- ESPN THE MAGAZINE called Bill May the "greatest male synchronized swimmer who ever lived." (April 11, 2016, p. 11).
- In July 2015, after the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Governing Body allowed a mixed-gender duet synchronized swim event, Bill May and Christina Jones won the World Championships Gold Medal for their technical routine.
- In 2004, unable to compete in the FINA World Championships or the International Olympics due to his male gender, Bill retired from synchronized swimming. In Las Vegas, Nevada, Bill joined the cast of 'Cirque du Soleil' for 'O,' their underwater show.
- At ten years old, Bill pool-trained with the Syracuse Synchro Cats (New York), and then the Oswego Lakettes.
- In 1995, Bill relocated to Santa Clara, California, to train with the Aquamaids under the direction of Coach Chris Carver, a famous synchro trainer and coach.
