It’s been over 20 years since The Bachelor Season 1 premiered on ABC. Alex Michel, a Harvard-educated management consultant from Charlottesville, Virginia, stepped into the spotlight as the show’s first lead. Since then, quite a few things have changed.

In 2023 ABC spreads new episodes of The Bachelor out over the course of two months. Season 27 consists of 10 episodes in total, as well as a Women Tell All and After the Final Rose special. However, back in 2002, the first season of The Bachelor was much shorter. Season 1 consisted of only six episodes in total, with the Women Tell All premiering on the same day as the finale.

Anyone who watches The Bachelor knows that many of the contestants are not there “for the right reasons,” which usually means that they appear on the show to get famous and not to find love. But the contestants aren’t the only ones who bend the truth a bit.
Many reality shows use editing or create storylines to make things more interesting. Some purposefully create drama or certain feuds so that viewers will tune in.
The Bachelor is not the first and will not be the last to push a certain narrative. But who would think that the hometown dates are not 100% real?

It's a classic Bachelor moment: a contestant, surprised by an elimination, is captured on camera crying as her one, lonely suitcase gets brought out and loaded up in the car to leave. Given just how many outfits these women seem to wear on screen, we find it hard to believe that they only are allowed to bring one suitcase each! So, what's the truth? Are these women really suitcase-packing wizards, or is this another bit of Bachelor filming trickery?
According to several past contestants, it's the latter, although the "one suitcase" role isn't entirely off base. Courtney Robertson, who won Ben Flajnik's season, wrote in her book I Didn't Come Here To Make Friends: Confessions of a Reality Show Villain that she was told to limit her luggage to just two suitcases - but not everyone played by the rules. "I brought the two suitcases I was told I was allowed to bring,...

It's no secret that The Bachelor franchises flash over-the-top dates. From helicopter rides to private music performances, each detail seems more extravagant than the next. You would think that the glamour carries to all aspects of the date, including the food. We wouldn't really know, however, because we hardly ever see the contestants eat.
Sometimes we see a couple snack on ice cream during the first portion of a one-on-one date, but, after that, nothing. More times than not, "Fantasy Suite" dates include a breakfast spread and one-on-one dates continue to a romantic dinner in the evening. The backdrop is beautiful, the conversation is flowing, and there is a spread of food on the table - but no one is eating. It turns out that there's a good reason for it.

All’s fair in love and reality TV, right?
While there’s no doubt that over the years many of our favorite contestants on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette would probably agree with that phrase, there are quite a few that seem to have taken it a little too literally. They plotted, schemed, lied and betrayed — and made for some pretty amazing television in the process.
And, if we were really lucky, they then ended up on one of the spin-off shows like Bachelor in Paradise and Bachelor Pad. In the spirit of free-flowing roses, champagne and drama, let’s...

Bachelor in Paradise means a lot of love, a lot of booze and a beautiful beach location – what could go wrong?
Well, you could get eliminated.
And that's what these competitors now know after their super short stints on the show. Here's who managed to have the quickest appearances in Paradise so far.

Host Chris Harrison warns us before every episode that this one will be the most dramatic one of all time – but this time, it actually might deserve that title.
A lot happened in the two-hour part 1 season finale of Bachelor in Paradise, including the fact that basically half the cast left the show, but it's safe to say the most insane part that still has us reeling was that Kirk broke up with Carly. We'll get to that ... but first, a quick rundown of all the other relationships that crashed and burned (and the few that blossomed) on Sunday night's episode.

That delicious summer mess called "Bachelor in Paradise" is ending its 2015 season this Sunday, September 6 and Monday, September 7, followed by one last "After Paradise" special with Rosemaster Chris Harrison. We're really going to miss that cute opening pose from Kirk. Not so much all the *drama* and tears.
But speaking of drama and tears (and Kirk), how are things going to end for the Season 2 couples? Paradise has been a revolving door of craziness, but there should only be one more person joining the mix -- beautiful single mom Cassandra Ferguson from Juan Pablo Galavis's season -- and a Lot of people are leaving. Reality Steve posted spoilers on the final two episodes of dates and departures, with scoop on the three couples that elected to stay together, including the one that got engaged.

On Monday's episode of Bachelor in Paradise, we finally got a break from the incessant Joe-Samantha saga that had basically taken over the entire season.
After finally sending Joe home on Sunday night's episode, Samantha kept a relatively low profile – but have no fear, the other contestants more than made up for it with their fair share of drama, including break-ups, Fantasy Suite dates, and last but not least, a wedding.

