There are many comic book villains in the world of DC and Marvel that have truly stood the test of time and made their way onto the silver screen. Among them, the likes of Marvel’s Thanos and DC’s Darkseid truly stand out.
Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War
With that being said, it appears Grant Morrison has admitted that only one Marvel villain is on the same level as Darkseid and shockingly enough, it is not Thanos at all.
Grant Morrison Reveals Which Marvel Villain Is On Darkseid’s Level Darkseid in Justice League
As noted above, Grant Morrison has a high opinion of Darkseid but also has one particular Marvel villain whom he believes is exactly on the same level as Darkseid.

A red band teaser trailer for writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here) was unveiled back in September – you can watch it at This Link – but we’re still waiting to hear of a release date for that one. In the meantime, Ahoy Comics has announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that they are bringing the Toxic Avenger character back to the world of comic books for a five-issue mini-series they’re planning to get out into the world this fall! The first issue is expected to reach store shelves on October 9th.

With a remake on the way and a new 4K restoration of the original classic now streaming, it’s a good time to be a fan of Troma’s The Toxic Avenger. And on that particular note…
Bloody Disgusting has learned that Matt Bors — the founder of The Nib and a political cartoonist who has twice been named a Pulitzer Prize finalist —and acclaimed artist Fred Harper (Snelson) are collaborating on an all-new 5-issue comic book series, The Toxic Avenger, starring the satirical superhero of the Troma Films cult classic films.

The Toxic Avenger is returning to the world of comics.
Matt Bors, the Pulitzer Prize finalist who founded the daily online political comics publication The Nib, and artist and caricaturist Fred Harper, are collaborating on the what will be a five-issue comic book series.
The publisher behind the revival is Ahoy Comics, a Syracuse-based publisher dedicated to satirizing horror, space opera, social satire, sword & sorcery, and superhero stories. It is known for putting out Second Coming, a story of Jesus Christ and a Superman-like hero forced to become roommates. The company is eying a fall debut for the mini-series.
The comic takes its cues from the infamous 1984 low-budget cult classic movie made by Lloyd Kaufman and grade Z film production company Troma Entertainment. Toxic launched a B-movie franchise with sequels, a stage musical, cartoon. There was even a short-lived Marvel series that was published in the early 1990s. The title...

Beyond the toys, eggnog and family time, a nostalgic part the Yuletide season for me are books about comics. When I was growing up, there were just a few : Batman from the 30s to the 70s, Les Daniels’ Comix, Stan Lee’s Origins of Marvel Comics. But boy, did they make an impression on me. Today there’s a plethora of spectacular books available. Here’s a few of the best ones for your gift list consideration:
Kirby & Lee: Stuf’ Said! : The Complex Genesis of the Marvel Universe
by John Morrow and Jon B. Cooke, Twomorrows
I really enjoyed A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story Of Stan Lee by Danny Fingeroth. Somehow, Fingeroth seemed to thread the needle to deliver a fascinating book and thoroughly explores the myth versus the man.
But there’s two sides to every story, and that’s the approach that John Morrow took in this brilliant book,...

Billionaires deserve to be satirized more than anyone else in the universe, and that's exactly what Billionaire Island will do.
In a world where rich people think having money means you’re a genius, you get things like doomed, lawless, vanity campaigns for president, a strip-mined media landscape, and vampires. Fortunately, you also get the sharpest comedic team in recent comic book memory teed up to absolutely brutalize these dudes in a new series coming from Ahoy Comics.
Billionaire Island is a new series from Mark Russell and Steve Pugh, the pair who created the most unbelievably funny comic in years in The Flintstones. “Billionaire Island tells the story of Freedom Unlimited (Fu Island), a private island created and populated by billionaires hoping to wait out the end of the world,” said Russell. “But because they are in international waters and not subject to any law, their...

Ahoy Comics will step in to publish Second Coming, the satirical series that depicts Jesus Christ returning in modern times as a superhero-in-training. The spoof series from writer Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace was dropped from the March release schedule of Warner-owned DC Comics after its announced premise sparked online protest, pundit fury, and a major CitizenGo petition effort.
The series had been set-up at DC’s Vertigo imprint as a creator-owned project so the property reverted to Russell and Pace when they and DC amicably agreed that the series might be suited to a less-corporate outlet. Ahoy will launch the creator-owned series on July 10 with the first of a six-issue story arc. Award-winning artist Amanda Conner will handle the covers.
Official synopsis: “God commands Earth’s mightiest superhero, Sunstar, to accept Jesus Christ as his roommate and teach him how to use His power in a more powerful way.

