Jordan Peele is gearing up to share a new anthology celebrating Black horror. Entitled Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror, the collection is due out on October 3rd via Random House.
Peele — who has earned quite a bit of acclaim in recent years for creating top-notch psychological horror films, like Get Out, Us, and Nope — curated Out There Screaming, handpicking all-new short horror stories by 19 Black authors. He also wrote the foreword for the 400-page collection. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Promising stories that “prey on everything we think we know about our world… and redefine what it means to be afraid,” Out There Screaming is poised to be an inventive entry in the canon of horror fiction. If the sample excerpt — a snippet of N. K. Jemisin’s “Reckless Eyeballing,” currently available to read on the book’s Amazon page — is any indication, fans can expect to dive...

Following the successful run of his Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” Jordan Peele made a well-received pivot to the psychological horror genre, starting with his 2017 feature “Get Out” starring Daniel Kaluuya followed by 2019’s “Us” with and 2022’s “Nope.” His current catalog of thrillers center on themes of Blackness in America, pitting the sometimes horrifying reality of these experiences against the classic supernatural tropes of scary movies.
Now, the actor, writer and director is releasing a new book, “Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror,” a hard-cover curation of some of the best horror stories from 19 Black writers. Peele edited the anthology and wrote the foreword for the book, which is already a No. 1 new-release on Amazon.

From Beyoncé’s Black Is King and the Hulu adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Kindred to the Black Panther films, Black science fiction — what scholars have coined Black Speculative Thought or Afrofuturism — has seen a steady rise over the past few decades. The latest entry, Netflix’s new animated series My Dad the Bounty Hunter, now streaming, brings outer space and Black familyhood to the forefront, staying true to the genre’s core mission: telling relatable and futuristic stories that center Black characters while expanding the audience’s imagination.

Seven years before its Jan. 23 world premiere in Park City — the first-time that a homegrown Nigerian feature has scored a coveted slot in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at Sundance — C.J. Obasi’s “Mami Wata” began with a vision.
The director was sitting on a West African beach, in between projects and contemplating his next move. Suddenly, an apparition came to him: A mermaid standing on the ocean’s shore, beckoning to a mysterious young woman behind him.
“It was really vivid,” Obasi says. “It was in black and white. In the vision, the goddess’ eyes are red, but also very soft. There was a kindness to her eyes. When I came to, I said, Ok, so my next movie is ‘Mami Wata.’”
What followed was a personal and professional journey to understand that moment on the beach, and to breathe life into a movie about the titular mermaid-deity of West African folklore.

When I talked to Cory Doctorow during TorCon back in June, the author spoke about speculative fiction as “a sort of diagnostic tool,” comparing storytelling to the scientific process a doctor goes through when using a nasal swab to diagnose an illness.
“When you want to solve something, you often simplify it,” said Doctorow, “like when the doctor sticks a swab up your nose, sticks it into a petri dish, and looks at it later. She’s not trying to build an accurate 1:1 scale model of your body, because it’s too complicated. She wants to build a little world in a jar in which one fact about your body is the whole world, whatever that gunk is that’s growing in your nasal tract.”

Fantasy tends to be a genre of dead mothers and wicked stepmothers. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise since modern stories often draw on generations of fairy tales and retellings with absent moms. Yet when the mothers are part of the story, they frequently function solely in their parental role, without an indication of their own personhood beyond that. So for Mother’s Day, I wanted to create a list of some of science fiction and fantasy’s (Sff) amazing moms. We may not get to see the lives of these moms on screen or on the page, but we’ve got the clues to know that they are their own people—and that makes them realer mothers.

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. When South African writer-director Gareth Crocker was developing “Shadow,” a series about an ex-cop with superpowers who fights crime in Johannesburg’s underworld, he took the unusual and risky approach of bypassing local broadcasters to get the project made.
The show’s executive producers wanted to keep the rights to a series they thought had global potential. “We simply produced and financed the show ourselves before taking it to the market,” Crocker says, adding that the eight-part series was made on an “extremely modest budget” in a country where an hour-long episode costs around $100,000.
The gamble paid off when Netflix swooped in to acquire the program, which rolled out in 190 countries on March 8 — the widest release of an African dramatic series to date.
If TV’s golden age has turned everything from Mexican drug running to British royal intrigue into required viewing, African stories have been noticeably absent from the conversation.

Exclusive: Amazon Prime Video is developing Wild Seed, a drama series based on the first book in Octavia E. Butler’s acclaimed Patternist sci-fi series, from Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions.
Co-written by award-winning sci-fi novelist Nnedi Okorafor and Rafiki filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu who is set to direct, Wild Seed is a love (and hate) story of two African immortals who travel the ages from pre-Colonial West Africa to the far, far future. Doro, a killer who uses his power to breed people like livestock, encounters Anyanwu, a healer who forces him to reassess his millennia of cruel behavior: for centuries, their personal battles change the course of our world as they struggle against the backdrop of time — master vs slave, man vs woman, killer vs healer.

The pressure is on for George R.R. Martin to finish his next book in A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter, and we have no idea when he’s going to finish it. This has been a long a difficult writing process for Martin and in a recent interview with The Guardian, he opens up and explains why finishing the book has been a struggle for him:
“I’ve been struggling with it for a few years. The Winds of Winter is not so much a novel as a dozen novels, each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players and antagonists and allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together in an extremely complex fashion. So it’s very, very challenging. Fire and Blood by contrast was very simple. Not that it’s easy, it still took me years to put together,...

For those of you who don’t know, Marvel Comics has given the Black Panther character Shuri her own ongoing series. The first issue of Shuri has been released and it’s leading to a big change with Black Panther.
The comic is setting her up to take on the mantle of Black Panther because with the absence of T’Challa, the women of Wakanda believe the country needs a Black Panther to show that they are strong.
In the story, Shuri is called to a traditional secret of meeting of Wakanda women called the Elephant's Trunk. With Wakanda in trouble, Shuri's mother Queen Ramonda felt she needed to gather together the group again because T'Challa has been missing for a couple weeks.
Despite the fact that he isn't the ruler of Wakanda anymore because Wakanda is a constitutional monarchy now, they still need a Black Panther to represent and protect them.

Black Panther was pretty damn excellent, with Chadwick Boseman serving up a hero quite different to what we normally expect from the McU. And that’s despite the fact that he was constantly in danger of having the scene stolen out from under him by the excellent supporting cast of characters, be it Daniel Kaluuya’s W’Kabi, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger or, the best of all, Letitia Wright’s super-smart, ass-kicking princess Shuri.
In fact, Shuri’s now so popular there are plausible rumors that she could be stepping into the Black Panther role permanently at some point in the future. There’s even a movement to get her declared an official Disney Princess alongside Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine and the rest. Clearly sensing the character’s growing popularity, then, Marvel has commissioned a limited solo series for her that follows the timeline set...
