Every actor has a few films that might not have performed as well as they wanted, including blockbuster star Denzel Washington. But one box-office disappointment was different from the others, as it may have been a direct result of the O.J. Simpson verdict.
How the O.J. Simpson trial might’ve affected ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ Denzel Washington | Miikka Skaffari/FilmMagic
Devil in a Blue Dress saw Oscar-winner Washington play Easy Rawlins, a private detective investigating a missing woman. The 1995 movie was based on a series of books that Washington and the film’s director Carl Franklin were interested in at the time. The fact that the film was about a black investigator in the 1940s added another layer to Franklin’s noir film for him to play with.
“It gives you another obstacle,” Franklin said in an interview with Slate. “Of course, obstacles are the key to drama.

Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

Clive Owen hopes to divide and conquer with his dual Emmy submissions this year.
With two competing limited series in the Emmys race, the star will be submitting his two acclaimed performances in AMC’s “Monsieur Spade” and Hulu’s “A Murder at the End of the World” in separate acting categories, Variety has learned exclusively.
For his work as detective Sam Spade in AMC’s neo-noir miniseries “Monsieur Spade,” he’ll remain as expected in the highly competitive lead actor in a limited series or TV movie race, where he’ll face potential contenders such as Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) and Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). However, regarding his turn in Hulu’s psychological thriller “A Murder at the End of the World,” he’ll seek Emmy consideration as a supporting actor, eyeing competition in actors like Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”) and Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and...

The new Apple TV+ series “Sugar” isn’t shy about announcing its influences: It’s steeped in the traditions of film noir.
Creator Mark Protosevich leaned into the tropes of detective stories by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett when creating private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell), who himself is obsessed with classic Hollywood film noirs. Director Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and editor Fernando Stutz went so far as to edit in clips from those classic films, drawing parallels between Sugar’s investigation into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler) to Humphrey Bogart’s spin as Phillip Marlowe in “The Big Sleep.”
“I wanted a character who carried themselves in a classic style, that this is a person who doesn’t necessarily seem from this time,” Protosevich told IndieWire. He wondered how out of place the noble heroes of classic ’30s and ’40s Hollywood movies would feel in modern...

Private Investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell) wears a black suit for all occasions and never drives anything but his classic Corvette. He’s unflappably calm, prefers to listen rather than talk, and absolutely doesn’t know how to let a case go once he’s started working on it—especially if it involves a missing woman. Watching Sugar, it’s as if one of Humphrey Bogart or Glenn Ford’s hardboiled gumshoes stepped straight out of their smoky, monochrome realm and into our full-color world of smartphones and social media.
Though Sugar is set in modern-day L.A., the series finds him tasked with a case suited to his anachronistic sensibilities. In fact, it’s one cribbed straight from The Big Sleep: A rich, reclusive movie producer, Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), hires Sugar to track down his wild-child granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). And more similarities to the Raymond Chandler...

Everything old is new again when it comes to TV detective shows. First, Natasha Lyonne did her best Columbo on Peacock’s quirky Poker Face, then Clive Owen resurrected iconic gumshoe Sam Spade on AMC’s sleek Monsieur Spade. Now Colin Farrell is taking a shot at the old-school private eye game with Apple TV+’s Sugar — and what do you know, this one works, too. A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar (premiering Friday, Apr. 5; I’ve seen four of the eight episodes) doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel…...

After weeks of moving through scuzzy bars with off-beat cybernetic accouterment, toiling under a static-grey sky to gain control of cyberspace, our heroes have made it to Zion. The Rastafarians who greet these travelers from a ship named for an important historical figure pay little mind to our male protagonist. However, they cannot believe their luck in meeting his female companion, whose reputation far exceeds his.
Regardless of the chilly reception, the protagonist remains undeterred. Zion is, after all, a key part in mission to understand a powerful AI controlling reality.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the above description comes form The Matrix, the groundbreaking sci-fi action movie from 1999 or its sequels. But I’m not describing Neo and Trinity aboard the Nebuchadnezzar. I’m talking about Case and Molly reaching the Rastafarian colony of Zion with help from their ship the Marcus Garvey in the 1984 novel Neuromancer by William Gibson.

The city of Split has long been a tourist magnet, famous for the churches and flagstones of its picturesque Old Town, and for the beauty of the rocky, sparkling Croatian coastline. But not all visitors come for the culture. Some seek the trashier pleasures of rowdy bars and cheap drinks, and all they know of the area’s history is that the spectacular medieval fortress clinging to a nearby cliffside was a “Game of Thrones” location.
Split is also where US filmmaker Travis Wilkerson (“Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun?”) recently lived for a stretch, having resolved — and then failing — to make a movie about the dissolution of Yugoslavia. This he tells us on camera, at the beginning of “Through the Graves the Wind is Blowing,” the film he made instead of that one, and it’s an admission of compromise that somehow never compromises the integrity of what follows: a witty,...

