Exclusive: Netflix has locked down rights to an untitled adult thriller spec from Michael Werwie, with Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan set to produce for Aggregate Films, sources tell Deadline.
Plot details are under wraps. Falling under Aggregate’s first-look deal with Netflix across film and TV, the sale comes at a busy time for the company, which most recently set up comedy The Chaperone at the streamer, as a potential star vehicle for Bateman. Recently bringing in Amblin vet John Buderwitz to serve as VP of Film, the company also last summer teamed with Netflix in a bidding war over David Gauvey Herbert’s 2021 Esquire magazine article “Daddy Ball,” which is being developed as a limited series for Bateman to direct, star in, and co-ep alongside Costigan and Roxie Rodriguez.

Updated Throughout: Law enforcement officials and investigators used cell phone data, DNA evidence and computer search histories to zero in on the suspect in the Long Island serial killer case, explained Ray Tierney, Suffolk County, New York, District Attorney, in a press briefing this afternoon.
Among other bits of evidence presented to a grand jury since the formation of an investigative task force last year were hairs found on the bodies of at least three victims, hairs that provided DNA that matched DNA found on a pizza crust discarded by suspect Rex Heuermann.
Tierney also said that Heuermann had been linked to various “burner” cell phones – a different phone allegedly used to contact each victim and then discarded after the murder – and that cell phone tower data linked locations frequented by Heuermann – his Massapequa Park home, his Midtown Manhattan office – to calls made to the victims.

In 2010, the disappearance of 24 year old Shannan Gilbert, on Oak Island in New York state helped trigger the finding of four bodies. The bodies all belonged to young women who had been sex workers, all wrapped in burlap and buried in shallow graves. Further bodies, dating back to the 90s, were later found and the killer (or killers) has never been caught.
Lost Girls focuses on the beginning of this case, the aftermath of the disappearance of Shannan and the effect it had on her mother Mari (Amy Ryan) and younger sisters (Thomasin McKenzie and Oona Laurence) as well as on the families of the first four girls found.
The title Lost Girls has a dual meaning here, it of course refers to the victims, who were women whose killer appears to have assumed had nobody to miss or look for them, in many cases women who still don’t have names.

Unsated curiosity after watching a dramatization of real-life events — that rush to Google names, faces and dates — is quite frequently a validation of the importance or intrigue of a subject. But a movie like “Lost Girls,” about the victims of the never-found Long Island serial killer, highlights the possibility that some stories inspire questions because they aren’t especially well told.
Award-winning filmmaker Liz Garbus (“The Fourth Estate”) vividly captures the outrage and desperation of a mother seeking answers from indifferent authorities after her daughter disappears. Still, it’s hard to know if Garbus’ overwrought portrayal of these crimes and their aftermath depicts the actual investigation fairly, or if the former documentarian sacrificed accuracy for what proves to be short-term emotional effect.

Documentarian Liz Garbus, who makes her narrative feature directing debut adapting Robert Kolker’s 2013 serial-killer best-seller “Lost Girls,” knows a gripping true story when she hears one. Two of her documentaries, “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “The Farm: Angola, USA,” were Oscar-nominated. In “Lost Girls,” she directs actors for the first time, with Amy Ryan as Mari, mother of murder victim Shannan Gilbert. Gabriel Byrne, Thomasin McKenzie and Lola Kirke co-star in the story of a woman trying to get answers about the fate of her daughter, a sex worker who vanishes in a remote Long Island, N.Y. beach community. The film bows March 13 on Netflix.
Garbus will continue her exploration of true crime with the upcoming docu-series “The Innocence Files” for Netflix and Golden State Killer docu-series “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” for HBO.

On Jan. 16, the same day Netflix dropped the first trailer for its movie “Lost Girls” — the story of how Mari Gilbert (Amy Ryan), a grieving, furious mother of a missing young woman, revealed that a serial killer was operating on Long Island, N.Y. — the Suffolk County Police Department called a press conference to discuss the case. According to Newsday, at the press conference, the police revealed a belt they called new evidence. But in the same account, the police department was accused by the Gilbert family’s attorney of having held onto the belt for years.
The police also announced a new website, gilgonews.com, that’s been created to receive tips about the murders. Between 10 and 16 women were killed in the ’90s and 2000s, and the case of the Long Island serial killer has never been solved.

