Those who attain a gatekeeper role in Hollywood don’t usually aspire to be on the other end of the submissions pile. But in the digital age, the traditional entertainment career ladder has disappeared. For Theo Dumont and Daniel Sol, who have spent a decade organizing the HollyShorts Film Festival, producing their own content was the next career step. “It’s a natural evolution for us,” Dumont told Backstage. Not that they’re entirely greenhorns; Sol produced and starred in the 2009 low-budget indie feature “Night Before the Wedding.” The partners have grown the festival from screenings of about 20 shorts in 2005 to a venue that showcased some 400 short films earlier this year. Now Dumont and Sol are taking similar steps as their attendees—they’ve set up a Kickstarter page and are trying to generate buzz for a production through social media.