In the penultimate episode of Monsieur Spade, the reason why Zyad was so important to everyone was revealed. George and Cynthia were revealed to be two spies working for the British Intelligence, who wanted to bring Zyad to safety as every other secret organization like Oas wanted the kid, since he was gifted with a special ability to crack any kind of code. Sam Spade didn’t want to get involved in this, but Teresa’s life was in jeopardy as she was Philippe’s daughter and was also a target of Oas, who wanted to get to Philippe through her. In the last episode of this miniseries, the entangled web of mystery is unraveled in haste, which ends in a haphazard way. Let’s discuss what happened in the season finale to resolve our quarrels.

Was Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 6 the end of the story, or just the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the venerable detective?
With the superb cast, masterful writing, and one of the few times that viewers and critics connect, it's hard not to imagine everyone involved hoping this was only the first chapter of a new book about Sam Spade and his exploits in Bozouls.
Of course, it would be odd to have so much happen in the quaint town, but even during the finale, it was noted that it's not so quaint after all.
If you're not a fan of tales being tied up with exposition, you may have been disappointed in Monsieur Spade's final hour.
But if you've been enjoying the banter filling the canyons of Bozouls, then it hit the mark.
This was a highly stylized finale.

As you've undoubtedly heard by now, the Kansas City Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl on Sunday night.

When I have been snooping on social media about reactions to Monsieur Spade Season 1, many people call it slow, which escapes me, and many others say it’s difficult to follow.
This is the episode where things start to make sense, even if to an average person like me, making sense of it doesn’t make it any more palpable.

We are still not much closer to the full picture of the boy and how his mere presence has created such an uproar in Bozouls, but Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 4 began fleshing it out in some detail.
There are many layers to this entertaining mystery, and as one is peeled away, another is revealed.
The past and present are intricately reliant, and the more we know about one, the more we'll know about the other.
The previews for Monsieur Spade had already hinted at Sam's turn at being a badass, but watching him in action, questioning his attacker with amazing physical prowess without ever leaving his chair, was a treat.
That scene spoke directly to Spade's capabilities and what makes him such a formidable enemy and detective. Even after almost losing his life in a chokehold, he's ridiculously calm and in control.
Filming scenes like that must be a hoot.

When a show starts with dialogue as wicked as what we enjoyed between Sam and Philippe in 1955, you know you're in for an entertaining hour.
Every word from Spade's mouth was golden, and Philippe did his best to match him step for step.

Sam: Not really, but then I was too busy wondering what day you might finish talking to listen.

But what you could tell during that conversation on Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 3 is that Philippe was never a match for Sam Spade.
Philippe Saint Andre talks a good game and tries to act as if he's got the world on a string, but like most criminals, he's got little else going for him, and it shows.

The mystery of who killed six nuns in their convent and why deepens with Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 2.
All kinds of things around out of whack. There’s a nun who isn’t, a nosey neighbor, possibly with an ulterior motive, and a shooter who aims to scare rather than kill.
We also got a better idea of the guilt the residents of Bouzols carry with them because of what they did to get rid of Philippe and what anger Jean-Pierre is harboring toward Spade.
But let’s begin at the end when Teresa finally comes clean with Sam about what she witnessed the night before.
We don’t know much about Teresa or her father, but although she’s still desperate to feel loved or wanted by her father, she seems to have absorbed quite a bit from her relationship with Sam Spade.

The iconic detective Sam Spade returns to the screen in AMC‘s gripping limited drama Monsieur Spade. The character, created by Dashiell Hammett and famously played by Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, is revived by Clive Owen, who’s more than up for the task of bringing out the gumshoe’s emotional side as we see a new side of the character. Owen’s Spade is unabashedly influenced by Bogart, Owen tells TV Insider. Diving into Bogart’s work to prepare for the drama was a thrill — and as a longtime fan of the Hollywood icon, something Owen has done many times before. Studying Bogart was easy. Learning French for this series was hard. The year is 1963, and the legendary Detective Sam Spade is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. By contrast to his days as a private eye in San Francisco, Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet.

"Monsieur Spade” is a new live-action crime drama TV miniseries, created by Emmy winners Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, based on author Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel "The Maltese Falcon", starring Clive Owen as world-famous detective 'Sam Spade', forced to come out of his retirement, after learning about the rumored return of a long-time enemy, now airing on AMC and AMC+:
"...the year is 1963, and 'Detective Sam Spade' (Owen) is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. By contrast to his days as a private eye in San Francisco, Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet.
"But the rumored return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been killed at the local convent. As the town grieves, secrets emerge, and new leads are established.
"Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child who is believed to possess great powers.