Ahoy Comics is on a tear. The second issue of their debut series, The Wrong Earth, sold out and went back for a second printing. Comic shops increased their orders for issue #3. The quantities ordered were more than those for the first issue, which ‘never happens’ with new series in today’s comics market.
After reading The Wrong Earth #3, It’s easy to see why.
The main story picks up the pace in this adventure. This issue brings secondary characters to the forefront and, surprisingly, shuffles other characters offstage. The premise of this story is both traditional and cutting edge at the same time: the adventures of the gritty Dragonfly and the campy Dragonflyman as they switch places. Each character must navigate the absurdity of their doppelganger’s setting. Conventions are skewered on both sides of the narrative.
The Wrong Earth is a judgement-free zone. Readers aren’t scolded or lectured.

A few years back, the idea was that every new comic publisher would establish a cohesive interconnected universe. Every one of their comic series would be just one part of a larger grand tapestry.
Times have changed.
Since it burst onto the scene, Ahoy Comics has boldly said they want to make every comic different and surprising. They certainly deliver on that promise with Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Terror #1, available today in stores right on time for Halloween.
This comic is witty, creepy, gross …and so much fun. It’s packed full of content that, like a rotting corpse, it seems a little bloated. But in a good way.
The first story- and adaptation of Poe’s “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” – is grim stuff. Tom Peyer opens the story with Poe serving as our horror host. But there’s so much fear and self-loathing.

Kiana Madeira tells us all about Spin, the newest metahuman supervillain coming to The Flash Season 5.
The Flash will introduce a new villain this week. Kiana Madeira guest stars as Spencer Young, who goes by the villainous name of “Spin” when giving the Flash family headaches. And while Spin is indeed a character from the comics, there are some pretty serious differences.
For starters, this is a gender-swapped character. The comic book version of Spin only appeared in one story, which ran in The Flash #238-241 back in 2008. Created by Tom Peyer and Freddie E. Williams II, Spin was a media mogul named Auerbach, who could manipulate people’s fears and emotions and conjure powerful hallucinations based on them, in part via the news he broadcast on his network.
But in fact, that version of Spin was actually two people. Auerbach was exploiting Edwar Martinez, who could...

I think every reviewer has a high-spirited streak inside, where they want something to fail just because there’s a great headline for it. I remember when the Green Lantern movie was coming out, and there was a negative buzz preceding it, we came up with a list of reviewer headlines like “Oa No! Lights out for Green Lantern!” Looking back, it was pretty mean-spirited.
But thankfully, Ahoy Comics’ High Heaven is so good there’s no need for a cheesy headline. If you really want one or need one, just cut and “Omg! High Heaven’s Divine!” or “Tgihh: Thank God its High Heaven” and put it at the top of this review. This comic, the second venture from Ahoy Comics, is subversively, wicked fun. High Heaven is fresh, witty and couldn’t be more different from the first Ahoy title, The Wrong Earth.

It’s exciting to be at the start of something. It’s especially exciting to be at the start of a new line of comics. Somehow comics, more than other forms of entertainment, have that feel of immediacy combined with a substantial tapestry of creative team-work. There’s always lots of dedicated people involved, and when they work together and make something new and exciting happen, it’s pretty special.
Ahoy Comic’s first new series, The Wrong Earth, is pretty special. And you can be at the start of it when issue #1 drops in stores tomorrow.
The new series offers readers a double-fish out-of-water story, as a classic Silver Age crime fighter changes places with a gritty “modern” hero. For superhero fans, there’s a lot to compare and contrast. And it’s done without any judgement on what type of storytelling is better. Writer Tom Peyer serves up...

It’s indestructible! It’s indescribable! Nothing can stop it!
Every one of you watching this screen should look out! Because soon, very soon, the most horrifying monster menace ever conceived…
No, this isn’t advertising copy for a comic convention coming to your town. These lines are from the trailer for that old monster movie, The Blob. But it could be used to describe any upcoming comic con.
Comic conventions are not only thriving but, like the Blob, they are now oozing out from the walls of their convention centers and invading local towns. Geek culture cannot be held within its original confines.
Who would have ever thought, way back when Geek Culture was nestled in little comic shops in the scorned section of town, that we’d get to this point? Unlike the foreboding tone of that Blob movie trailer, this expanding, oozing primordial mass inspires a sense of awe and wonderment.

