finally back with the first of several sequels. After a 13-year gap, the saga will pick up with “Avatar: The Way of Water” in December before continuing on with what are currently being dubbed “Avatar 3”, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” in 2024, 2026 and 2028, respectively.

“Avatar” fans have known for quite some time that Sigourney Weaver is coming back for the upcoming sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” but her return has been a giant question mark, given that her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the first movie. It turns out Weaver is playing not only a brand-new character in “The Way of Water,” but a teenage Na’vi who is the adoptive daughter of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). More than a decade after the release of the original film, the trailer for James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar sequel has arrived. Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit theaters on Dec. 16 as the first of four planned continuations of the fantasy world created in 2009.
The first official look at the film catches up with the Sully family in Pandora more than 10 years after Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) left off. In this fantastical Avatar future, there’s no clear plot, exactly — just blue aliens and vibes.