How does falling in love change a person?
If you’re venerable detective Samuel Spade, it changes the course of your life.
Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 1 introduces us to a brusque man quicker with wit than giving his heart, but the real story begins eight years after he finds and loses the great love of his life.
While this is the Sam Spade Humphrey Bogart played to perfection in The Maltese Falcon, he's obviously older and certainly more jaded, which is a hell of a feat.
We meet the older Spade in the mid-fifties on an assignment to reunite a young girl with her father. Spade plays the tough all the way, but when he finds Teresa snuggled up against him on a stormy night alone in a car, the truth is revealed. Spade’s heart doesn’t match his exterior.
Timing is everything, and on the back of that tender moment,...

Adapted from Samuel Dashiell Hammett’s famous detective novel, The Maltese Falcon, which was also the source for the famous neo-noir film of the same name in 1941, Scott Frank has come up with a new AMC series, Monsieur Spade. This detective series has just released its first episode, introducing us to the world of detective Sam Spade, who lost his ex-partner, Brigid O’Shaughnessy, in Istanbul. Spade had been given the responsibility to take O’Shaughnessy’s young daughter, Teresa, and hand her over to Philippe, who was Teresa’s biological father. However, things didn’t go as planned, and eventually, Spade fell in love with the quaint French village of Bozouls, until one day he had to look into a horrific murder scene that was connected with Philippe and Spade’s past.

It isn’t just you. We’re two weeks into the new year and every show on TV has become a murder mystery.
There are reality murder mysteries (Traitors) and animated murder mysteries (Grimsburg) and British murder mysteries (Criminal Record) and occult murder mysteries (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale). There are murder mysteries without daylight (True Detective: Night Country) and adapted recent murder mysteries (Fool Me Once) and adapted characters in original murder mysteries (Monsieur Spade).
Those are just January premieres. So far. There’ll be at least one more new murder mystery before the end of the week (The Woman in the Wall).
It’s easy to point to the blockbuster success of the two Knives Out movies and the steady success of the Kenneth Branagh/Michael Green-steered Hercule Poirot movies as a business-driven cause.
Sociologically, it’s easy to point to a decade of distrust of institutional policing...

What happens when you take a San Francisco detective and retire him to the South of France? When the rights to the Dashiell Hammett character made famous by Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) became available, writer-director Scott Frank, perhaps emboldened by his Emmy-winning successes with his western series “Godless” and chess sensation “The Queen’s Gambit,” convinced his friend Tom Fontana (“Oz”) to co-create a limited series, “Monsieur Spade” about an older Sam Spade in France.
These two writers had a blast making Spade (Clive Owen) middle-aged and grumpy — his doctor wants him to give up smoking. He’s grieving his lost wife, a Frenchwoman (Chiara Mastroianni) who left him a lovely estate. He reluctantly acts as a father figure for a teenage girl (Cara Bossom) whose mother Brigid O’Shaughnessy sent him eight years ago to Bozouls to deliver her child to her father (Jonathan Zaccaï). The plot is complicated,...

All works of IP exploitation are, on some level, legitimized fanfiction. Once divorced from the original author, the line that separates a franchise’s sequel, prequel or reboot from the average post on Wattpad is a great deal of money and the blessing of an estate and/or corporation. But even with this baseline, the AMC limited series “Monsieur Spade” is an especially unabashed act of wish fulfillment through and for a beloved protagonist. The namesake of “Monsieur Spade” is none other than Sam Spade (Clive Owen), the private investigator who headlined the Dashiell Hammett novel turned John Huston film noir “The Maltese Falcon,” plus a handful of Hammett short stories published in the 1930s. For their spin on Spade, series creators Tom Fontana (“Oz”) and Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”) send the sleuth to the south of France, where he spends a few weeks of his not-so-peaceful retirement looking...

For a character who is at the center of one full-length story, The Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade is as iconic as it gets in the world of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett’s book, and John Huston’s 1941 movie adaptation with Humphrey Bogart, loom impossibly large over the gumshoe genre, to the point where Spade is just as famous as Philip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, who have appeared in far more novels and films over the years.

