“American Idol” may be a platform for aspiring unknown singers to showcase their talent outside of their bedrooms, but some contestants may have an advantage over others: being born into famous families.
Season 21 has already shown several so-called “Nepo Babies” — contestants with ties to the entertainment business — competing for the crown, including Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (pictured).
“With all your different opportunities and connections and stuff, how did you even land on ‘American Idol?’” Judge Katy Perry asked before her audition.
It’s a fair question, but “nepo babies” competing on “American Idol” is nothing new. In the past, the offspring of parents with varying backgrounds from music, acting, sports, and politics have all found their way in front of the judges.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has canceled a performance during Republican National Convention festivities in Tampa, THR reports.
A number of entertainers are slated to add some fun to the Rnc proceedings, but the looming threat of Hurricane Isaac may put a literal dampener on the whole week. Lynyrd Skynyrd's show at Liberty Plaza, a party space near the event, which takes place at Tampa Bay Times Forum, has been scrapped. But the band may still perform at the convention itself, where its gig that was scheduled for Monday may or may not be added to the rest of the week's itinerary.
Other acts lined up to perform: 3 Doors Down, Kid Rock, Trace Adkins, Lee Greenwood, the Oak Ridge Boys (on national anthem duty), Rodney Atkins, Karla Davis ("The Voice") and Shannon Magrane ("Idol"). Willie Nelson, perhaps the biggest name in the bunch, is also taking part in a benefit for Got...

Steven Tyler, we’re going to miss you. We tried to drape our great-grandma in scarves and seat her next to a DVD of Gigli, but it just wasn’t the same. American Idol definitely won’t be the same now that the Aerosmith singer decided not to return as an A.I. judge next season. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez seems to be on the fence about her involvement as well. “I am thinking that maybe it’s time for me to go and do other things that I really love to do,” JLo explained on Today…today. “Like films, and right now I’m on tour and performing — all the things that I do.” Cut to Randy Jackson hurling a chair through his dressing room mirror. Hey, that sounds like something Steven Tyler would do! While no greenrooms got trashed during his tenure (wait, were there any? We probably just...

For the final salvo in what’s arguably been the deepest, most evenly matched field in American Idol history, Tuesday night’s Season 11 finale came up surprisingly light in the competitive fireworks department.
Maybe the Top 2 — Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips — were still heeding last week’s instructions from their fallen comrade Joshua Ledet: “No! More! Drama!” Or perhaps it was just the incongruousness of the matchup, which was akin to making a choice between a stunning courture evening gown and a perfectly battered old t-shirt. (“But what’s the occasion?” you might’ve asked.)

American Idol Finale Part 1: What a Girl Wants
I think American Idol finales fall in to two camps: ones where the finalists are matched so evenly, where the result isn't as obvious as it seems. And then there are ones like tonight. I know how I think the results should turn out, but the signs were all over the place tonight: Phillip Phillips is winning American Idol.
Round 1: Simon Fuller's choice
Jessica Sanchez "I Have Nothing" I don't even know what to say about this. Sure this is a song in Jessica's wheelhouse, and she did what she could with it. But given that a)Shannon Magrane had already sung it This Season, and that b) it's the Third Whitney song Jessica has performed, I began to get angry. What an uninspired and predictable song choice. B
Phillip Phillips "Stand By Me" This is a great song,...

We’ve reached that point in the American Idol season — after 37 episodes, hundreds of magnificently awful images in the backdrop oval, and what feels like 73 hours of nonsense critiques from Tweedle-Huh, Tweedle-Abs, and Tweedle-Yo — where I start hunting for conspriracy theories with the vigorousness of Skylar Laine tracking an eight-point buck in the woods. (Run, Bambi, run!) And this week’s Top 3 performance episode had ‘em in spades:
* There was Ryan Seacrest’s intro, touting Phillip Phillips and his hometown of Leesburg, Ga, which might’ve been a not-so-subtle reminder of the last growly-voiced, guitar-playing, untucked-shirt-wearing Idol winner Lee DeWyze,...

