In 1991, just after he turned 15, he climbed Thunder Bay's local mountain, Mt. McKay with his grade school friend. After about mid-way through the climb, Corey slipped on some shale and slid down the face of the mount, his friend falling with him. He suffered only minor scrapes and bruises on his left side, stopping his fall by grabbing onto a tree, stopping his plummet. His friend however, suffered a fractured tibia.