If "Married at First Sight"'s second season plays out the way the first season did, it will provide more evidence that initial attraction between couples is overrated at best, and destructive at worst. Yes, finding someone's appearance to be meh might be exactly what you need to for a successful relationship. If you missed its outstanding first season last summer, know that "Married at First Sight" is the kind of reality TV show that actually is "a social experiment." Its cast members are strangers who get actually, legally married minutes after seeing each other for the first time. They're matched by experts after an incredibly detailed casting process. When you think about it, this is really insane. It's crazier than going on "The Bachelor" or any other show. Of course the wedding and the show are not irreversible or inescapable, but entering into such a public and legal commitment is no reality TV joke.

Though the Jan. 5 episode of ‘The Bachelor’ was mainly a countdown to the new season, the show took out a good chunk of time to pay homage to Gia, who tragically committed suicide on Aug. 12.
On Jan. 5, the makers of The Bachelor faced their personal tragedy — former contestant Gia Allemand sadly taking her own like on Aug. 12 – head on, and the result was a truly touching tribute.
Gia Allemand Honored On ‘The Bachelor’
Bachelor host Chris Harrison led the tribute, saying that Gia had kept in touch with all of the cast and crew. A subsequent video clip that ran showed Gia herself talking sweetly about love, friendship, and life.

In an interview with host Chris Harrison, he teased that they had to come up with a different word to describe this year's "Bachelor Pad" finale - "disturbing," as opposed to "dramatic." So needless to say, we're chomping at the bit to find out what goes down.
The panel of evicted contestants are introduced -- what in the heck is Jamie wearing? She's like if H&M was putting out a line of Native American princess chic. And also, Erica Rose's hair looks 1000x better than it did on the show. Blondes rarely look good with that platinum, trashy color. That nice honey color is so much better.
After a pointless video recap, we learn that Kalon/Lindzi are still going strong, so that's cool. Of course Erica must stick her giant $0.02 in, telling Lindzi to be careful and that she sees Kalon around town with different girls all the time.

The final episode in the house was the biggest one yet. Next week’s episode will be the finale which takes place in front of a live studio audience and I’ll talk a little bit about that later.
This week was different as we held two competitions. The first competition was a huge project. We blacked out the windows in the back of the house so the contestants couldn’t see what was going on but due to all the noise they knew something big was happening back there. Our crews worked non-stop day and night to quickly build that contraption over the pool.

Ah the '80s. It was a time when grown adults wore skin-tight acid washed jeans, shredded at the knee. We sprayed at least half a can of Aqua Net on our permed bangs to reach maximum height for head banging. The gloves were both fingerless and lace while the t-shirts were dayglow. Mike Fleiss spent roughly 90 minutes of last night's episode paying homage to the greatest decade ever. Sadly, other than Blakeley, the remaining contestants weren't even alive during the '80s to truly appreciate the moment. But that didn't stop them from attempting to be totally awesome to the max. Too bad they all gagged me with a spoon instead. Welcome to week seven of "Bachelor Pad!"

It was really interesting to read the reactions to last week’s elimination. Many of you respected what Erica did, and many of you were in Michael’s camp. It's still Chris and Sarah versus the rest of the "Bachelor Pad" house, while Ed turns out to be the skanky d-bag we all thought we was and Rachel is "a widow," which .... of course that's what someone on this co-dependent, Stockholm Syndrome show would say.
Post Rose Ceremony
Rachel's having a total meltdown, like she can't date Michael when the show is over in like two weeks. Um, if you are so weak that you worry how you'll survive in this stupid game without him for two weeks, then you don't deserve a guy like Michael Stagliano. Get a rein on your horses, lady.
Nick partners up with Rachel, as Harrison tells them they are playing officially as partners from here on out, which is pretty much exactly what they've been doing so far.

Get ready for a little shakeup. From now on, Bachelor Pad contestants will have to compete as couples, which meant heartbroken Rachel had to get over Michael's elimination and focus on her new man, Nick. Especially when it came to tonight's toughest challenge yet—a spelling bee. But this wasn't any ordinary spelling bee. Like we said, everyone must compete as a couple now, which meant for this challenge, each duo had to spell their designated word by alternating letters. Yeah, not so easy. Blakeley and new partner Tony were the first couple out with the word "elimination." How fitting, right? It came down to Ed and Jaclyn against...

Bachelor Pad host Chris Harrison has joked that Ed Swiderski is "terrible with women". Harrison's comments come after last night's episode of Bachelor Pad, which saw Swiderski upset his partner Jaclyn Swartz by admitting in front of everyone that he did not go on the show to begin a relationship. "Ed isn't on the same level as any human being, especially when it comes to human emotion," Harrison told TV Guide. "His track record speaks for itself, and at least with Jaclyn he told her." Harrison continued: "Sadly, [it was] in front (more)...

