At last week’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation held at The Getty Center, entertainment industry members heard from Hollywood and government leaders with varying cultural perspectives.
Jill Biden and Halle Berry at A Day of Unreasonable Conversation
Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.

In the world of celebrity giving, the road to scandal is often paved with the best intentions. Consider the case of Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation, which built homes for Hurricane Katrina survivors, only to face a class-action lawsuit over major structural defects. Or Sean Penn’s Core, a disaster-relief nonprofit that has been lauded for its work around the world and has a positive rating on Charity Navigator, but which faced accusations of labor violations (one case was dismissed by a judge earlier this year while a class-action suit was settled this week) and allegations of financial mismanagement (which the organization denies). There is little reason to doubt the genuine goodwill of such stars, but just as fame can draw attention to a worthy cause, it can amplify the reputational hit when things go wrong and undermine the aims of their nonprofits.

On Sept. 15, Propper Daley’s second A Day of Unreasonable Conversation gathering will return to Los Angeles, after being canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The invite-only event — produced in collaboration with social impact and culture change agency Invisible Hand — will take place at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, and will feature a day full of programming designed to unite television creators (writers, producers, executives) with cultural changemakers to participate in conversations. Conversations will center on intellectual humility, mental health, social and economic division, reproductive rights, climate change, responsible tech, and more. These discussions, coupled with a networking reception to follow, are intended to positively influence future television storylines and help maintain authenticity in narratives seen on screen.

Updated with details of event: At a Hollywood fundraiser Tuesday night , Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg warned of the crowd to not get too caught up in what President Donald Trump says, by “not allowing him to dominate our conversation about the future.”
Buttigieg asked supporters gathered at the Avalon Nightclub to “help us make sure that we don’t go on his show and play his game, that we pick up the remote and change the channel.”
Introduced by Mandy Moore, Buttigieg spoke for about 40 minutes, answering written questions from attendees that were selected from a fishbowl.
Asked why voters should select him, as opposed to others in the mammoth Democratic field, Buttigieg quipped that he offered the “only chance to vote for a Maltese american, Episcopalian, gay millennial mayor.” But he also said that he was a candidate from middle America who offered a voice that could cut...
