Welcome to the University of Qt.
Without question or the slightest hint of a doubt, I feel wholly comfortable saying that there are more video essays, compilations, montages, and supercuts dedicated to the work of Quentin Tarantino than any other director out there. He has been an object of fascination bordering obsession from the first scene of Reservoir Dogs, and with each new film he releases, the fervor surrounding his mythos only increases. Largely this is due to Qt himself, who’s as good a hype-man as he is a filmmaker, but that’s just one more reason we love him: confidence. Qt knows he’s the shit and he’d be the first person to tell you that if the rest of us would ever shut up about it.
Bottom line, not since perhaps Kubrick has the totality of a director’s career been held in such high regard, nor...

Halo 5: Guardians
Developed by 343 Industries
Published by Microsoft Studios
Available on Xbox One
Halo 2 and Halo 5: Guardians have a lot in common. Both have split narrative campaigns. Halo 2‘s boasted the return of Master Chief and gave fresh perspective by allowing players to play as the Arbiter, previously a Covenant enemy. Halo 5 has players stepping back into the role of Master Chief and his Blue Team, while following the path of Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris who’ve been tasked to track him down. Both games feature strong player versus player arena multiplayer modes, which went on to shape the future of the series in the case of 2, and is certain to do so again in the case of 5. Both games also take the series to bigger, more explosive places than what came before, with amazing set pieces, mechanics, and a sense of scope and scale that exceeds their predecessors.

Exclusive: Immensely talented Yonderland writer and actor Laurence Rickard walks us through the making of Shakespeare comedy Bill.
Here's something rather exciting. Writer/actor Laurence Rickard of Horrible Histories, Yonderland and now Shakespeare comedy Bill has written a guest article for us, all about the making of the film. And here is it...
"They won't just say 'that sounds great, let's do it.'"
It was April 6th 2011 – my first day in what I shall call 'the movie business' (because I can't think of a less knobby term) – and those were the words of Tony Bracewell, producer of Bill... That afternoon we went in to see the lovely people at BBC Films, who said 'that sounds great, let's do it'. It remains the only time Tony's been wrong, so I like to remind him about it. A Lot.
Of course, his note of caution was utterly justified. As I've since learnt,...

Two new horror adaptations are coming to BBC Radio 4 this Halloween as part of Fright Night, The Stone Tape and The Ring…
While all the cool kids will be tripping over high heels and falling out of Borat mankinis on sticky dancefloors this Saturday the 31st of October, all the really cool kids will be elsewhere come Halloween: headphones on, mug of spooky cocoa in hand, listening to BBC Radio 4.
As part of Radio 4’s first annual Fright Night of Halloween programming, two exciting horror dramas are on their way: The Stone Tape, adapted from Nigel “Quatermass” Kneale’s 1972 television play, and The Ring, adapted from Koji Sozuki’s 1991 film franchise-spawning novel.
Kneale’s television play, first broadcast in 1972 as a BBC Christmas ghost story, tells the tale of a group of scientists investigating a haunted mansion whose walls are thought to have absorbed and recorded past events. It’s...

The final image of Arthur Penn’s “Night Moves” certainly gets the movie pundits in a lather. The scene consists of Gene Hackman as private eye Harry Moseby, shot to pieces but still trying to steer his motor boat to shore. Bleeding badly from his wounds, he’s unable to reach the gears; he ends up setting the boat in a circling motion. From above, we see Harry’s boat circling aimlessly in the Gulf Stream. This scene, which brings the film to a finish, has been described as a metaphor for many things, including America’s lost identity after the Watergate era, to Moseby’s own fruitless search for the truth, to Penn’s own floundering career. To me, it always looks like the boat is going down a drain (or a toilet). It’s the sort of ending that leaves a viewer wondering if you’ve missed something,...

Last week, Disney opened its doors and allowed itself to be overrun by journalists, drawn in by the scent of new films and also free lunch. The main event was Disney’s latest feature, Big Hero 6, but like anything with the word Disney in front of it, the day started with a short. That short was Feast, directed by Patrick Osborne, which will eventually run in front of Big Hero 6 when it opens in theaters this November. For convenience’s sake, consider Feast as a Disneyfied version of Noah Takes a Picture of Himself Everyday for 6 Years – that long-ago Youtube sensation that first pioneered the idea of watching a guy’s under-eye bags expand in depressing superspeed. Except Disney smartly swapped out the depressed twenty-something for a spunky Boston terrier with a love of table scraps. Feast is a continual sequence of Winston (the terrier in question) being fed whatever his owner doesn’t feel...

Not far south of The Wall rests Molestown, where Sam (John Bradley) decided Gilly (Hannah Murray) and her baby would be safer than at Castle Black. In the whoring village, prostitutes and their clients revel with booze and crude jokes and songs. One of the workers chides Gilly for her comparative purity and ignores her when she says she hears something suspicious outside. As it turns out, Gilly was hearing the beginnings of a Wildling attack on Molestown.

