Main Reactor was established in 2002 by Roger Murray and his wife Felicity Letcher in response to a growing need in Auckland for an established props and special effects workshop that provided a range of facilities to service feature film, television drama and commercial projects. Since 2002 Main Reactor has grown to become the premiere props and prosthetics workshop in Auckland working with clients in film, television, and live performance. The company has also moved into involvement with large permanent projects such as work on Stage One of the Te Waoi Nui for the Auckland Zoo and Rainbow Springs in Rotorua.
Main Reactor considers itself to be to storytellers and enjoys being a key part of the creative evolution of any project - large or small. The company is committed to providing high quality design and innovative product for their clients. Roger and his team have crafted a reputation for fine technical expertise combined with a commitment to innovation and problem solving. They have a proven track record as skilled managers of multiple large projects with varying design and manufacturing requirements. Over the past fifteen years they have developed a network of key collaborators that augment their business. These combine to make Main Reactor the first choice for many designers nationally and internationally. Main Reactor's recent credits include Creature and Makeup Effects Design and Props Manufacture for The Shannara Chronicles Season 1 and Season 2 (MTV/Viacom), Creature and Prosthetic Effects Design and Props Manufacture for Ash Versus Evil Dead Season 1 and 2 (Starz), Props Manufacture for MEG (Warner Bros.). Other credits include Prosthetic Effects for Evil Dead (2012), Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and Props Design and manufacture on the Legend of The Seeker series (ABC Network) and props manufacture and prosthetics supervisor and manufacture for Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Starz network) with Rob Tapert as executive producer
Main Reactor has won two MOA awards for Makeup Effects for their work on New Zealand feature films White Lies and Deathgasam and a highly valued Saturn award for the work on the Evil Dead remake (2012)
Since establishing Main Reactor, Roger has been Head Technician for Costume Props on The Last Samurai, Head Of Department for Props Making on The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Bridge to Teribithia, and Prince Caspian. He was Props Designer on 30 Days of Night, Aliens In The Attic, The Warriors Way, Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans and Wolverine. Main Reactor also provided props for Avatar. Main Reactor's commercial clients grew to include Goodoil, Flying Fish, Silverscreen, Motion Pictures, Film Construction, Prodigy, Luscious International, Flying Fish and Cherokee Films. He also worked with many PR companies on a variety of events and major projects including the Ginger Beer for Lion Breweries and work for other companies including Alt Group, Inside Out, Mr Smith and Spark PR.
Main Reactor has a fully equipped 750 sq. foot workshop in Henderson. The workshop is fully OSCH approved with dangerous good store and two large ventilation systems. The workshop has it's own health and safety policy and manual which is fully compliant with the current Health and Safety legislation. Roger Murray has worked to develop a variety of add on services to provide value to their clients. This includes a 3D jet printer, which has been used extensively by a wide range of clients, laser printer and urethane spray coating capability. The spray-coating arm has been used particularly by wardrobe departments to create lightweight armour. They have also worked with a diverse range of clients including creating cave sets for Yogi Bear, sets for NBR New Zealand Opera and large forest environments for Pacific Renaissance's Spartacus. In 2010 they competed successfully for the subcontract to create the rock elements for the Night Forest, Kiwi and Tuatara enclosure's for Stage One of Te Wao Nui for the Auckland Zoo and dinosaurs and theming for Rainbow Springs.
Main Reactor continues to expand their vision and capability in the Australian entertainment and creative sector by up skilling their key contractors and investing in infrastructure. Their aim is to be one of the go to special effects, props and model making workshop in Australasia and part of the key infrastructure in the Auckland creative sector.
