Amazon Prime Video has announced its first slate of Malaysian content and localized user experience, including its first Malaysian Originals, romantic drama series That Cover Girl and action film Budak Flat.
Budak Flat is produced by Skop Production, with Syafiq Yusof on board as advisor, and co-directed by Eugene Lim, Woo Ming Jin and Faizal Ishak. The cast is headed by Pablo Amirul, Zahiril Adzim, Nabila Huda, Aaron Aziz, Balan Kash and Yung Raja.
“The film explores the rivalry between two criminal brothers who find their relationship tested to a deadly conclusion when a murder triggers a gang war in their flat,” said Budak Flat producer Shamin Yusof. “It’s a uniquely Malaysian action film that we hope will find audiences across the globe on Prime Video.”
Skop Productions is one of Malaysia’s biggest production houses with credits including hits Mat Kilau, Munafik and the Abang Long Fadil franchise.

Malaysia has been undergoing something of an action movie renaissance in recent years. And not just any style of action movie ... while most Se Asian countries have tended to turn to the relative cost certainties of martial arts action films - where once you find your actor all you need is time - Malaysia been going big and slick and trying to beat the Us players at their own game. While the format may be overly familiar there's something undeniably effective going on in the trailer for director Syafiq Yusof's Villa Nabila. Presented as a documentary purporting to explore the true stories behind a notorious haunted house in Johor, Malaysia the film plays out in standard documentary format employing a mix of talking head interviews, reconstructed footage and supposed 'actual' footage from the site and perhaps its this blend - the acknowledgement of the artificial - that restores some effectiveness to the format. Either that or it's just that Yusof is shooting the hell out of his story. Whichever it may be, this looks like a very entertaining entry into the mock-doc canon.