If you’re on any form of social media, you probably know that on January 1, an early incarnation of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain. This prompted the usual memes putting the beloved character in decidedly adult situations and, in just a few months, we’ll be treated to a Mickey Mouse slasher film.
For a different, more pastoral, approach to elevated fan fic — this one conducted with the approval of the Dashiell Hammett Estate, rather than public domain — look to six-episode limited series Monsieur Spade, which will roll out on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV.
Hailing from the powerhouse creative duo of Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit) and Tom Fontana (Oz) and boasting a likably droll central turn by Clive Owen, Monsieur Spade takes Hammett’s Sam Spade and drops him into a bucolic retirement in the South of France. There, rather than reconfiguring the protagonist for an ironic excursion to the dark side,...

TV Fanatic recently had the chance to catch up with talented actor Clive Owen to discuss his upcoming role as venerable detective Sam Spade in the AMC series Monsieur Spade.
The series follows the detective well after he metaphorically hangs up his detective hat and settles down in France. Is Spade really the type of man who would let a good mystery go unanswered? There wouldn't be a series if he were.
Learn how Owen feels about the incredible honor of stepping into shoes previously worn by Humphrey Bogart and much more with our interview below.

Sam Spade is back on the case.
The iconic private detective famously played by Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon is coming to AMC in Monsieur Spade (premiering this Sunday at 9/8c), with Clive Owen taking on the role. It’s a responsibility that Owen doesn’t take lightly, he tells TVLine: “I’m actually a huge fan of the genre. I’m a huge fan of Bogart, and I know The Maltese Falcon really well… In some way, Spade is the sort of quintessential Bogart character.” So when executive producers Scott Frank and Tom Fontana called Owen to see if he was interested,...

For many a Turner Classic Movies fan, he was immortalized by Humphrey Bogart in 1941’s The Maltese Falcon. Private eyes don’t come much more hardboiled than Sam Spade, the shamus par excellence who goes Gallic in Monsieur Spade, an evocative six-part period thriller from Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit). As the latest incarnation of Spade, circa 1963, Clive Owen cuts a more elegant figure of rugged and world-weary charisma, with banter that cuts like a knife and a wisecrack for any occasion. When told to “drop dead,” he quips, “I’m working on it,” expressing film noir fatalism with every drag of his ever-present cigarette. Spade’s sardonic attitude is pungent as ever when the melancholy gumshoe, now a brooding widower with a vineyard, retires to the serene French village of Bouzols, which suddenly becomes a hotbed of international intrigue. “I’m...

To some, it may seem blasphemous to go anywhere near new content that centers Sam Spade. Who would dare pick up the pen of Dashiell Hammett or step into the shoes of Humphrey Bogart? Luckily, the pedigree behind AMC’s excellent “Monsieur Spade” is one of the highest in years. Co-created by Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, and executive produced by Barry Levinson, this brightly-lit noir is one of the best recent TV originals, a smart, sexy, deeply philosophical piece of storytelling that values things like dialogue, character, and theme over the high concepts that have defined so much TV in the 2020s.

Few can pull off the fedora/trenchcoat look these days, regardless of how diligently the items are tailored to fit. It's probably on purpose, then, that Clive Owen, who steps into the Sam Spade role made famous by Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, doesn't wear the private investigator's outfit very often in Monsieur Spade; it looks too goofy on him. That's about as apt a metaphor needs to be for AMC's six-part television event from Scott Frank and Tom Fontana: All the salacious bells and whistles that come with Monsieur Spade — international conspiracies, murder, a faint whiff of the supernatural, folks who aren't what they seem — should be a snug fit given that it’s riffing off of the works of Dashiell Hammett. Instead, these affected noir elements hang off Spade like that ill-fitting number.

The James Bond-esque opening sequence of Monsieur Spade sees a glimmering 1950s whip winding down a spectacular country road in the south of France. Inside the car is Sam Spade (Clive Owen) and a doe-eyed young girl, Teresa (Ella Feraud), whom the legendary detective, first introduced in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, is trying to reunite with her father. When plans go awry and the pair end up stranded, they’re rescued by a glamorous French woman named Gabrielle (Chiara Mastroianni). She, we learn, will become Spade’s wife.
Flash forward eight years and Spade is a broken-hearted widower overseeing Gabrielle’s estate near the town of Bozouls, and he’s placed the teenaged Teresa (now played by Cara Bossom) in a local convent. But what led Spade to a remote town in France with the young girl in the first place? And what occurred in the subsequent eight...

Peter Lorre was an amazing actor, we don’t need to beat that horse to death. However, beyond his emotive skills was that voice – that incredible voice. His take as Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon is a superb example of the unconvincing convincer. When he tells Sam Spade to “kindly clasp your hands behind your neck” it’s no surprise that the table is turned faster than a Lazy Susan. There was a comic – I can’t remember who – who did a quick impression of Lorre as a sportscaster, running down how one team killed, murdered… annihilated the other. In that voice.
