- El Anatsui was born in 1944 in Anyako, Ghana.
- He is a Ghanaian sculptor, considered to be one of Africa's most influential artists.
- He studied at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi, Ghana. The classes were dominated by Western art, but he decided to utilize Ghanaian culture, using local materials and symbols. He has worked with wooden market trays, clay pots, and metal cassava graters.
- Several of his best known creations, which have been displayed in galleries and museums across the world, are large tapestry-like works made with bottle tops, and deal with themes such as power, migration and the environment.
- At the time I went to art school, any parent would think that his child is crazy if he chose, of all disciplines, of all professions, to do art because there wasn't anything like a role model or a famous artist in the area that I grew up in.
