- On p. 261 of his 2010 book, "River of Fire: The Clydebank Blitz" (Birlinn; ISBN 9781843410492), the Scottish Daily Mail journalist and author, John MacLeod, wrote that "the present century has seen the emergence of a gifted young film-maker, Iain McGuinness, who has to date produced two luminous documentaries about his Clydebank hometown, and is a talent to watch".
- He attended Kilbowie Primary School, Clydebank, Scotland, between 1989 and 1996. He then attended Clydebank High School between 1996 and 2002.
- After leaving school, in November 2002, he set up his own business (a new media agency). This was with the help of a loan from the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust, which is now known as Youth Business Scotland.
- During the whole month of October 2008, he went to South Africa (with seven other young people aged between 17 and 22, and two mentors) for West Dunbartonshire CVS' Mandela and Beyond project, to develop a computer laboratory and tutor pupils at St. James' School in Port Elizabeth. During the trip, he kept a blog for local newspaper, the Clydebank Post.
- He won a place at the Charge Music Video Workshop in London, in April 2009, where he and other film-makers received mentoring from experienced music video directors. He was also awarded a grant from the Media Trust.
- As a child, he was awarded both blue and silver Blue Peter (1958) badges; blue for his artwork, and silver for organising a Well Water Appeal bring-and-buy sale.
