It may be called Pelé: Birth of a Legend, but Jeff and Michael Zimbalist‘s film is really about Ginga soccer and Brazil at risk of losing its soul. The climax depicts the 1958 World Cup with the country’s unexpected run to the final on the back of a seventeen year-old hobbled by a sprained knee, but it’s not his goal scoring that inspires confidence. His ability to run around the pitch in complete ignorance of the Europeans’ formation game lights a fire that burns deeper than technique. Vicente Feola (Vincent D’Onofrio trying a Portuguese accent) was hired to rebrand the team after a debilitating loss in 1950 and poor sportsmanship in 1954 by invoking that European way, but Pelé (Kevin de Paula) refused to forget his identity.
Ginga goes back to the African slave heritage of Brazil’s black community — explained as a fighting style and spirituality all but outlawed outside the soccer field.

If I'm not mistaken, my introduction to soccer (or football) legend Pele was the 1987 film Hotshot. Like any ten-year-old I wanted to run out and do bicycle kicks, but the same year North Shore came out and I wanted to run off and be a surfer. Now Pele's life is getting a feature film treatment and with production underway, Seine Pictures sent over the above first look picture at the film and Leonardo Lima Carvalho as Pele (or Dico as he was known in his younger years), playing with a "football" made of socks in the alleys of Bauru where he grew up. The film is directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist and stars Kevin de Paula as Pele, Diego Boneta, Colm Meaney and Seu Jorge with Vincent D'Onofrio and Rodrigo Santoro in final negotiations to join the cast. Even if you don't know your yellow cards from your free kicks, you likely know the name Pele (unless you're Colin Firth's Portuguese love interest in "Love Actually"). The Brazilian soccer legend is still regarded as one of the best to ever hit the pitch, and still remains an ambassador for the sport, so it's no surprise a biopic is on the way. And today brings the first look at the movie and the actor Leonardo Lima Carvalho who plays the footie phenom from ages 10-13. The film is now in production with Michael Zimbalist and Jeff Zimbalist writing and directing. More details on the movie below:PELÉ tells the miraculous story of the legendary soccer player’s rise to glory from a young boy to the 17 year old player who scored the winning goal in Brazil’s first ever World Cup victory in 1958. From a life full of...