Seven months after Shannan Gilbert went missing, a body was found on a desolate stretch of a Long Island parkway. It wasn’t Shannan’s body, and neither was the next one or the next one or even the next one; it wasn’t until authorities had discovered ten bodies on that same stretch of Ocean Parkway that Shannan was found. By then, her mother Mari had already spent months knocking on doors, imploring the police to investigate, and bonding with the other women left in the wake of what would end up being one of America’s most mysterious serial killers. It’s the kind of ripped-from-the-headlines drama that seems like Garbus, who has long been motivated by stories about remarkable women and horrible crimes, makes a strong showing with “Lost Girls,” her first narrative feature in her decades-long career.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, And Vile focuses on the life and trials of Ted Bundy, the infamous serial killer convicted of slaughtering thirty women and suspected of ending the lives of many more. The movie, however, is unexpectedly devoid of any actual murder.
The creative choice is certainly an interesting one, as the audience is never able to fully get a glimpse of Bundy being the monster that society now knows him to be. It turns out that this decision by writer Michael Werwie was intentional, with the scribe saying:
“I was compelled by all of the mundane domestic details of his life and I thought an interesting way into a serial killer’s story would be to show no serial killing at all. I wanted to explore the love story of it all. This is more of a human side of the story. It’s about the people who...

Chicago – Hearing the details of tragic stories, we often find it hard to understand how they got into that situation in the first place, especially since all the red flags are so obvious to us. “I’d never be so dumb,” we tell ourselves.
“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile” takes us through how easy it is to miss something that we’ve never truly seen.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, not just for his brutality and the methods of corpse desecration, but because of how mainstream his case became. The “If it bleeds, it leads” television news mentality could have found its roots with this case, especially since it was the first televised case of its kind. The fascination of the case stretched well beyond the details and focused much more on the subject to the point of fanaticism. Much of this we already knew,...

What is the fascination with Ted Bundy? The infamous serial killer has long captured the attention of the masses, largely due to his charisma and attractiveness. So, it does make sense that a movie star would want to play Bundy. Coming as a companion piece to the Netflix documentary series Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, this week brought a narrative take on the man with Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile. Both are on the streaming service and both are helmed by Joe Berlinger. Unfortunately, while there’s a compelling lead turn here, there’s ultimately nothing to be learned about the killer, making for an empty experience. The film is a biopic/crime drama about the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy (Zac Efron). In part told through the eyes of Liz Kendall (Lily Collins), a single mother and Ted’s girlfriend, we watch as they meet,...

There’s a daring concept behind this off-kilter Netflix movie about the kinder and gentler side of serial killer Ted Bundy that should have worked: How can a pretty face blind us to the demon lurking inside? Zac Efron perfectly embodies the hotness that drew women to law-student Bundy even after it became painfully obvious that this burglar, kidnapper, rapist, necrophile and mass murderer had strangled, bludgeoned and mutilated at least 30 women (there could be more) across seven states in the mid to late 1970s.

“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” the stridently descriptive and wordy title for Joe Berlinger’s narrative feature about Ted Bundy, could have been more conveniently used to refer to Lars von Trier’s “The House That Jack Built.” That ghastly picture from the Danish auteur revels in the grotesque and sadistic exploits of a serial murderer, as the monster intellectualizes his crimes and is outspoken about his desire to kill.
“Extremely Wicked” takes a completely opposite approach to engaging with the actions of its own hazardous charmer. Working from Michael Werwie’s Blacklist script, Berlinger — whose career in documentary has concentrated on the perpetrators and victims of heinous crimes — adamantly refrains from displaying explicit physical violence, opting instead to dwell on the efficacy of Bundy’s manipulation tactics. To that end, “Extremely Wicked” is less a play-by-play perusal of the killer’s methods and perversions, and more an examination...

Zac Efron offers a chilling look at serial killer Ted Bundy in Netflix’s stark new trailer for the drama “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.”
“Extremely Wicked” premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and portrays Bundy’s crimes from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), who refused to believe the truth about him for years.
“For years, I’ve carried this guilt that I’m to blame for everything,” Collins says in the trailer.
The footage begins with Collins waiting to have a jailhouse chat with Efron, and recollecting the night they first met and their initial flirtations.
Collins then asks, “Ted — did you do it?” with an emotion-free Efron responding simply, “No.”
Bundy was arrested in 1975 and tried for murder in 1979. Shortly before his execution in 1989, Bundy confessed to 30 homicides committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978.
Joe Berlinger directed from a screenplay by Michael Werwie.

Necrophiliac serial killer Ted Bundy seems to be en vogue at the moment. Joe Berlinger’s documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes was a huge hit, yet led to Netflix putting out a statement reminding their viewers that this is not somebody to take a fancy to. That said, they’re going about it in a funny way, as they recently picked up Berlinger’s second Bundy project: Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
This one stars hunky heartthrob Zac Efron as Bundy, and judging by the latest trailer (above), they’re not shying away from portraying him as a seductive and charismatic individual. Among other things, the preview gives us a look into the structure of the movie, showing how Bundy’s girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins) was manipulated in order to believe that he’d been falsely accused.

Netflix unveiled a new trailer for “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” the Ted Bundy biopic starring Zac Efron, on Tuesday and announced a release of May 3 for when the film will be available on the streamer and in select theaters.

“This is all going to end,” Efron’s Bundy says solemnly in the trailer. “It’s all going to end with the truth,” Lily Collins replies to him during prison visit.

