First shots often sum up much of the drama ahead. Bowing June 12 on Orange TV in Spain, “The Head’” a signature series of The Mediapro Studio, is no exception.
Featuring among key cast Alvaro Morte, “La Casa de Papel’s” Professor, and Japanese pop idol Tomohisa Yamashita, written by Alex and David Pastor and directed by Jorge Dorado, the six-part South Pole survival thriller kicks off with a sustained aerial shot swooping over cruelly barren Antarctic expanses, then down to a small but raucous crowd partying outside the Polaris VI Scientific Research Station.
Still the same apparent shot, it shimmies past Morte – who plays the Station’s belligerent cook and is gamely serving hamburgers – then morphs seamlessly into the subjective Pov of Johan (Alexandre Willaume), the Station’s second-in-command, as he nonchalantly grabs a bottle of wine and fair sprints into the Station.

*Warning: Spoilers for episodes 1-8 of Gangs of London to follow*
“I received the episodes and I read six first and I was like, ‘Oh, I understand why Gareth wants me to do that,’” laughs Xavier Gens talking to us via Zoom from lockdown in Paris. The French director took charge of ‘block four’ of epic crime drama Gangs of London, which sees the decline and fall of the Wallace and Dumani clans leading up to the dramatic end of season finale.
Episode six might as well be dubbed ‘the torture episode’. After the countryside siege that dominated Gareth Evans’ episode five – a standalone that acts as a pivot point for the series but exists in the timeline directly after episode two but before episodes three and four, six takes us back into the linear narrative armed with new information.

On Sept. 13, the cast and crew of Mediapro’s upcoming dramatic thriller “The Head” gathered at a swanky Santa Cruz de Tenerife hotel to kick off promotional duties for this English-language series, which will wrap shooting later this month.
It was day 50 of production, and the cast had been working late, rushing to get every last shot before heading off to Iceland for one last week. Having only wrapped the previous night’s shoot less than 10 hours prior, all were in high spirits for that morning’s round of junkets with the Spanish, Japanese and English-language press, and for the set visit that then followed.
Variety was on-hand for the day’s events, and can offer the following take-aways from the visit.
Limited Series Appeal
The six-episode limited series took shape when Ran Tellem, creator of the Israeli drama “Prisoners of War” and executive producer of its American remake “Homeland,...

Title: Last Summer Director: Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli Starring: Rinko Kikuchi, Yorick Van Wageningen, Lucy Griffiths, Laura Sofia Bach, Daniel Brady, Ken Brady. The Rome Film Festival – which has had a precipitous downfall over the years – opens with a mediocre film. ‘Last Summer’ directed by Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli has a very simple and nerve-wracking plot: A Japanese mother is obliged to spend a few final days with her 4-year-old son, who’s been whisked away in a custody battle, though we never know why.
