Juniper TV CEO Samir Shah is set to become the new chair of the BBC, the U.K.’s culture secretary Lucy Frazer said today.
Shah, who has worked in broadcasting for more than 40 years, will appear before the Culture, Media and Sport committee in the U.K. for what’s known as “pre-appointment scrutiny” before officially taking up the role, which is worth £160,000 a year.
The BBC is one of the U.K.’s public service broadcasters and is also publicly owned, effectively held in trust by the government for the U.K. public. Convention dictates that the candidate for chair is “recommended” to King Charles II and the Lord President of the Council (currently Penny Mordaunt) by the secretary of state for culture (currently Lucy Frazer) and the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, following a hearing with the Cms committee and subsequent report.

Incoming British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised to unite the country “not with words but with actions” and said “mistakes were made” during the disastrous 44-day reign of his now-predecessor Liz Truss.
In the past hour, the former Chancellor-now-pm has headed to Buckingham Palace where he was officially sworn in by King Charles III, following an incredibly dramatic chain of events after he initially lost the Conservative Party leadership vote to Truss over the summer. Truss resigned in disgrace last week following a failed economic plan that completely spooked the markets.
Speaking outside his new 10 Downing Street home today, Sunak said he will unite the country “not with words but with actions,” adding that he “has work to do to restore trust after all that has happened.” Truss’ resignation came just three months after Boris Johnson was also forced to resign over Partygate and a series of scandals.

Asim Chaudhry has spoken out against the Tories and Rishi Sunak in an exclusive interview with The Independent.
Reacting to the news of Sunak becoming the UK’s third prime minister in three months on Monday (24 October), the People Just Do Nothing star said that the former chancellor “won by default because no one else was competent”.
Sunak’s triumph was announced after Boris Johnson quit the Tory leadership race on Sunday night (23 October) and Penny Mordaunt dropped out minutes before the deadline to go on the ballot on Monday.
Speaking about why he doesn’t believe that the country’s first Asian prime minister represents him, Chaudhry said: “When Obama became president it was a historic moment because people around the world believed anything was possible. The difference here is that Obama was unashamedly himself and proud of his culture, championed it, represented his people.

Asim Chaudhry has backed The Independent’s campaign for a general election.
The People Just Do Nothing actor, who has been a vocal critic of the Tories in recent months, told The Independent: “General election now! Yes!”
Reacting to news of Rishi Sunak becoming the UK’s third prime minister in three months, he said: “I don’t think Rishi would do well in a general election.
“I wasn’t shocked when I heard that Lbc interview where a racist man was claiming that ‘Rishi isn’t even British!’
“In some ways I pity Rishi, he will never be Asian enough for the average Asian person and he’ll never be ‘British’ enough for the right-wing bigots.”
Almost 400,000 people have signed The Independent’s campaign petition for a general election.

A BBC News presenter has been taken off air for a potential impartiality breach after asking “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?” on a political program following Boris Johnson’s decision to pull out of the race to be Prime Minister.
Martine Croxall was presenting Sunday night’s BBC News edition of The Papers, in which journalists review the day’s newspapers, when she made the comments at the start of the program, around 90 minutes after Johnson had gone public with his decision.
“Well this is all very exciting, isn’t it?,” said Croxall. “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?”
She later remarked: “I’m probably breaking some terrible impartiality rule by giggling.”
The BBC said it is “urgently reviewing for a potential breach of its impartiality” and Deadline understands Croxall has been taken off air by BBC News while the matter is investigated. The BBC has strict...

Comedians Ricky Gervais, Nish Kumar and David Baddiel are among the celebrities to lead reactions to Liz Truss’s resignation after just six weeks as prime minister.
In a speech outside Downing Street on Thursday 20 October, Truss announced that her replacement would be found within the next week, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.
The politician’s resignation came after 15 Tory MPs publicly called for her to step down, following a chaotic six weeks that included a disastrous mini-budget, the firing of former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and the resignation of former home secretary Suella Braverman.
Reacting to the news, Gervais shared a picture of himself making a speech outside No 10, with the caption: “And it wouldn’t even be in the top 10 weirdest news stories of the year.”
Piers Morgan tweeted: “What an absolute shambles.”

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has ferociously condemned the Tory government, following Liz Truss’s resignation after just six weeks as prime minister.
On Thursday 20 October, Truss resigned as leader, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.
Truss’s resignation came after 15 Tory MPs publicly called for her to step down, following six weeks that included a mini-budget that caused the pound’s value to plummet, the firing of former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and the resignation of former home secretary Suella Braverman just yesterday (19 October).
The new prime minister will be announced in the next week.
Reacting to the news, Yorke tweeted: “Bring down this UK government, they do not speak for us, right the f*** now… they have no authority, no mandate, no clue, cats in a bag tearing themselves to pieces while the country suffers in extreme distress. Enough of this s***. Shame on them.”