Bundy was arrested in 1975 and tried for murder in 1979. Shortly before his execution in 1989, Bundy confessed to 30 homicides committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978.
Joe Berlinger directed from a screenplay by Michael Werwie,. The cast also includes Jim Parsons, Haley Joel Osment, John Malkovich, and Kaya Scodelario.
In his Variety review, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised Efron’s performance, writing, “He’s startlingly good: controlled, magnetic, audacious, committed, and eerily right.”

Sundance Review: ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’ Puts a Spin on the Serial Killer Drama
From exhaustive investigative documentaries to slick, disturbing thrillers to even meta tales of destruction courtesy of Lars von Trier, it seems like the serial killer movie has been covered from every possible angle. Enter the Ted Bundy drama Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which begins as a sympathetic perspective of an insider’s look at living with a killer before being taken over by a disarmingly charismatic Zac Efron in a scenery-chewing spectacle. While there are compelling aspects to both sides, the result is a film that wants to have it both ways, ultimately coming up short.
With the disturbing crimes of Ted Bundy already well-publicized, we (almost) never see any of his gruesome exploits on screen. Instead, director Joe Berlinger plants us in his domestic life, tracking the relationship with his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lilly Collins) and her child. As 16mm-styled home footage of their family life plays,...

The first trailer for “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” has been released and Zac Efron is just as creepy as you would expect, playing serial killer Ted Bundy as viewed through the eyes of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer.
And Efron has certainly taken to the part, winking at cameras, putting on the charm in front of kids and playing the media for saps during his circus of a trial after he had been accused of murder.
“I’m more popular than Disney World,” Efron’s Bundy said in the trailer. “Let me get back to plotting my escape here.”

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for a new year of the Sundance Film Festival, but we’re now less than two months away, and this writer is extremely excited to head to Park City once again, especially after digging into Sundance’s initial lineup announcement today. Not only does their Midnight slate look insanely great, but there are a ton of films running in Sundance’s other programming tracks that I am beyond excited to see in January.
Some of the highlights from today’s lineup announcement include Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which chronicles the life of Ted Bundy (played by Zac Efron) through the experiences of his girlfriend; Paradise Hills, which stars Emma Roberts, Milla Jovovich, and Awkwafina; Relive from producer Jason Blum; Dan Gilroy’s Buzzsaw; and the Alien-themed documentary Memory. Well, that didn’t take long.
It was only a few days ago that we heard Metallica frontman James Hetfield had joined Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, the upcoming Ted Bundy movie from director Joe Berlinger. From what we understand, he’ll play Officer Bob Hayward, “a no-nonsense Utah highway patrol veteran who was the first law enforcement officer to arrest Bundy in 1975 after pulling the killer over and discovering burglary tools in his car, but wisely suspecting much worse.”
We’re unsure of how large a role it is, but it’s nice to see the singer climbing on board the project regardless and now, we’ve got our first look at him in the film. Down in the gallery below, along with a few other recent set pics, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of Hetfield as Hayward, seemingly interrogating Bundy (Zac Efron) while Berlinger directs the scene.

Well, this is certainly some odd casting news.
Deadline is reporting tonight that the upcoming Ted Bundy movie, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile has recruited Metallica frontman James Hetfield into its ranks. From what we understand, he’ll portray Officer Bob Hayward, who was the first cop to ever arrest Bundy. Though the singer’s appeared in various films and TV series over the years, he’s only shown up as himself, so this will be his first true acting role.
Hetfield joins a cast that already includes Zac Efron as the iconic serial killer, along with Lilly Collins, Jim Parsons and John Malkovich, among others. There’s no word yet on how big of a part Hayward plays in the story, but we’re certainly excited to see the music legend snagging a role here and look forward to hearing more about his involvement.

Never let it be said that Zac Efron isn’t open to taking some risks. For his next project, the “High School Musical” and “Baywatch” star is moving very firmly away from comedic and family-friendly fare into darker waters. In Joe Berlinger’s upcoming biopic, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” Efron takes on the role of Ted Bundy, one of America’s most prolific and terrifying serial killers. Bundy was executed in 1989 after confessing to the murder of dozens of women, including a 12-year-old.
The new film is still in production, but it’s already garnered a heady amount of buzz, much of it thanks to Efron’s own willingness to share insider photos from the set on his social media channels, providing his followers a look inside a project that doesn’t look to be toning down the more terrifying elements of Bundy’s story. Aided by a starry cast,...

Zac Efron might not be what you’d call an Oscar caliber actor, but the former High School Musical star is definitely working hard lately to reinvent himself in Hollywood and become a bonafide leading man. In recent years, he’s delivered some impressive performances in films like Neighbors and its equally enjoyable sequel, among others. And while his movies aren’t always hits critically or commercially, he has shown real growth as an actor since first breaking onto the scene.
Now, after dabbling in R-rated humor and shenanigans, it looks like Efron is finally ready to try his hand at something a bit darker and more serious, as he’s all set to star in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, Joe Berlinger’s psychological thriller about serial killer Ted Bundy.