Bachelor Pad is definitely the worst thing to happen on television in the last 24 hours (if not 24 months), and yet not only am I recapping it, I’ve taken a rooting interest in which of its bedraggled, hard-drinking cast members wins the $250,000 cash prize and/or “love.”
Last night’s episode found teammates Blakeley and Tony winning the respective women’s and men’s tea-cup race challenges, and extending immunity to Kalon and Jaclyn. In a surprise twist clearly designed to keep woman-hating ogre Chris in the competition, the rules were changed, with every contestant voting to eliminate one woman.

Once again this episode starts with the fallout from the last elimination. As you can see, the anger management classes aren’t exactly working for Chris. He’s an angry little elf, isn’t he? Michael had a great line when he said Chris was taking up “all the a-hole space” in the house. You know things are getting out of hand when even Michael Stagliano thinks you’re being a dill-weed.
This week’s challenge, “The Great Fall of China,” really did seem simple when I was explaining it, but as you saw, it was pretty difficult to execute.

Before we jump into the show tonight, faithful readers and "Bachelor Pad" fans, we must draw your attention to this interview we did with Chris last week in case you missed it. His lack of self-awareness is staggering. Not only does he think his stringing along of multiple women "part of the game" (it's not), but he thought Jamie would give him a hug before she let last week. A Hug, you guys. He's lucky he didn't get punched in the throat.
Blakeley sums it up nicely in the opening few frames when she calls him "the s*** on the bottom of my shoe." But then Stagliano hilariously one-ups her with, "Chris is taking up all the a**hole space in the house."
Kalon tells Chris the truth -- he's a loose cannon that nobody likes and he won't listen to anyone (because he has the emotional maturity of a...

Bachelor Pad host Chris Harrison has teased that there will be "tragic" turns in the relationships this season. Writing in his blog for Entertainment Weekly, Harrison hinted that the romance between Jaclyn Swartz and Ed Swiderski could increase in future episodes. "This relationship is obviously just blossoming, but as the weeks go on, you'll see that all the romances in Bachelor Pad take on a life of their own," he said. Harrison added that fans will begin to find out more about the relationships on Bachelor Pad in the next episode. (more)...

You can tell that this is going to be an intense episode of Bachelor Pad - just the opening "here's what's coming up" sequence is pretty lengthy. We've only just had the last rose ceremony, but David's already talking about the power couples in the house: Chris and Blakeley, Kalon and Lindzi, Rachel and Michael and Ed and Jaclyn. But will those couples be intact by the end of the episode? Ed and Jaclyn are certainly feeling very smug, since they got Reid out (there's a lot of talk about him being a "dummy" and lots of cat-that-got-the-cream grins.) On the other hand, Jamie and David are both feeling a little nervous since they know that people who had agreed with their plan had then gone and done something else. That's the name of the game, guys! Anyway, Jamie suspects Kalon and Lindzi (the scoundrels) but the pair agree they'll...

Self-proclaimed Massachusetts mean girl Jaclyn Swartz came to Bachelor Pad with dollar signs in her eyes and disgust for Blakely in her heart. But now Swartz, 27, admits the game show and her "default partnership" with Ed Swiderski changed her for the better. Not that she doesn't still want the prize money, as she tells People. Did you come for love, money or both? My main focus was winning the money. Never in a million years would I think that it's a game for love. Yet you hooked up with Ed. LoudlyEd's noises are pretty epic. I don't recall hearing those...

The Olympic flame might have gone out in London, but on Bachelor Pad, the wildfires are just starting to burn. With Reid gone, there was a huge shift of power in the house and the people left in the wake had to come together to try and get rid of the now-forming power couples. Our competition this week, the Game Show Mash-Up, was really a no-holds-barred, tell it like it is kind of competition, and let me tell you, it wasn’t long before the claws came out.

When we last left the fine folks of the "Bachelor Pad," David is the last fan standing, while Ed is kind of a raging alcoholic and Chris is hooking up with everything that moves.
Post Elimination
Ed and Jaclyn drunkenly slur things at each other and then Jaclyn mixes some metaphors about a scale of 1-10 and Cloud 9. On a scale of one to 10, those two don't have five brain cells between them. Meanwhile, Jamie's sweating things a bit because really the only ally she has in the house is David, who is probably not long for the "Bachelor Pad" world if he doesn't win the challenge.
Then Chris Harrison stops by and they all have to fill out a survey about each other. Glassy-eyed Jaclyn sways on her feet as she tries to remember how to write, while Kalon smirks like he's still some kind of villain instead of an empty suit.