After a hit-and-miss foray into the '80s last week, on April 11 "American Idol" returned to what the contestants do best: contemporary songs that may actually bear some resemblance to the kind of music they'll (hypothetically) be releasing next year -- with a current artist (Akon) serving as a well-qualified mentor. And thankfully, now that DeAndre and Heejun have exited stage right, the real vocalists can finally get down to competing. The narrowing of the talent pool didn't preclude a couple of sub-par performances, of course, but it's nice that we've finally reached a point where the good generally outweighs the bad on performance night.
Here's the rundown of the Top 7's performances, with songs chosen from 2010 through to today.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

This week’s American Idol was built around two distinct themes: Paying tribute to the Billy Joel songbook and paying absolutely no mind to the advice of the show’s new/official style guru, Tommy Hilfiger.
As Steven Tyler so direly warned at the top of the show, “If you can’t sing Billy Joel, you can’t sing at all.” (This seems to be the total reverse of Randy’s oft-stated “If you can sing, you can sing anything” philosophy.)
And while the undeniably talented Top 10 fared pretty well with the Piano Man’s tunes — at least five contestants...

This week's "American Idol" saw the contestants tackling the music of Billy Joel, regardless of the fact that before tonight, the majority of them probably wouldn't have been able to name more than one of the artist's songs without hitting Wikipedia first.
In my mind, the show's stubborn insistence on clinging to theme nights based on "classics" like The Beatles and Elvis -- who, while groundbreaking and inspirational in terms of their impact on music as a whole, generally have no bearing on today's charts -- is what really hobbles "Idol" as a hit-making series. These artists aren't going to be singing songs that were released 20 years before they were born in their own careers, so why force them to run the gamut of styles and arrangements that are the antithesis of their identities as vocalists now? All it seems to do is highlight irrelevant weaknesses that have no impact...

It's a sobfest as American Idol kicks off tonight. The footage shows that the contestants who remain are incredibly sad about last week's loss of Shannon Magrane. But as the opening song says, "and so it goes."
Tonight the Top 10 will be performing numbers from the songbook of Billy Joel. Sean "Puffy" Combs Puff Daddy P. Diddy Diddy will be the guest mentor and Tommy Hilfiger will be styling the contestants. Sort of.
Deandre Brackensick is going first tonight. Tommy Hilfiger tells DeAndre to take his hair down and says that pulling it back is a waste of his hair. I say that only to say that I vehemently disagree, Tommy. Vehemently. DeAndre goes into his meeting with Jimmy and Diddy and I honestly have no idea what advice they just gave him. DeAndre sings "Only the Good Die Young." With plenty of head bopping and hair bouncing. I think...

Tonight’s American Idol kicked off with a memorial service for Shannon Magrane’s singing career. (Fret not, Idoloonie Nation, the contestant herself is alive and well; I know, since I interviewed her this past Monday!)
Interestingly enough, that maudlin intro seemed to have a positive effect on the Season 11 Top 10, with at least half of the evening’s contestants giving arguably their best performances to date while covering the songs of Billy Joel.
In other news, Erika dyed her hair Jett black (is it possible she watches Idology?). Phillip deliberately ignored every bit of advice he received from style...

I'm not entirely sure whether or not to be excited for Billy Joel week on American Idol. I like some of his music, but his best songs are the ones that heavily feature the piano, so I'm curious to see how this will translate to a singing competition. My song suggestions caused a bit of a stir in the comments, but mostly because I flippantly called Billy Joel a creep. To backtrack, the music is the important thing here and I'm not sure if musically, this is the right theme for a bunch of teenagers. It appears that the people who love Billy Joel don't think these kids can do him justice, and the people who don't care for his music don't want to hear ten covers of it. Another thing I'm curious about is P. Diddy mentoring on Billy Joel week, but stranger things have happened.

American Idol‘s Season 11 Top 10 is the perhaps the deepest, most evenly matched in the show’s history. Yet while that’s great news for the Idoloonie Nation, it’s got to be more than a little intimidating for the remaining vocalists. Indeed, with such intense competition, pretty much anybody could be one subpar performance away from winding up on the Silver Stools of Doom (Tm), or even walking the plank to wherever Shannon Magrane and Jeremy Rosado disappeared.

