Brisbane, Aug 12 (Ians) Courtney Vine scored the decisive penalty as hosts Australia made history in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Saturday by storming into their maiden semifinals, prevailing over France via penalties in a quarterfinal clash here.
After holding the European giants goalless in regulation time, the Matildas came out victorious 7-6 in the penalty shoot-out.
Vine converted the decisive penalty in a heart-stopping shootout and clinched a tense and hard-earned victory, thus making the Matildas the first Aussie team, male or female to reach the semifinals of a FIFA World Cup.
Though they were second-best for the bulk of the match, France began brightly and should have moved in front inside 13 minutes, but Maelle Lakrar failed from inside the six-yard box, scooping the ball over from the closest of ranges.

Brisbane (Australia), July 29 (Ians) Captain Wendie Renard scored an 83rd-minute winner to gift France a crucial 2-1 win over Brazil at the FIFA Women’s World Cup here on Saturday.
With the win, France temporarily topped Group F with four points, ahead of the later game between Jamaica and Panama in Perth.
In front of a raucous 49,378 crowd at Brisbane Stadium, France entered under pressure after being held to a goalless draw by Jamaica in their opener, while Brazil made an early statement in a 4-0 thrashing of Panama, reports Xinhua.
But France boasted six wins from their last seven matches against Brazil.
In a frenetic start, both teams came out aggressive as they went toe-to-toe.
But France settled and controlled possession and their patience was rewarded in the 17th minute when a high ball into the box was headed by Kadidiatou Diani to Eugenie Le Sommer, who angled a header into the net.

It will mark the first time in 22 years that the French national team has played in Australia, which means the Matildas will have played nine of the world’s current top-10 teams in the lead-up to the home World Cup.

Ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, soccer’s governing body FIFA is launching a free streaming service.
The organization says FIFA+ will provide access to thousands of live and archive matches, news and tournament information and a suite of original series from the likes of Fulwell 73, Andrew and Stuart Douglas, and England striker turned broadcaster Gary Lineker’s Goalhanger Films.
FIFA claims this makes it the first sports federation to offer such an extensive streaming service, with the organization’s President Gianni Infantino saying it represents “a cultural shift in the way different types of football fans want to connect with and explore the global game”.
The service launches today in five languages, with an additional six following in June. At launch, it’ll be available on web and cellular devices, with other connected devices following.