Charles III has officially been proclaimed the King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms during a meeting of the Accession Council in London on Saturday morning. It is the first time in history the ceremony has ever been televised.
U.K. networks including BBC, ITV and Sky broadcast the ceremony live at 10Am local time as did U.S. networks including NBC, where Savannah Guthrie was anchoring for an early morning special of the “Today Show.”
Broadcasting the Accession Council ceremony is significant and, according to historian Vernon Bogdnaor “a sign of the times that the monarchy has to adapt to a more open and less deferential society,” as he told BBC News.
When Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne in 1952 there was not even a discussion that the ceremony should be televised while a debate then ensued over broadcasting her coronation the following year. In the event,...

With the race to replace Boris Johnson as next UK Prime Minister now down to the final two, bosses at BBC New Broadcasting House and Channel 4 Horseferry Road will be examining former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss’s record on public broadcasting in minute detail.
Both broadcasters took a battering from Johnson’s firebrand Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, via a recently announced review into the future of the BBC licence fee and, more existentially, legislation to privatize Channel 4. The pubcasters will now be hoping these drastic moves can be reversed.
Of concern to the BBC, however, Politico reported last week that Sunak has said in private that he would be willing to scrap the £159 (190) per year annual licence fee and look to alternative funding models when the BBC Charter expires in 2027. BBC bosses have said they are open to new models and are due to set...

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss have made it to the final two in the race to replace Boris Johnson and become the next UK Prime Minister.
Sunak won the run-off comfortably, picking up nominations from 137 MPs, while Truss dramatically overtook second-placed Penny Mordaunt at the final hurdle to secure 113 nominations. Mordaunt took 105 noms.
Starting Monday, the pair will face off in a serious of debates and hustings over the summer in a bid to win a majority vote from the Conservatives’ 200,000 party members, with the winner set to be announced September 5, at which point Johnson will officially step down.
Although Sunak was comfortably ahead of Truss with MPs, bookmakers and polls have frequently placed both Truss and Mordaunt as likely winners against Sunak with Conservative members. The BBC will host a Conservative Party Leader debate on Monday with the remaining two candidates to replace Boris Johnson, as the final four commit to taking part in the wake of tonight’s Sky News cancelation. A second one-on-one interview will be conducted by Nick Robinson with each of the candidates individually.
Sophie Raworth, who has been standing in for Andrew Marr on Sunday mornings, will present the debate, which will be between two of former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt or Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch.
The BBC stressed that all four have committed after frontrunners Sunak and Truss pulled out of tonight’s Sky debate, leading to its cancellation. Similar debates have taken place on ITV and Channel 4 in the past few days.

In the past few minutes, Sky has updated to say that it can not proceed with the debate without Sunak, the former Chancellor, and Truss, the Foreign Secretary, taking part.

Three of Holland’s most decorated players have announced they will take part in Soccer Aid for Unicef this summer.
Patrick Kluivert will make his debut for the Soccer Aid World XI, with Jaap Stam returning at the heart of the defence in front of goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar who has also starred previously.
The Dutch triumvirate – two of which, Stam and van der Sar, enjoyed successful club careers with Manchester United at Old Trafford – will team up with compatriot Clarence Seedorf who has already announced that he too will play for the Soccer Aid World XI.
An imposing central defender, Jaap Stam won a range of trophies with some of Europe’s top clubs across a 15-year career. Included in this was a three-year stay at Manchester United, where he is remembered fondly as part of the ’99 treble-winning side.
Edwin van der Sar was one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation.

Where some see disaster, others see victory … No, not the fraught events of 1940 as depicted in Christopher Nolan’s war epic, but the right’s battle against Europe. Has cinema become a willing ally?
You can’t blame Christopher Nolan for Brexit. The director was halfway through making Dunkirk, his new war epic, when the EU referendum took place last June. But if the leave campaign had wanted to make a rousing propaganda movie to stir the nation, it couldn’t have picked a better subject matter. Dunkirk has got it all: Britain standing alone against the world, our manufacturing superiority prevailing, the nation coming together – all in a literal effort to get out of Europe. If he had got the film together a little earlier, perhaps Nigel Farage wouldn’t have needed to cite Independence Day in his morning-after victory speech.
The Dunkirk analogy has already been trotted out by leave campaigners,...
