In the 15 years between the 1981 release of the Gun Club’s first album and their frontman’s death in 1996, the bleached-blond rock & roll typhoon known as Jeffrey Lee Pierce touched the lives of Nick Cave, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, Lydia Lunch, and countless others. His music could be invigorating and/or mysterious, sometimes at the same time. With the Gun Club and as a solo artist (sometimes billing himself cheekily as Ramblin’ Jeffrey Lee), he recorded revved-up punk, Delta-style blues, brooding folk,...

“A Prince” won the Sacd Prize from France’s Writers’ Guild for the best French-language film at Directors’ Fortnight.
Represented in international markets by Andolfi, “A Prince” follows a horticultural student, Pierre-Joseph, whose sexual encounters with his botany teacher and mentors lead to a unique hybrid tale of science, sex and meditation.
“We’re thrilled to be handling ‘A Prince,’ Creton’s work is such a rarified vision that fits so well with the Strand Releasing brand, we look forward to taking this out to some of the top festivals across North America,” said Marcus Hu at Strand Releasing.
The deal was done between Jon Gerrans and producer Arnaud Dommerc on behalf of production company Andolfi. Strand previously worked on Dommerc’s previous film, “Felicité,” directed by Alain Gomis,...

In the second prize announcement by a Directors’ Fortnight partner, “A Prince,” the fifth feature from singular French auteur Pierre Creton, has won the Sacd Prize, awarded by France’s Writers’ Guild for the best French-language movie in the section.

Attending The Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans last year was one of my favorite horror experiences of the decade thus far, and Daily Dead is proud to return as one of the sponsors for this year's festival, taking place March 30th–April 2nd!
I couldn't wait to see what Overlook had in store for attendees this year, but I was not prepared for how spellbinding this year's lineup would be. Moroccan-born French director Yasmine Benkiran, whose feature debut “Queens” opened at Venice and is playing at the Marrakech Film Festival, is now developing two ambitious features.
“Queens,” which was developed at the Atlas Workshops, the industry sidebar running alongside the Marrakech Film Festival, is a rare Moroccan film weaving adventure and genre with strong female protagonists.
Benkiran is set to continue exploring complex female characters which her upcoming projects, including a spy movie titled “Elles ont brillé sur le Nil” (“They Shined on the Nile”). The project, which has received support from the Ile de France region, is set in 1950’s Cairo, Egypt. The story revolves around Zeyna, a makeup artist who is investigating the mysterious death of Amal El Abrach, a famous Syrian-born actress known as Asmahan.

Gregoire Melin’s Kinology, the banner behind “Annette,” has boarded “Queens,” Yasmine Benkiran’s feature debut, which will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The uplifting Moroccan movie will unspool on closing night of Critics Week. Kinology represents the film in international markets.
The sprawling, colorful adventure film opens in Casablanca, where a trio of rebellious female outlaws – a mother, her daughter and a young girl – drive through the Atlas desert to reach the Atlantic coast with local police forces on their trail.
Benkiran said her film “celebrates freedom and the power of imagination,” as well as conveying the need for women to free themselves from patriarchal traditions in contemporary Moroccan society.
The up-and-coming French-Moroccan director said she aspired to make a film with depth that blended genre with local mythology to tell this story.

A new video for the track, by director Jules Guerin, pairs the duo’s otherworldly racket with images of deserts and empty buildings all in black and white. Swirls of light distort each image.

Jim Jarmusch hasn’t shared any news about his next film project, but the writer-director of 2016’s “Paterson” recently released some new original music from his rock band, Sqürl. The group’s fourth mini-album, “Ep #260,” features five songs, only one of which includes vocals – “Gates of Ishtar.” The heavily instrumental music sounds a lot like a film score, which makes sense considering Sqürl first came together to compose the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s 2009 crime-drama “The Limits of Control.” The band’s first name was Bad Rabbit.

From Guardians Of The Galaxy to Godzilla, and Noah to Paddington, our pick of 2014's finest film soundtracks and scores.
After Gravity blew your eardrums out of the airlock in 2013 with its seamless mix of sound effects and music, it was hard to imagine a film wowing just as much the year after, but 2014 was a year in which movie soundtracks became, if anything, even more intricate, from films about the nature of being a musician to those that replicated the noise of human existence for alien senses.
Before 2014 becomes a distant ringing in the ears, here are the top 14 movie soundtracks of the year.
1. Under the Skin (Mica Levi)
Once you've heard Mica Levi's soundtrack to Under the Skin, everything else sounds both disappointing and even more exciting. I say 'soundtrack' because, like the best movies, Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi understands that sound and music are two halves of the same hastily-conceived metaphor.

I’m not sure what’s worse, sparkling vampires or hipster vampires. Alright, totally kidding, because there’s not a single Twilight comparison throughout Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, and dammit if Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston aren’t the coolest vampires this side of Brooklyn. I mean, Hiddleston’s character Adam wears sunglasses at night, writes music he never wants heard, and collects vintage guitars no one will ever see – he’s about one patch of ill-advised facial hair and a fedora away from being the King of all who couldn’t care less.
Honestly, what did you expect from a Jarmusch film about vampires? Every horrific aspect is so underplayed, akin to an indie rock band who appear to have begrudgingly taken the stage, but just like how lethargic rockers amass monster crowds by seemingly ignoring them, that’s how Swinton and Hiddleston charm their way into our hearts.

Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are oddly endearing as centuries-old lovers in Jim Jarmusch's vampire movie
Us indie pioneer Jim Jarmusch has been pursuing his laconic strain of cinematic hipsterism for 30 years now, so long that he seems as ageless as the blood-sipping characters in his latest film. You thought there was nothing new to add to the vampire genre? So, apparently, did Jarmusch, which is why Only Lovers Left Alive luxuriates in a curious end-of-an-era melancholy, as if he'd set out at once to make the last ever vampire movie and cinema's last ever love story.
The lovers in question are reclusive rock musician Adam (Tom Hiddleston, exuding fastidiously weary cool) and Eve (Tilda Swinton, pallid and otherworldly – I swear, you'd barely recognise her). Centuries old, the couple are married and still deeply in love though living apart: she in Tangier, he in a Detroit seemingly reverting to primeval jungle.

While the rest of his cohort have fallen by the wayside or been absorbed into the Hollywood system, the film-maker has stayed weird, as his new movie of erudite vampire love reveals
The word "hipster" invariably crops up in discussions about American film-maker Jim Jarmusch, not least because he looks the part. He is tall, lean, often wears shades and has a famous shock of hair that started turning silvery grey in his teens; his basso drawl completes the uncanny resemblance to a certain Hollywood great, which inspired Jarmusch to found a jokey secret society, The Sons of Lee Marvin.
Jarmusch is without a doubt the most rock'n'roll of film-makers – although he obliges you to define the term. He has worked with a lot of musicians, either as composers or as actors – Neil Young, Tom Waits, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, hip-hop producer RZA.