With Disney’s Cars spin-off/rip-off Planes hitting theaters this month, and a sequel called Planes: Fire & Rescue already in the works for next year, it seems that the talking vehicle craze in animation won’t be going away anytime soon.
Like it or not, adults, anthropomorphic vehicles have always been a part of animation, from the earlier Mickey Mouse cartoons to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to Pixar’s popular Cars franchise. And with Planes debuting last week, it seems obvious that studio heads are exploring other options than talking cars, and for good reason: there’s a whole array of vehicles that could be given animated makeovers and funny accents to help Disney make box office gold.

Cigars… vapes… cookies…
I really wouldn’t mind a sequel to the 1989 Shelley Long vehicle Troop Beverly Hills. The most cherished movie of my childhood is no cinematic masterpiece, so this would hardly be sacrilege. I figure if this is really gonna be the film most often running through my head like a skunk on a misdirected trail (oh, the shame!), the story may as well continue. So sack up, hobos, and pour some wine into that stew: It’s cookie time. Again.
We can’t go full-on original cast here — there’s a fresh crop of Disney/ABC Family...

When it comes to Ya movie adaptations, sometimes the soundtrack is just as hotly anticipated as the movie itself. The upcoming "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" is no exception.
Featuring tracks from popular producers/DJs Zedd and Bassnectar, pop queens Demi Lovato and Jessie J, bands AFI and Youngblood Hawke, plus many more, the soundtrack is a who's who of the popular music industry at the moment, and the songs that will accompany the movie based on the best-selling fantasy series by Cassandra Clare will carry just the right amount of angst and romance fit for a Ya film. One of the songs, Colbie Caillat's "When the Darkness Comes," just hit the internet and it certainly has an ethereal, haunting mood perfect for the darker story. Listen to the full track here.

Sony Pictures is ready for its shot at the Ya adaptation game with "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" rolling into theaters in a just over a month. Inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars, which is of course a favourite for many fans of the animation house, we can look forward to seeing a semi-spin-off this summer in Disney’s Planes.
The animated blockbuster was originally to be released straight to DVD/Blu-ray, but the studio must have really loved the finished product, because they’ve opted to give it a full theatrical release around the world this summer instead.
We saw a teaser trailer earlier in the year, and now Disney have released a full-length trailer, along with a handful of images.

Man, there are so many potentially racist caricatures in this trailer for Disney’s “Planes” that frankly, I’d feel offended if I was prone to being offended by cartoons. But I’m not, so I guess it doesn’t matter too much. After lots of concept artwork and teaser, here is your first look at the full trailer for “Planes”. It’s like “Cars”, but with planes. Thus, the title. But I guess you already knew that, right? The whole concept of talking vehicles living and doing “human” things still boggles my mind. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to my adult brain, but I guess that’s the point. It’s not supposed to. Or something. From above the world of “Cars” comes “Disney’s Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer.

Top Shot is back on History, and this time around we’re in for the somewhat obligatory All-Star season. As reality fans know, you can hardly go through a few seasons of any competition without bringing back the contestants that hooked audiences, whether they did so in a good or bad way. Top Shot isn’t likely to buck the trend, and the cast list seems to bear that out. Fan favorites like Kelly Bachand, all the way from season one, are here, as are the competitors who were chasing Most Hated Reality Star honors… I’ll let you decide who that might be.
Though a huge fan of the show, I wonder about the extent to which those in charge have paid attention to what seems to be the overall reaction to the latest season. Whether you’re keeping up with the general reactions on Twitter and similar social media outlets,...

Warner Bros. Pictures' Pacific Rim helmed by Guillermo del Toro has added a fantasy poster featuring Jaegers from multiple countries. In the front, we have Gypsy Danger (U.S.), the red one behind that is China's Crimson Typhoon. That one's followed by Cherno Alpha from Russia. From above we have Australia's Striker Eureka, also seen recently battling a Kaiju in this poster. Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Diego Klattenhoff, Max Martini, Robert Maillet, Brad William Henke, Heather Doersken and Larry Joe Campbell star in the film based on the script by Travis Beacham. In Pacific Rim, when legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which...

It isn’t hard to guess that a Disney release is going to have the accompanying video game, but it’s official now, you’ll be able to play along with Planes. This one might actually go a long way, as did the original Cars game years ago. It’s been a while since anything interesting has happened in the flying genre, and I’ve always felt this was a missed opportunity, especially given the potential of the Wii controller. Speaking of Nintendo, the game is going to be exclusive to Nintendo systems, available for WiiU, Wii, 3Ds, and DS.
It’s hitting August 6th, just before the film’s release, and my guess is that it’s going to be very cool, and one that fans of the film will have a lot of fun playing. With several game modes, the real character voices joining in, and a lot of characters to play,...

The news from Walt Disney has been a mixed bag this week. We saw them shutter LucasArts and today the next wave of reductions and layoffs are coming in the name of efficiency. If Chairman Bob Iger is right, and this repositions the company for the world of tomorrow, then it was a wise move, better done now to remain competitive. Creatively, this week we were given three other pieces of news. First, there was the announcement of the anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo, Finding Dory¸ which will arrive in 2015. Here’s the official announcement: Burbank, Calif. (April 2, 2013) – When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar-winning film Finding Nemo, she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov.
