"La Flor Más Bella/The Most Beautiful Flower" is Netflix's latest teen series, and in many ways, it seems like your typical coming-of-age story. The 10-part series follows underdog Mich as she sets out to conquer high school. But the show is clear from the very beginning that it's distinct. It's set in Mexico, told in Spanish, and targeted to anyone who's ever felt different.
"Having a curvy, brunette, Mexican protagonist who embraces popular and folkloric traditions and customs, and who also knows she is fabulous and is proud to be all of that, representing so many, it's the best revolution," show cocreator Michelle Rodríguez says. "La Flor Más Bella" is loosely based on her life, growing up in Xochimilco, a neighborhood in Mexico City famous for its canals and colorful barges.
According to executive producer and Campanario Entertainment's cofounder Jaime Dávila, Netflix originally reached out wanting to...

Wild Bunch TV-sold “Albatros,” Turner Latin America’s banner title “Amarres” and REInvent Studios’ globe-trotting “Peacemaker” will feature at a 54 series-strong Buyers Showcase, which launches today March 25 as a backbone of Series Mania’s online Digital Forum, Europe’s first big festival experiment in a virtual marketplace.
Also featuring a powerful Co-Pro Pitching lineup, packed by pedigree producers and creatives, the Digital Forum’s industry audience, such as the number of accredited distributors, still has to be confirmed.
Some high-profile titles are missing: Opener “The Luminaries,” for example, from Fremantle and Working Title, and HBO closer “Run.” That said, the Buyer’s Showcase looks set to include five of Series Mania’s original 10 main competition entries and 13 of its 15 International Panorama titles, the festival’s two main sections.
Looking to the long-haul, as it also address urgent financial fall-out from Covid-19, the industry needs festival selection more than ever.

Madrid — Mexico is a magnet. Netflix produces near twice as many originals there (40) as in France (23) or Germany (23), according to Ampere Analysis. Among Latin America’s biggest cable powers with a 2019 24% audience share in Latin America, and five of its top 10 channels , not so long ago Turner Latin America hardly produced Mexican series.
Now it is now hunkering down in the U.S. neighbor, its Natpe slate of new originals led by a trio of Mexican titles, romantic dramedy “Amarres,” “The Cleaning Lady,” a thriller, and “Las Bravas,” about a women’s soccer team. Caught just before Natpe, Tomas Yankelevich, Turner Latin America’s Evp & chief content officer, General Entertainment, drilled down on its Mexican drive and what the slate says about Turner Latin America’s ambitions as parent company Warner Media prepares to launch Ott service HBO Max this semester. Variety notes five key points:

In the wake of its streaming rights acquisition by Amazon Prime, epic series “Hernan” has sold to Mexican broadcaster Azteca and pan-regional pay TV network, The History Channel, which have jointly acquired the series for their respective platforms.
Produced by Mexico’s Dopamine, a Salinas Group unit, and Spain’s Onza Entertainment, the eight-episode mega-series marks the 500th Anniversary of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes’ arrival in Mexico. It is expected to bow later this year via the various outlets. Azteca seemed a likely platform for the series as it is also owned by the Salinas Group.
Set in 1519, the ambitious series turns on the conquest of Mexico by Cortés and his troops, and will feature key characters’ perspectives of this tumultuous time in Mexico and Spain’s history.
The series aims to highlight both the encounter and contrast of these two cultures as well as the human side of Cortes,...
