Melbourne, July 21 (Ians) Canada were held to a 0-0 draw against Nigeria in their Group B opener at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, here on Friday.
Canada started the stronger of the two sides, but the reigning Olympic champion failed to break the deadlock. Nigeria then made some tactical adjustments, leading to several powerful shots before the break.
Canada was awarded a penalty in the 50th minute, but 40-year-old forward Christine Sinclair’s effort was saved by Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Both teams adopted a more assertive and aggressive approach afterwards, but failed to find the back of the net, a Xinhua report said.
Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun was sent off for a reckless tackle in the eighth minute of stoppage time, but Canada couldn’t capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Apple, Netflix, HBO and The Hollywood Reporter are among the nominees for the 27th annual Webby Awards, the awards show that seeks to recognize top online content.
This year, the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences received almost 14,000 submissions coming from 70 different countries. Of the organizations nominated, Apple led the pack with a total of 22 nods, followed by MTV with 15, National Geographic and Netflix with 14 each, Audible with 13 and CNN, HBO and The Washington Post with 12 apiece.
THR received a nomination in the diversity, equity and inclusion social video for the February 2022 Blackfamous roundtable featuring Loretta Devine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Larenz Tate and Lynn Whitfield and moderated by THR editorial director Nekesa Mumbi Moody.

Following this week’s historic all-Canadian special, Stronger Together, Tous Ensemble, it was announced today that more than $6 million has been raised to date to provide immediate support to Food Banks Canada during the Covid-19 pandemic.