She might have gotten a somewhat serious edit during her American Idol run, but in a lot of ways, Shannon Magrane is a typically goofy 16-year-old girl.
Season 11′s eleventh-place finisher dropped by Idology HQ to discuss her love of classic soul music, her choice of an obscure Kathy Troccoli ballad for the semifinal rounds, and the horror she felt when she forgot the lyrics to Blu Cantrell’s “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” during her group performance during Hollywood Week. Plus, Shannon talks about her Flo Rida connection, her decision to scale Mt. Mariah, and Jennifer Lopez’s use of “Sweet Baby.

Shannon Magrane became the second person eliminated from "American Idol" in one week, missing the Top 10 by one week. The 16-year old came in 11th place in the singing competition, but there was one moment during the auditions rounds for which she'll be most remembered. When Anderson Cooper brought it up on "Anderson" (Weekdays, Syndicated), she laughed, "I knew you were going to bring this up!"
"I have to," Cooper said. He then played the infamous clip of Steven Tyler interacting with the then 15-year old Magrane's father, former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joe Magrane.
When asked how things were in Beantown by Papa Magrane, Tyler said, "Oh great. Beautiful. Hot, humid and happening. Yeah. Just like your daughter."
It was a clip played over and over again, creating a false sense of tension between Tyler and the elder Magrane. "Steven Tyler did say that," Shannon admitted. "e did say that about me.

In a first of the season, this week’s results show of American Idol was actually very captivating. From the top 11′s Ford commercial and special musical guests right down to the elimination… everything about the results show was entertaining and more than reassuring. A few weeks into the live shows have gone by and America has made it clear which contestants they are behind. While we can never predict when the jaw dropping moment will actually happen, that moment when we’re all blind sighted and the Pia Toscano of the season will get the boot… so far, all is well. No complaints here. Our top ten has been chosen. Looking back on all of the hopefuls who have been eliminated so far this season, the judges and America really did a wonderful job choosing the finalists. Who else is looking for to the summer tour?

Capping off an emotional week on American Idol, voters eliminated 16-year-old Florida finalist Shannon Magrane on Thursday night’s results show. Magrane’s send-off came following the disqualification of co-finalist Jermaine Jones from the competition due to outstanding arrest warrants and apparent failure to come clean with show producers about his criminal record. In a conference call with reporters Friday, Magrane said she and her fellow Idol contestants were just as surprised as America while learning about Jones' departure in their dressing rooms. American Idol had an all-girl bottom three Thursday night, augering for aother year that a male will take the win. The last woman to take the American Idol win was Jordin Sparks in 2007. New Jersey's most wanted Jermaine Jones was disqualified on Tuesday as Idol winnowed the hopefuls to ten Thursday night. On Thursday's episode, Shannon Magrane, Elise Testone, and Erika Van Pelt were in the unwanted pile of singers. Interestingly, Elise Testone was one of Wednesday's favorites and one of Jimmy Iovine's picks. Demi Lovato and Daughtry performed and designer Tommy Hilfiger was signed on to become the contestants' image consultant beginning next week. Elise was voted to safety, but Shannon Magrane and Erika Van Pelt...

“American Idol” said goodbye to contestant Shannon Magrane Last night and Fox All Access was backstage to speak with the judges afterward.
Steven Tyler thinks things are only going to get tougher for the remaining 10 contestants, because he says they’ve been improving and raising the bar every week since they made it to the live performance round. And since the 10 remaining singers will be going on the “American Idols Live” tour this summer, we reminisced with Tyler about his first Aerosmith tour. And even though that tour took place four decades ago, Tyler told us the band’s been working on new music, and they’re on an incredible creative roll right now

HollywoodNews.com: Another ‘American Idol’ contestant has been voted off the show as the judges have gotten things down to the top ten contestants.
Last night, Shannon Magrane was eliminated from the show after her last chance song, “One Sweet Day,” didn’t do enough to win the judges over to convince them to save her, states RadarOnline.com. “Unfortunately, we’re not gonna use it tonight Shannon,” Randy Jackson commented about the save.
Elise Testone and Erika Van Pelt were the other two contestants in the bottom three last night.

