Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant made her debut as host of the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday afternoon in a speech that dinged the recent strikes, AI, the indie world and past boyfriends obsessed with it.
As part of her opening remarks, Bryant confessed that she’d try and do some “classic roasting” in the room, and that resulted in her calling stars like Greta Lee and Natalie Portman a “stupid b*tch”.
“From May December, Natalie Portman is here. Hey, Natalie, you stupid b*tch. … I know, I think I’m supposed to try to make it clever.”
Going around the room…
“Sterling K. Brown — more like Stupid K. B*tch.”
“Greta Lee is here. Greta ,you are a slob and a slut and a stupid b*tch.”
Getting self-deprecating, Bryant admitted, “I’m sorry, I’m not a good roaster. Just know, though, if you’re feeling scared,...

“Honestly,” says Aidy Bryant. “I never want to do anything.” The comedian, who left Saturday Night Live in 2022 after 10 years on the show, enjoys being picky in her work. So when her team approached with an offer to host the Spirit Awards, the first thing she asked herself was whether the gig was worth it. “These awards, and what they’re about, really do touch my heart,” she says. “There’s a kind of yuckiness in Hollywood sometimes, and there’s something pure and beautiful about supporting independent film.” Saying yes also gave her an excuse to call up a few of her favorite former co-workers for help writing — Bryant enlisted Sudi Green, whom she wrote with on Shrill, and frequent sketch collaborator Fran Gillespie. Ahead of the show, Bryant spoke to THR about the current Hollywood landscape and what she’ll be doing before the big show.

Peacock has put in development Cheeky, a comedy based on Ariella Elovic’s book Cheeky: A Head-To-Toe Memoir, from Saturday Night Live‘s Aidy Bryant, writer Sudi Green, executive producer Lorne Michaels, and Universal Television.
Written by Bryant, Green, and Elovic, the Cheeky series adaptation is a refreshingly honest, sometimes obscene collection of first-person stories about all things bodily told by comedians, celebrities, bus drivers, kids, and your grandmother’s crankiest friend. Each episode focuses on a theme and is animated in the same colorful and painterly style as the book by Elovic.
Bryant and Green executive produce with Michaels and Andrew Singer of Michael’s Broadway Video. Elovic and Alice Mathias serve as co-executive producers. Willa Slaughter serves as producer. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show have both secured Emmy writing noms for the first time – noticeably helping to improve the diversity of the category.
The Peacock series and the HBO show will compete in Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s SNL.
A somewhat curious note of this category is that Ashley Nicole Black will compete against herself, having been involved in writing on both The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
It marks The Amber Ruffin Show’s first Emmy nomination since the weekly show launched last year. However, it is not Ruffin herself’s first nom, having been nominated in this category for her work, alongside her head writer Jenny Hagel, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

When E.R. Fightmaster first read the scripts for Season 3 of “Shrill,” they were delighted to see their character’s pronouns had been changed — and with very little fanfare. After a brief stint on Season 2, Fightmaster impressed their way into a substantial recurring role as Em after displaying great chemistry with Fran (Lolly Adefope). Fran is the snarky best friend and perennial roommate of Aidy Bryant’s Annie, the show’s intrepid and cheerful main character, who is based on co-creator and co-writer Lindy West. As Fran’s dreamy new love interest, Fightmaster instantly became “Shrill” family.
With nary a comment from the writers, either behind the scenes or onscreen, the character’s name had changed from Emily to Em, and everyone on the show easily transitioned to using they/them pronouns.
If only it were that easy in real life, Fightmaster mused during a recent phone interview. “It’s...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer watched last weekend’s “Saturday Night Live at Home” and noticed one thing wrong about Cecily Strong’s impression of her. She was drinking a Canadian Labatt beer — not a Michigan brew — so the governor mailed her a homemade care package.
Strong, one of the long-running “SNL” cast members, posted a photo of her gifts on Instagram. Whitmer mailed her mugs, drink sleeves, a t-shirt and several cases of beer from Bell’s Brewery, one of the largest independent craft breweries in Michigan.
“Got a giant and gorgeous Michigan care package sent to New York courtesy of that super cool woman from Michigan,” Strong wrote. “Honestly, this blew me away!”
Strong also thanked “SNL” writers Sudi Green and Fran Gillespie for writing the skit. “I’m sorry I can’t share with you in person, so cheers to you from afar!” she wrote.

