"Some of the most exciting experiences of my life have all happened because I was in a costume." Dive into the world of cosplay. Abramorama has debuted a trailer for Cosplay Universe, a cosplay documentary now set to finally open in July this summer. This originally premiered way back in 2018 at the Culver City Film Festival, but has never been released since then. It was made so long ago they actually got a Stan Lee interview before he passed away in 2018. Cosplay Universe gives viewers a window into the ever evolving world of cosplay. What started in Japan as a subculture defined by a communal love of anime, has become a worldwide phenomenon. The film captures the magical personal transformation that occurs which allows cosplayers to step outside themselves and become their own hero. With appearances by comic book legend Stan Lee, cosplay superstars Yaya Han and Jessica Nigri, and many more.

It wasn’t very long ago that I expressed my gratitude to the folks behind Michigan Comic Con for allowing geeks in my home state to partake in yet another sizable event geared toward those of our persuasion. And after being one among thousands to file into Cobo Arena this past weekend, I can say that, perhaps like those of you reading this, I’d made memories to last a lifetime.
Aside from running into many friends I’ve made over the years frequenting the convention scene, I, of course, made a few new ones along the way. Not only that, but the late addition of Kevin Conroy to the guest list was something that was much appreciated, for I’ve yet to see him at a show in this area. Needless to say, the man whom many regard as being the definitive voice of Batman was easily among the...

Being someone who’s covered conventions of varying sizes around southeast Michigan for the past five years, I’ve been clamoring for another big event aimed at the comic book crowd to come to Detroit. Like many of you, I feel that just one hasn’t been enough, and though the small and mid-sized shows are certainly lots of fun, there’s just nothing like a sprawling showroom floor populated by vendors, writers, artists and healthy amount of celebrities.
Well, soon enough, that’s going to change once the first ever Michigan Comic Con arrives in downtown Detroit this August, which is sure to satisfy our geeky needs for the summertime. And seeing as how it’s brought to us by the same folks behind Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Indiana and Atlanta Comic Cons, I think it’s safe to say we’re all in for a weekend to remember.

Marvel Comics has released a new series of variant cosplay comic covers featuring cosplayers dressed up as their favorite superhero characters. Some of those characters include fan favorites such as Star-Lord, Silk, Gwenpool, The Punisher, Scarlet Witch, Dazzler, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Squirrel Girl, and more. Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor-in-Chief, had this to say about the cosplay variant covers:
“The response to our first set of Cosplay Variants was so incredible, we simply had to do a second wave. And, of course, we were able to find a great crop of cosplayers with some truly fantastic costumes. We’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on an ever-growing community that continues to show love for us and our characters.”
You can check out the thirteen covers that have been released so far below. To see the last set of cosplay covers that were released, click here.

This week McCall’s introduced three new patterns in their Cosplay by McCall’s series. Did you even know they had a series for Cosplayers? Well, they do. It’s been around since last fall – and it was developed after talking to actual cosplayers about their needs, wants, etc. Yaya Han even has her own line. Priced from $17.95 to $19.95 (with some really great sales going on now for much much less), the patterns can be reused for different cosplays and seem pretty easy with their step by step instructions and larger outer envelopes full of additional info, sewing tips, line drawings and photo references. There’s also a blog with more ideas on the cosplay.mccall.com site.
The new patterns are Flight, Trenched & Cloak X and in this episode, we give some suggestions of what we’d make with them, plus what patterns we love from the other cosplay collections on the site.

Beat Down Boogie sent over a spectacular cosplay music video that they did for Anime Weekend Atlanta 2014. As you might expect from a convention like this, the cosplayers are sporting some epically cool costumes. Some of the highlights include Legend Of Zelda, League Of Legends (including Yaya Han as Arcade Miss Fortune), Final Fantasy, Gangsta Sailor Scouts, and many more.

I cannot tell a lie, folks — the cool Sunday evening air of Seattle felt particularly good upon my return from San Diego Comic-Con. Sure, the Con was fun. It always is. But spending four days pretending to be the Millennium Falcon navigating an asteroid field can be draining — and this year’s swarm of slow-moving convention-goers seemed particularly thick, leaving less room to maneuver.
Comic-Con 2014 was something of a paradox: it felt bigger while seeming to offer fewer of the charms that made past Comic-Cons special. The entertainment industry’s presence felt more pervasive, and panels for the biggest TV series were packed. To echo the observation made in a previous post by my colleague Michelle Nelson, after Thursday night, it became tougher to find extraordinary cosplayers on the floor that weren’t sponsored or professionals such as Yaya Han.

This collection of Catwoman cosplay is most time intensive "Best of Cosplay" to date. Normally a collection will start off with 40-60 photos, and that is pared down to about 25-30. Even with a very high bar set, I ended up curating over 120 photos, with the final collection having 35 elite. Each cosplay artist has many great photos cut to present the largest cast and variety of cosplay.
If you've got good cosplay or think I missed something, send it our way.

The Fantastic Four's first lady also happens to be one of the fiercest and most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe. Aside from having the patience of Job when dealing with Johnny's slightly inflated sense of self, Reed's constant state of aloofness, and Ben's, well, constant clobbering, she also possesses an impressive power set that sometimes gets overlooked when compiling our "who's more powerful" top ten lists. In honor of all this, we've compiled some of the most fantastic (sorry, but just had to) Invisible Woman cosplay around, and if you like what you see, make sure to show all the hard working cosplayers and photographers that brought it to you some love.

Before we enjoy Jessica's cospaly, I wanted to bring to your attention something that happened on an episode of SyFy‘s Heroes of Cosplay. A "reality" show that follows stars of the cosplay community from one comic book convention to the next as the cosplayers quickly create elaborate costumes for each event. Sadly, the show is light on reality, and heavy on the manufactured drama. In the second episode, Yaya Han, who is a judge on the show and a world class cosplayer, said, "I think Jessica (Nigri) and I approach cosplay from different angles. For me it's all about the craftsmanship, really paying a lot of attention to detail. The content that Jessica Nigri puts out really displays cosplay in the wrong light. She doesn't ever produce anything that showcases anything beyond the sex appeal." Sounds like a juicy catfight in the making, right? Wrong! Both, Jessica and Yaya,...

In Hollywood, celebrities dress up all the time, and gossip mags are often comparing the relative fashion sense of this actor or that. But in the world of comic books and sci-fi/fantasy, fashion celebrities not only wear spectacular outfits -- they also make them.
Airing Tuesdays, Syfy's "Heroes of Cosplay" (originally announced as "Cosworld") dives into the subculture of fans who handcraft costumes based on their favorite characters from sci-fi movies, video games, anime and more. And at conventions around the nation and the world, they walk their creations onstage to win glory and cash prizes.
Filmed in part at MegaCon in Orlando, Fla. -- a convention famed for its costuming excellence -- "Heroes of Cosplay" follows several cosplay enthusiasts as they put it all on the line in design, manufacture and showmanship.
They include:
Yaya Han - An acknowledged expert in cosplay, the Atlanta-based Han also often serves as a judge at contests.