It was a night of high emotions and even higher stakes last night at “American Idol.” Because of the disqualification of Jermaine Jones, the field was being cut from 11 to the Top 10, which means one contestant would go home, while the rest will all go on tour when “Idol’s” finished. Based on America’s votes, Shannon Magrane was the one who didn’t make the cut, and the judges chose not to use their save tonight.
Fox All Access was backstage after the show and spoke to Jennifer Lopez, who talked about the Top 10 finalists, having to say goodbye to Magrane, and what it will take to win the “Idol” crown this year.
Although “American Idol” is based in Hollywood, the Top 10 contestants will be in a “New York State of Mind” next week, as they tackle the Grammy-winning catalog of the “Piano Man,” Billy Joel. Who will be able to handle the “Pressure,...

Internet controversy magnet Lana Del Rey will face the her (loud, capslock-prone) critics once again when she performs on an upcoming episode of "American Idol."
Zap2it was in the house for her performance of "Video Games," which was taped after the Top 11 results show that sent 16-year-old Shannon Magrane packing back to Florida and will air on an episode later in March, and let us be the first to tell you that this was leagues better than her disastrous turn on "Saturday Night Live" in January.
Del Rey stuck to her retro style for the "Idol" audience, rocking a Jessica Rabbit-style side-swoop and a white A-line dress with sneakers (how very Lily Allen). The crowd, unfamiliar with her music, lacked much enthusiasm for the low-energy song, which wasn't helped at all by the simple staging. Del Rey, bathed in a red spotlight and gripping her mic, seemed swallowed...

For a 16-year-old, Shannon Magrane was ultra-poised when she spoke with reporters after getting kicked off "American Idol." Magrane made it to the Top 11 -- leaving just before the cutoff for the summer tour, an extra bummer. Though she appeared to be fighting back tears at first -- while insisting "It's okay, it's good, it's alright, I'm okay" -- the sunny teenager kept smiling as she talked about her "Idol" journey.
"It's definitely really upsetting knowing that you've come so far and it has to end here," she admits to Zap2it after the Top 12-turned-Top 11 results show. "But just thinking about it, out of 121,000 people who auditioned for American Idol, I'm in the 11, so I'm definitely really proud of myself."
Magrane tried her best to win back a spot with the judges' save, but ultimately couldn't get them to use it this early in the competition.

Demi Lovato cheered the audience as she took on the stage of "American Idol" on Thursday night, March 15. Delivering an energetic performance to the result show of the Fox singing competition, the former "Sonny with a Chance" star belted out her hit single "Give Your Heart a Break".
Channeling her inner rocker as she kicked off her stage act, the "Skyscraper" hitmaker looked attractive in a leather jacket, tight pants and sky-high heels. At one point, she is seen interacting with her guitarist while dancing a little. By the end of the performance, the 19-year-old starlet received a standing ovation from the audience.
Demi last appeared on "American Idol" back in 2010 along with her famous ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas. After wrapping her returning performance on Thursday, she took to her Twitter and excitedly wrote, "Wow!!! Thank you guys!!! That was so much fun... Los Angeles (AP) — It wasn't such a sweet day for Shannon Magrane (top row, second from left) on "American Idol."The 16-year-old vocalist from Tampa, Fla., known for her soaring voice and towering over "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, was eliminated from the Fox singing competition Thursday. Magrane was dismissed after reprising her rendition of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day." She failed to persuade the show's judges to save her from being booted."It feels so good standing on this stage," she said after her elimination.Magrane was revealed to be among the bottom three vote-getters with 28-year-old teacher Elise Testone, of Charleston, S.C., and 26-year-old disc jockey Erika Van Pelt, of South Kingstown, R.I. The judges, who lauded Testone's soulful performance of Tina Turner's 1983 edition of "Let's Stay Together," were noticeably dissatisfied with the viewers' picks."I just feel that the great performances should be rewarded,...

