CBS has given full season orders to its three freshman dramas — “East New York,” “So Help Me Todd,” and “Fire Country.”
“CBS is off to a tremendous start this season, said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “We are thrilled to have the three most watched new series, each with their own unique settings, characters and storylines. These dramas are elevating our already successful lineup, resonating with diverse audiences both on-air and on streaming, and continuing to grow each week.”
“We thank the talented casts, executive producers and their incredible writing and production teams for bringing these shows to life,” Kahl added. “Additional kudos to our CBS programming teams for shepherding these series to success. We are delighted to give them well deserved full season orders.”
According to Nielsen’s Live+7 data as of Oct. 16, “Fire Country” is averaging 8.3 million viewers per episode, while “East New York” is at 7.4 million per episode.

CBS is wasting little time in locking down its trio of first-year scripted shows.
The network has extended the orders for East New York, Fire Country and So Help Me Todd after promising starts for all three. CBS is calling the extensions “full season orders,” though it hasn’t set episode counts for the trio. In the era of shorter season orders, a full run can mean anything from 15 or 16 episodes to the once-standard 22.
The pickups for the three shows come as little surprise, as Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd are the three most watched rookie network shows of the 2022-23 season so far. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Fire Country drew 8.26 million viewers over seven days for its series debut. East New York is averaging 7.37 million over its first two episodes — and is the top-rated new series (and No.

The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 16-19 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.
The business has changed markedly in the three years since industry insiders last gathered in person at Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and the like. The pandemic accelerated television’s embrace of on-demand streaming platforms and direct-to-consumer distribution models.
But broadcast TV still has its sway — just look at the list of top performing series on the largest SVOD platforms.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. This post will be updated throughout upfront week.

CBS has ordered three new drama shows for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. According to sources, the network has decided not to move forward with any of its four comedy pilots.
The network has picked up the police drama “East New York,” the firefighter drama “Fire Country” (formerly known as “Cal Fire”), and legal drama “So Help Me Todd.” The comedies “Rust Belt News,” “Unplanned in Akron,” “Sober Companion,” and “The Hug Machine” have been passed over.
“East New York” follows Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren), the newly promoted deputy inspector of East New York, a working-class neighborhood at the edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.
The cast also includes Kevin Rankin, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez,...

CBS has given series orders to three of its five drama pilots, Max Thieriot’s Fire Country (fka Cal Fire); East New York, headlined by Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits; and So Help Me Todd (fka Untitled Mother & Son Legal Drama), starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin. CBS is not commenting beyond that, but I hear all three series are for fall.
True Lies, ordered as an off-cycle pilot, also had been rumored for a series order, likely for midseason. I hear negotiations between CBS and 20th Television continue, and the project is still very much alive.
Not going forward are CBS’ remaining drama pilot, Early Edition, a reimagining of the Kyle Chandler series which had been cooling off, as well as all of CBS’ comedy pilots/presentations. The network this year opted for all presentation orders to comedy projects to its own studio, CBS Studios, while the one comedy from an outside studio, Warner Bros. TV’s Rust Bell News, was a full pilot.
New Series On Broadcast Networks In 2022-23: Photo Gallery
I hear CBS brass were very happy with their crop of drama pilots this season, considered to be one of the strongest in years, while the group of comedy pilots did not produce any standouts.
With CBS also canceling three current comedy series — United States of Al, B Positive and How We Roll — the network will have the fewest half-hour series on the schedule in awhile. CBS five years ago trimmed down its two-hour Monday comedy block to one hour, more recently consisting of The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola. CBS may now do the same with the Thursday two-hour block.
I hear So Help Me Todd, which has comedic overtones, may join the lineup behind the 8 Pm comedy block, anchored by flagship Young Sheldon and possibly featuring breakout hit Ghosts.
2022 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
So Help Me Todd has been one of the Cinderella stories of the 2022 broadcast season. Taking a big blow early on when the female lead was recast, with Marcia Gay Harden replacing Geena Davis opposite Skylar Astin, the pilot hung in there in the middle of the pack and had a big finish with strong testing results, I hear.