In the past I’ve mentioned some of what AfterShock Comics has been up to in my column here, but I haven’t talked about them as much as I should. I really haven’t been talking about the good work they’ve been doing. Having recently read World Reader #1, I decided I need to change that.
AfterShock Comics gets it.
I’ll explain. I was having lunch with Noah Sharma who writes over at Weekly Comic Book Review and AfterShock dominated the conversation. We talked about the different titles we’ve been enjoying like InSEXts, Animosity, Captain Kid, and World Reader. Well, the conversation actually started when I brought up how much I loved World Reader so let me backpedal a bit and talk about World Reader.
World Reader #1 hit the shelves on April 19th. It’s written by Jeff Loveness, drawn by Juan Doe and lettered by Rachel Deering.

I like crowds. I like big noisy events. State fairs? Love ‘em. Black Friday shopping days? I’m there. Live music with tiny crowded dance floors? Sounds good to me. San Diego Comic Con? Yeah, baby. Ditto The New York Comic Con.
But on the other hand, when I’m thinking about Geek Culture and comic conventions, I find that I also enjoy small comic conventions. There’s a certain charm, an aura of creativity and a sense of community that embraces you in a unique way that you won’t find at NYC’s Javits Center.
I had to cancel out of this past weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California. That was a drag as I was looking forward to being a panelist on Rik Offenberger’s Marketing/PR panel. But I haven’t been on a convention hiatus; lately, I have been busy finding and attending them. For consecutive weekends,...

But I haven’t been on a convention hiatus; lately, I have been busy finding and attending them. For consecutive weekends,...

Way back when, as I was growing up in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York State, I enjoyed The Syracuse New Times. This funky weekly newspaper ran a cartoon by Tom Peyer that often skewered the politicians of the day with its clever, biting wit. It was creative, irreverent, smart and subversively fun.
And then, one day, Peyer worked in an “Earth One/Earth Two” reference. That was kind of like a geek dog whistle – perceptible only to comic fans. I knew I’d be a fan forever.
Tom Peyer went on to a robust career writing and editing comics, with impressive runs on the DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes and L.E.G.I.O.N. His fantastic Hourman series brought characters like Snapper Carr and Bethany Lee to life in such a credible way that, like long lost friends, I still miss them.
Like me, Tom...

Over the past year I have been working on raising awareness of Rachel Pollack’s run on Doom Patrol. She’s not only one of two trans women to ever write at DC Comics, she’s also the only woman to write Doom Patrol.
When I was given a slot here at ComicMix to be a weekly columnist, I used my second column to talk about Coagula. Once DC Comics announced its plans to launch the Young Animal imprint helmed by Gerard Way and how Doom Patrol would be the flagship title, I wrote about my excitement and made sure to discuss Rachel Pollack’s contributions again. Months later I took to Geeks Out to praise the importance of Rachel’s run to queer comics history. Most recently, I wrote up a piece last week on how Rachel Pollack has been forgotten by the comics industry at [insertgeekhere].

As a young comic fan growing up in New York State’s Finger Lakes Region, the tall tales and whispered rumors about the fabled NYC comic conventions were fascinating. They were a siren call. But the big city was so far away that I didn’t imagine, at that time, I’d ever make the trip to the Big Apple for a comic convention. Of course, my eight-year-old self would have been awestruck when years later, as a marketing professional, I’d work in NYC and would even help Reed Elsevier build the New York Comic Con.
Biking to Fay’s Supermarket one day, I noticed a flyer on the community bulletin board for something called the “Ithaca Comic Con.” Unlike New York City, this was only about 45 minutes away from my hometown. I urged my parents to make the trip. Maybe it was more nagging than urging, but it...

This is going to be a slap-dash column, full of random thoughts (and, I hope, insights) because I’m having a slap-dash episode. The plumber is supposed to be here fixing my kitchen sink at some time in a four-hour period. I don’t know when he will arrive, but I’m pretty sure it will be when I’m in the middle of something really complicated.
The super in my building is supposed to come by to hang a picture for me that is too heavy for me to hang by myself. Again, that time thing makes it difficult to plan properly, or to think and act in an orderly manner.
My son and his girlfriend are coming to visit (hence the increased urgency for a working kitchen sink) and I have to make up the guest room, make sure there are snacks in the fridge, and explain to...
