Finland’s Tekele has announced that a second season of Yle original youth series “The Short Fuse” is in the works.
Directed by Jani Ilomäki, also behind police series “Roba,” it will be written by Pilke Salo, Milla Tuokkola and Janne Vanhanen and shot over June-July 2024, eyeing a 2025 release on Yle Areena.
Starring are Pyry Rautiainen, spotted in Selma Vilhunen’s drama “Little Wing,” Minttu Halttula and Elsa Lagerstedt.
“International interest has been very wide,” said producer Julia Elomäki, singling out French-speaking territories.
“Once again, the show is handling harsh and timely themes with honesty. Given the excellent reception of the first season, it proves there is a point in making ambitious series for younger audiences.”
Directed by Petra Lumioksa, the show’s first outing gained a lot of traction on social media as well.
“Especially on TikTok,” noted Elomäki.
“I have always considered the young audience to be important.

As the end of the first decade of the Finnish Film Affair nears, the industry event’s director, Maria Pirkkalainen, who also heads Nordic Flair, notes its phenomenal growth, with more than 200 Finnish film projects showcased, more than 500 international guests brought to Helsinki, and the establishment of a major platform and networking forum for locals.
And things keep evolving, she says: “We are thrilled to now branch out to offer this to filmmakers from our neighboring Nordic countries as well. Not to mention we’ve curated over 2,000 meetings between our guests during all these years. And introduced hundreds of people to the art of sauna.”
The traditional sweat-soaked industry mixer, just one of the signature events of Finnish Film Affair, is typical of the creative approaches Pirkkalainen and her team have embraced in her three years leading the event.
The key driver, she says, is a focus on learning and...

Finland’s Tekele Productions, composed of Julia Elomäki, Miia Haavisto, Marja Pihlaja and Tia Talli, will present three new projects at the Finnish Film Affair this year. “Bad Women” will be shown in the Fiction in Progress section, Variety has learned, while Ulla Heikkilä’s “Viva la Vida” – about a Finnish expat family living in southern Spain – and “The Beast Friend” will make their way to Fiction in Development. The latter, described as a “bedtime story for adults,” and set to premiere in 2024, will see director Lauri-Matti Parppei exploring a rather unusual bond forming between a struggling artist and a massive bear.

The Berlin International Film Festival’s European Film Market (EFM) has confirmed details for how its online incarnation will work March 1-5.
As Deadline revealed, Dennis Ruh took the reins at the EFM in September 2020 and faces an unconventional first edition.
“International sales agents have filled their lineups for the start of the year and have an attractive variety of films on offer. Many films are also currently in production and ready for pre-sales. We want the digital EFM in 2021 to be an impulse for a new beginning in the international film industry,” said Ruh today. “Since the EFM is an integral part of an international convention calendar, and therefore part of an economic system that includes events such as the Marché du Film in Cannes and the American Film Market in Los Angeles, a later date is not an option.”

The highly anticipated drama by Ulla Heikkilä will venture where few dare to go: straight to a Christian camp. Ulla Heikkilä’s first feature, Eden – set, of all places, in a Christian camp – is bound to stand out among a slew of new Finnish releases, if just for one reason, rarely addressed by her colleagues, at least unless their name is Klaus Härö: religion. “I was interested in the way confirmation camps create a world of their own, far from everyday reality,” says the director, still optimistic about the film’s planned end-of-July premiere. “It forces the participants to redefine their relationship with their community and with themselves. The questions my characters face are quite universal: where do I belong? Do I want to belong there? Do I need the sense of belonging?” Over the course of one summer week, some of these questions might even be answered. “I’m interested.
London-based sales agency Film Republic has boarded Finnish film “Eden” as it prepares for the European Film Market in Berlin. The company has released a teaser for the film.
“Eden,” the debut feature film by Ulla Heikkilä, is produced by Miia Haavisto from Tekele Productions. It will be released in Finland in the summer by Nordisk Film.
A coming-of-age film about a religious summer camp, Eden tells the story through the eyes of three youths who are torn between ideology, independence and falling in love.
Heikkilä said: “It’s been a wonderful experience to be making a coming-of-age film. For me, youth is condensed humanity: it’s almost like being an adult but not having had the time to get used to all the drama that life consists of. The bliss and the pain of growing up move me, maybe because I’m still feeling both all the time. I...