The planned “Love, Simon” TV series is on the move.
The show was originally set to air on Disney Plus but will now launch on Hulu instead. In addition, it will now be titled “Love, Victor.” It focuses on Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School — the same high school as the movie — on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation.
The 10-episode first season will debut on Hulu in June, which is Pride Month. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Hulu has opened a writers’ room to begin fleshing out a potential second season. Sources also note that Disney felt many issues explored on the show, including alcohol use and sexual exploration, would not fit in with the family-friendly content on Disney Plus. Cimino will star as Victor, “a new student at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation,” according to the show’s logline. “When it all seems too much, he reaches out to Simon to help him navigate the ups and downs of high school.”
He joins the previously announced Ana Ortiz, who will star as Isabel, Victor’s mother. Robinson will produce and narrate the series. James Martinez, Isabella Ferreira, Mateo Fernandez, Johnny Sequoyah, Bebe Wood, George Sear, Anthony Turpel and Mason Gooding round out the ensemble cast.

After giving the world a glimpse into middle school life, it looks like Bo Burnham’s going to help to do the same for the whole family.
Deadline is reporting that Burnham has been tapped to write songs for the upcoming live-action “Sesame Street” movie, expected in theaters in early 2021. Anne Hathaway is set to star, with “Portlandia” and “Baskets” co-creator Jonathan Krisel directing.
Burnham had one of 2018’s breakout indie hits with his debut film “Eighth Grade,” which he wrote and directed. His script earned him an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, part of a handful of awards the film earned during last year’s circuit. Prior to “Eighth Grade,” Burnham was a breakout viral star, whose comedy songs helped propel him to international fame. His last special “Make Happy” debuted on Netflix in the summer of 2016.

Amy York Rubin (Gay Kid and Fat Chick) is set to direct the pilot and second episode of Dead to Me, Netflix’s half-hour dark comedy series starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, from writer Liz Feldman, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gloria Sanchez Prods. and CBS TV Studios.
Written by Feldman, Dead to Me, which has a 10-episode straight-to-series order, has been described as a comedic Big Little Lies. It is about a powerful friendship that blossoms between Jen (Applegate), a tightly wound widow, and Judy (Cardellini), a free spirit with a shocking secret.
Rubin is next set to direct Bo Burnham’s upcoming feature Gay Kid and Fat Chick for Paramount Pictures. Her other recent directing credits include Smilf for Showtime, Hulu’s Casual, AMC’s Dietland, ABC’s Fresh Off The Boat, TBS’ Tribeca and Wrecked, Freeform’s Grown-ish and Alone Together and I’m Sorry for TruTv.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Worldwide has just taken most international territories to Bo Burnham’s Sundance Film Festival indie feature Eighth Grade, which in the wake of a fantastic Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% certified is being primed for awards season by A24.
The Scott Rudin-Eli Bush-produced movie, which marks 27-year old comedian Burnham’s foray into feature film directing counts $13.5M at the domestic box office, and was one of the few fiction indie mainstays at the summer’s specialty box office which was dominated by documentary films. While awards and big box office are always wonderful to go hand in hand, Eighth Grade is a reminder of how prestige matters more in the awards race than ticket sales. The pic, which was shot over roughly 30 days, surpassed such Oscar-nominated Sundance faves as Fox Searchlight’s Beasts of the Southern Wild ($12.7M), another summer breakout from six years ago.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures, which has been gearing up production under new studio chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos after being left with pretty much a barren cupboard from the previous regime of the late Brad Grey and Rob Moore, has several projects in development with female directors. They have only one in production, but the town understands this is an inherited situation that new management is now working to turn around.
We’re told one of the mandates from Gianopulos is to hire more female directors onto projects, evidenced by its development slate both at Paramount and in its Paramount Players division. One of those new projects is the high-profile Nightlife, which Neal Moritz is producing with two strong female roles (see below).
Here is what’s on the studio slate to date:

Paramount Players is moving ahead with Bo Burnham’s teen comedy-drama “Gay Kid and Fat Chick,” hiring TV director Amy York Rubin to helm.
The project has been in development at Paramount since 2013, when it acquired Burnham’s script, which made the Black List of best unproduced screenplays that year. Burnham is also producing.
The story centers two high school outcasts, Maggie and Alex, who decide to bring justice to victims of torment and bullying by dressing up as “The Beaver” and “Gold Bitch,” and violently punishing whoever is accused of bullying their classmates. Maggie is the goalie of women’s field hockey team and Alex cheers for her as the school’s mascot, a beaver.
Paramount Players launched last June to ramp up production of movies derived from Viacom brands such as MTV and Nickelodeon. It’s developing an array of projects, including a big-screen adaptation of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?...

Exclusive: Amy York Rubin will direct Paramount Pictures’ Gay Kid and Fat Chick, a title that would raise eyebrows if it weren’t about two outsider teenagers who create costumed alter egos to get revenge on the students who have bullied them in school. The film was written and is being produced by Bo Burnham (The Big Sick) for Paramount Players, the division started up last summer inside Paramount Pictures that is devoted entirely to producing films derived from the Viacom flagship brands, including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Bet.
Over the past year or so, Rubin has been steadily working as a director, helming many episodes for various TV shows, including episodes of Casual(Hulu), Smilf (Showtime), The Mick (Fox), Fresh Off The Boat (ABC), Grown-ish and Alone Together (both Freeform titles), I’m Sorry (TruTV) and upcoming episodes of Dietlan (AMC), Tribeca and Wrecked (both for TBS).
Burnham is multi-talented.

Each year, when “Casual” executive producers Zander Lehmann and Helen Estabrook brainstorm who should direct the new season, it starts with two very simple requirements:
“We sit down and make our list of who we most want to work with, and which good indie movies we’ve seen lately,” said Lehmann, who created the Hulu comedy.
“We’ve always really wanted to match the indie filmmaking aesthetic and perspective with a television show, so a lot of it comes from us sitting down and thinking about, ‘Who are the directors working in this space that we’re really excited about?’” Estabrook said.

You know you’re a TV nerd when your most anticipated awards announcements are the Writers Guild Awards. TV is a writer’s medium. Every TV fan awaits the Emmys, and some even bother to care about the Golden Globes, but most don’t know the major Guilds give out statues to television producers.
Nerdier still, I’m most interested in the nominees almost nobody writes about: web original short form comedies and dramas.
So while you probably could not imagine my disappointment when the WGA released their nominees for original short-form new media this year,...

Over the past year-and-a-half, IFC has used its digital Comedy Crib destination to distribute a varied selection of independently-minded comedies for streaming audiences. Now, Comedy Crib is coming to TV, and some of its shows will have a chance to air on IFC. The cable channel used its yearly upfront presentation to introduce a weekly, half-hour block of late-night programming sourced from Comedy Crib.
Since its launch, Comedy Crib has featured the talented partners of major comedy organizations like Ucb Comedy and Above Average, and on the platform’s late-night TV block, those stand-up and sketch performers will have yet another chance to shine. Their work will be joined by several of Comedy Crib’s original series, which will also make the jump to terrestrial broadcasts.
One of the first shows that will air during the Comedy Crib TV block is Boxed In, a newly-launched web series from creator Amy York Rubin.

Since its launch in November 2014, IFC’s Comedy Crib has served as a home for high-quality web series, some of which have caught our attention. Now, Comedy Crib has announced the shows that will make up its fall slate, and it has assembled a strong lineup. Leading off is Suburban Sons, a series produced by Above Average that stars Lamorne Morris of New Girl fame.
In Suburban Sons, Morris plays one of four dads who together make up a gang of suburban gangsters. However, instead of running a dangerous criminal syndicate, the Suburban Sons spend their time making sure local lawns are well-maintained. In the premiere episode, this process involves torturing a resistant neighbor by over-cooking hamburgers and sharing Breaking Bad spoilers.