Introducing Chris Harrison, census taker of doom. As the Bachelor Pad roomies either celebrated or squirmed following Reid and Donna's ouster, the ever chipper host returned to the house to distribute presumably highly personal surveys that he encouraged the 14 remaining contestants to answer as openly and honestly as possible. Well, that was bound to cause mass devastation, now wasn't it? The fruit of their box-checking labor manifested itself in "Bachelor Pad Game Show Mashup," a trivia challenge ultimately won by power couple Ed Swiderski, who got lucky with questions like 'Who was the fifth Bachelorette?' (er, Jillian Harris) and Jaclyn Swartz, aka "the fakest in the...

In next week's Bachelor Pad episode, expect the Chris/Blakeley/Jamie drama to get a bit more crowded when Sarah catches the eye of the Bachelor Pad's ladies' man.
"You'll see things completely blow up. I was so happy not to be part of that," Jaclyn Swartz said in a conference call with the media today. She also discussed the Ed/Reid debacle, and becoming friends with someone she did not expect.
Here are highlights from Jaclyn's interview:...

Bachelor Pad is refusing to let up on the drama, isn't it? Ed might have survived the rose ceremony last week by the skin of his teeth, but it's all anyone can talk about. Sarah's crying in the bedroom because she feels bad for hooking up with him and then voting for him (and by the way Ed snubs her and refuses to talk to her, it seems he's not too happy about it either). Reid's feeling pretty worried too, because if it gets out that he was the one behind the "get Ed out" campaign, he might be in a little trouble. "I'm screwed," he worries. That kind of sums it up! He realises he needs to figure out a new plan. Ed's head's also whirring - in fact, he feels so gutted about his close shave that he's thinking about leaving the show (it's so awful being betrayed)! Luckily,...

The latest "Bachelor Pad" picks up with the fallout from Ed's near-eviction. Sarah, the girl who thought she was pathetic for not hooking up, is now feeling so guilty about voting to evict her hook-up Ed. She's actually crying about it. And Ed is thinking about leaving because he can't handle the game. Things are harsh when you're sober, huh, Ed? But that lasts about five seconds, as Man-clyn convinces him to stay. So .... who cares?

"If at first you don't succeed try, try again." That's the mantra Bachelor Pad's Reid followed which ultimately cost him the game.
On the third episode of this summer's guilty pleasure, Reid attempted to get his Bachelorette Season 5 comrade Ed axed, but fell short thanks to Sarah cluing Ed into the plan. With help from Jaclyn, the duo turned the ploy around and got the Philadelphia realtor eliminated. And now that the back-stabbing has really begun, host Chris Harrison says it only gets more tense from here. Keep reading for more on the new alliances, why the challenge was harder than it looked and who Harrison says is sliding through the game.

It's only the second episode of ABC's "Bachelor Pad" (Mondays at 8 p.m. Et) and the fans are already dropping like flies. This week, two of them, twins Erica and Brittany, voluntarily walked off the show after an all-night argument.
Though the competition was stressing Brittany out, the idea of leaving was too stressful for Erica. “I don’t want to be here with you, honestly," Brittany told her.
And she wasn't alone. “I have been listening to their voices for the past seven hours," fellow housemate and "Bachelor" alum Jaclyn said in an interview. "I thought that my ears were, like, bleeding gallons of blood."
While many -- The Wall Street Journal included -- were happy to see the double departure, others, like Zap2It, didn't understand the twins' abrupt exit. “Were they homeschooled? … Locked in a basement with only each other for company and that's why one is...

"Bachelor Pad" kicks off Monday (July 30) with a montage of how gross and creepy the twins are. Nobody likes them and they make everybody uncomfortable. Meanwhile, Chris is still trying to balance a "partnership" with Blakeley with his wanting to get some nookie with Jamie.

Anyway. They all have to learn a rhythmic gymnastics routine and perform it for judges to get the rose. Oh, lordy. The two worst are given a vote against them heading into the Rose Ceremony. And the two genders are performing together as a group. They have two hours. Go!
Is this supposed to be amusing for us to watch? Because it's mostly just dumb,...

On a related note, who agrees that Jason Thompson actually looks like he’s been crying as much and hard as Patrick? Way to sell the storyline! Oh, and: Ewen...

Ladies (and gentlemen) it's that time again! Yep, Bachelor Pad is back for the third go 'round. This season, in a surprising twist, the veteran men and women who tried to find love on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette will be competing against/coupling up with/picking on super fans in their search for love and money.
Collaborating with me this week is my (very witty) sister, Staci, a fellow Bachelor and Bachelorette fan. Here's what happened this week on BP3:
We're back at the old Bachelor mansion, greeted by Chris Harrison, who says this season's cast includes the lovers, the villains, the fighters, the good guys, the crazy girls, and the ones you love to hate from seasons past. So, who's who?
Chris, from Emily's season, is still nursing a broken heart but thinks BP3 will fix that right up. Lindzi, the equestrian runner-up in Ben's season,...