Nantucket, Mass. — Adventure drama “The Peanut Butter Falcon” and Syria documentary “For Sama” emerged as the top winners at the 24th annual Nantucket Film Festival.
The festival, which concludes today, as ever put the emphasis on screenwriters and emerging talents. Director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s Sundance hit “Brittany Runs a Marathon” had a number of well-received screenings, as did Gavin Hood’s “Official Secrets.” Documentaries that played at the island getaway off the coast of Massachusetts included “It Started As a Joke,” “David Crosby: Remember My Name” and “We Are the Radical Monarchs.”
The festival’s annual screenwriter tributes went to female forces in the comedy realm. Leslie Dixon, the seasoned scribe behind “Mrs. Doubtfire” and the musical rendition of “Hairspray,” was recognized, as were five former and current women from the “Saturday Night Live” orbit: Jane Curtin, writer Anne Beatts, Heidi Gardner, Sudi Green and Sarah Schneider.

When Jane Curtin began her run as an original member of the Not Ready for Primetime Players on the storied first five seasons of “Saturday Night Live,” it was not unheard of for women working on the show be groped in the hallways of the production offices at 30 Rock. She remembers Milton Berle, the comedy great who hosted “SNL” in April 1979, as being particularly handsy.
“It was part of being a woman in the ’70s,” Curtin tells Variety. “Women’s choices at the time for careers were secretary, nurse, teacher, wife or go into the convent.”
Curtin will gather with a mix of veteran and contemporary women associated with NBC’s late-night institution at the Nantucket Film Festival on Saturday as “SNL” is feted with the festival’s Creative Impact in Television Award.

Shrill has a complicated relationship with its source material but is nevertheless a fun half-hour Aidy Bryant party.
This is a spoiler-free review of Shrill.
What happens when you take the work of one of the sharpest feminist minds of our time and filter it through a feel-good half-hour comedy? I’m honestly not sure, and therein lies the problem.
Hulu has adapted Lindy West’s 2016 memoiristic essay collection Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, which deals predominantly with themes of gender, size, popular culture, and what it means when women take up space, as a vehicle for the incredibly talented Aidy Bryant. The show isn’t a straight adaptation of West’s best-selling book, which is similar to her work as a staff writer for Jezebel, New York Times contributor, and co-founder of Shout Your Abortion, but rather a fictional show that’s inspired by its themes and sometimes...

New calendar year. Same Saturday Night Live season.
The inconsistencies of Season 43 continue, with each solid sketch paired with one that either makes you shake your head, stare in silence, or reach for the remote. On paper, having Sam Rockwell host seemed like a slam-dunk. His quirky energy, off-kilter presence, and comedic timing seemed tailor-made for the show. In actuality, the overall vibe was off, with Rockwell often trying to drag sketches into being rather than simply serving them. Such dragging sometimes led to flop sweat, other times to FCC violations.

2017-12-13T07:11:00-08:00Colin Jost, Michael Che Named 'Saturday Night Live' Head Writers
Saturday Night Live enjoyed critical acclaim, award wins and higher ratings last season thanks to its political sketches during the 2016 presidential election campaign. This season, however, ratings are starting to slide. It might be because the novelty of Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump impersonation is wearing off, or it might be because the show's writing is starting to decline in quality. Producer Lorne Michaels is betting on the latter, and he's trying to counter the problem by promoting Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che to Head Writer Positions. We'll see soon enough if the strategy pays off.
Via Page Six.
Michael Che and Colin Jost have been named the co-head writers of “Saturday Night Live,” NBC announced Tuesday.
They will join current head writers Kent Sublette and Bryan Tucker.

A well-deserved promotion!
NBC announced Tuesday that Colin Jost and Michael Che were named co-head writers of Saturday Night Live.
The pair have been hosting "Weekend Update" since 2014. They will join the show's current head writers, Bryan Tucker and Kent Sublette, both of whom are remaining in their roles. Sudi Green and Fran Gillespie were also named writing supervisors in the announcement.
Jost, a four-time WGA Award winner and Peabody Award recipient who is currently dating Scarlett Johansson, joined SNL in 2005 as a writer. He was previously a head writer from 2012 to 2015 alongside Seth Meyers and then Tucker.
Before joining SNL in 2013, Che appeared on The Daily Show. The new appointment makes him the first person of color to have the title of head writer.

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.