Note: The following contains spoilers if you did not see the March 15, 2012 elimination episode of "American Idol."
After the semi-shocking Jermaine Jones disqualification last night, I had some doubts that "American Idol" would eliminate another contestant this week, but apparently sentimentality wasn't going to get in the way of a good show.
Though it was a sub-par week that saw plenty of contestants finding loopholes for the "song from the year of your birth" theme by using covers of older tunes, there were a few standout performances -- most notably Joshua Ledet's rousing rendition of "When a Man Loves a Woman." Tonight's results were, again, all filler and no thriller, complete with a cameo from Tommy Hilfiger -- who is apparently tasked with being the show's "image advisor," poor thing -- and performances by Demi Lovato and Chris Daughtry.
But all you really want to know is who was shown the door,...

Last night, the Top 11 American Idol finalists performed songs from the years they were born. Tonight, one of them will go home and we'll find out who'll be going on tour this summer. Maybe.
I'm speculating that producers won't cut anyone this week because of Jermaine Jones' elimination. Let's see if I'm right...
Ryan calls Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, and Joshua Ledet to the center of the stage first. Jimmy said he's rooting for Phillip, Skylar's safe but her song choice wasn't great, Elise killed it and captivated him, and this week was Joshua's week. I think he's bitter that Skylar didn't take his advice about the song and people have kind of overhyped Joshua just a smidge, but other than that, Jimmy's spot-on in his analysis of the performances.
Joshua, Phillip, and Skylar are headed on tour. Elise is in the bottom three. It really hurt...

Time to send someone home from "American Idol" - and this time, the eliminee misses out on the tour.
The Bottom 3 comes down to Shannon Magrane, Erika Van Pelt and Elise Testone - because the voting demographics of this show have gotten completely ridiculous. In a bit of a shocker, Erika is the one who is safe and Shannon is the one possibly going home. (We love Erika, we're just a little surprised.)
We thought Shannon was more popular of a contestant than that. She sings "One Sweet Day" for her sing-for-your-life song, which is maybe not her best choice from her songbook so far. We also doubt the judges use the save this early - look what happened last year when they didn't have the save for Pia.
So Shannon is heading home. She didn't exactly blow it out the box this week, but she was better than DeAndre or Heejun.

Shannon Magrane has become the latest contestant to be eliminated from the eleventh season of American Idol. The Top 11 hopefuls learned the results of a public vote during Thursday night's live broadcast after performing songs from the year of their birth on Wednesday. Magrane's cover of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 'One Sweet Day' was found to have the least number of votes after falling into the bottom three with Elise Testone and Erika van Pelt, and she was sent home by the judges. While judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler had the opportunity to rescue Magrane from elimination, they chose not to use their one save of the season but did not offer an explanation behind the decision. > 'American Idol' Jessica Sanchez voted best of Top 11 Reacting to her exit, Magrane thanked (more)...

Even though we're predicting a female will win this season of American Idol, all three people in the bottom three from the top 12 were girls! What gives? Fox The “American Idol” crew.
If getting into the top 13 wasn’t pressure enough, tonight “American Idol” had a painful and very emotional elimination round because only the top 10 go on tour this summer. With last night’s eviction of Jermaine Jones, last night, just 11 performed songs from the year in which they were born.
With things getting serious, Tommy Hilfiger was introduced into the fold. The fashion designer will act as Idol’s image consultant, helping the Idolettes grow into full-fledged fashionable Idols.

A lof of us thought the answer would be “no one,” considering Top 12 contestant Jermaine Jones was disqualified last night. But one of the Top 11 remaining kiddies did head home on tonight’s American Idol results show, which featured performances by Daughtry and Demi Lovato and a Ford music video that could have easily doubled as an ad for Hi-c’s Ecto-Cooler. The eliminated singer is….
Shannon Magrane.
Erika Van Pelt and Elise Testone joined Shannon in the bottom three. (Erika had the second-least amount of viewer votes.)
Ryan also confirmed the judges will get to use a “save” this season.

The drama that showed its face this week on American Idol unfortunately did not make this week’s performances anymore exciting to watch. There were a few standouts this week while the majority of the contestants failed to deliver more than their usual goods as they took on songs from the years they were born. More singers were thrown out of their comfort zones and the end result wasn’t impressive. With one contestant disqualified and one being eliminated tonight, there’s plenty of opportunity for anyone to get the cut.
