The subjects of The Staircase, Hoop Dreams, Capturing the Friedmans and others contribute to this thoughtful film about the duty of care film-makers owe those whose stories they tell
If you’ve seen the sensational true crime documentary series The Staircase, you’ll know the story. In 2001, after Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the stairs at her home in North Carolina, police suspicion turned to her novelist husband Michael Peterson. When he allowed a documentary team to film what happened next, Peterson said it was because he was worried about getting a fair trial. His adopted daughter, Margaret Ratliff, 20 at the time, grief-stricken and terrified that her dad could be facing the death penalty, agreed to be part of the film. The loss of her privacy in the years since has been devastating, she admits now. “I can’t tell you how painful it is, reliving...

Giphy wants to elevate the humble Gif from meme-factory punchlines into… well, works of art.
The Gif search-engine startup has unveiled the Giphy Film Fest to celebrate “micro-film” creators, offering one grand-prize winner a $10,000 cash prize as well as a five-year website-hosting subscription from sponsor Squarespace.
Starting Wednesday (Aug. 15), Giphy is soliciting submissions for original GIFs of 18 seconds or less in five categories. Entries will be judged by a jury of creatives. Finalists will be screened at an invitation-only event Nov. 8 at New York City’s Metrograph theater, followed by the announcement of the grand-prize winner.
But can you really flesh out a narrative arc in a looping Gif that’s no more than 18 seconds?
“You can fully make a horror film or rom-com in 18 seconds,” said Tiffany Vazquez, Giphy’s content development manager for film. “At its core, the Giphy Film Fest is about pushing the boundaries of the...

The Angulo brothers, the movie-loving sextet at the center of Crystal Moselle's prizewinning Sundance documentary "The Wolfpack," is taking on a new medium: contemporary art. Former MoCA director Jeffrey Deitch will open "The Wolfpack Show," including homemade materials from their reenactments of modern classics like "Reservoir Dogs," at his Soho gallery later this month. (Listen to Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson's conversation with Moselle, during a live taping of "Screen Talk" from this year's Sundance.) Read More: "Watch: 'The Wolfpack' Does De Niro" The show, scheduled to coincide with the release of the book "Wolves Like Us: Portraits of the Angulo Brothers," as well as the DVD edition of "The Wolfpack," also marks the premiere of Mukunda Angulo's new short, "Window Feel." Isolated in their Lower East Side apartment by their tyrannical, paranoid father, the brothers re-created the outside world within...

Read More: Sundance Review: Sheltered Kids Find the World Through Movies in Fascinating Doc 'The Wolfpack' Crystal Moselle's peculiar documentary "The Wolfpack," about the eccentric and pop-culture obsessed Angulo brothers, has been a subject of curiosity and speculation since its premiere at Sundance earlier this year. "The Wolfpack Show," a new art exhibition featuring much of the Angulo's work, may offer a new peek into the minds of the brothers. Boasting original artworks, costumes and props from the brothers, the exhibition will also feature the premiere of "Window Feel," a site-specific installation of the brothers' first cinematic work. The film, which is written by Mukunda Angulo, also features original costumes and set design and will be presented in conjunction with portraits of the brothers by Dan Martensen for his book, "Wolves Like Us: Portraits of the Angulo Brothers." "The Wolfpack Show" will be...

Anyone who’s seen Crystal Moselle’s The Wolfpack knows that the Angulo brothers have a flair for costuming, and those talents are on full display in Mukunda Angulo’s Mirror Heart, a rather abstract short film made for Vice. Billed as “an imaginative tale about a cast of dreamlike characters who unify around the necessity to create,” Mirror Heart also employs the voice acting of a handful of the brothers as that nagging, negative portion of one’s creative conscience. Check out the short above and a making of video at the link.

From being essentially imprisoned in a tiny apartment on the Lower East Side of New York City to being the toast of film festivals and the subject of an episode of ABC’s “20/20,” things have turned out well for the Angulo Brothers. Recently, Vice teamed up with the brothers to create a short film utilizing the talents they demonstrated in Crystal Moselle’s claustrophobically intimate and tender documentary “The Wolfpack” —read our Sundance review here— but this time they’re not recreating one of their favorite movies. Read More: Sundance Review: Potentially Compelling Documentary 'The Wolfpack' Plagued By Unanswered Questions Directed by Mukunda Angulo —though he's not the oldest brother, he frequently functions as the leader— the short, titled “Mirror Heart,” runs just over six minutes and plays as a David Lynch movie by way of Michel Gondry’s Diy sensibility, centering on “a cast of dreamlike characters who unify.
