Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for a new documentary spotlighting the long-time star of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and her own self-titled TV series. It’s “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” premiering on HBO and streaming on HBO Max on May 26th.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Ms. Moore is best remembered for two signature television roles. In the 1960s she was Laura, the wife of Rob Petrie, on the breakthrough “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and in the 1970s she broke further new ground as single gal Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” The latter series had exquisite timing, featuring Mtm as a working woman at the time of first wave feminism. But the real life Moore was not her characters, as the film follows her life from a determined girl dancer in a difficult childhood through 1970s TV production mogul to Academy Award-nominated actor.

Last month, producer Andrew Coles spoke out against Scott Rudin, bringing to light disturbing allegations of workplace abuse.
Once a development executive for Scott Rudin Productions, Coles, who is now a producer on projects like “Queen & Slim,” went on the record in the bombshell report that led to Rudin’s downfall, following decades of bullying and workplace harassment, which has been regarded as one of Hollywood’s long-running open secrets.
After he accused Rudin of workplace abuse, Coles says he believes he was targeted in a possible effort to scare him into silence.
Cole agreed to go on the record for the Hollywood Reporter’s Rudin report on April 5, which he says was set to be published two days later on April 7 — but by April 6, Cole says, news of the article leaked and word of the story started getting around town.

The Anita Hill-led Hollywood Commission released new data on Friday from its recent survey of entertainment industry workers showing “pervasive issues of toxic workplaces, bullying and abuse in entertainment” and highlighting “the dire situation among the industry’s assistants and production workers.”
“Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin may have been the most boldface examples of abuse of power in Hollywood, but they are not outliers,” said Hill, who chairs the commission. “Hollywood has systematically recruited and mistreated a vulnerable class of workers out in the open, in the name of ‘paying dues.’ For there to be real and lasting culture change across Hollywood’s businesses and ranks, then it can no longer ignore how its entry-level employees are hired and treated and must provide the training, resources and modeling necessary to stop the cycles of abuse and retaliation, full-stop.”

Lena Waithe’s long-in-the-works comedy “Twenties” is finally going to series with an eight-episode order at its original home, BET.
The comedy, about a queer black girl in her 20s and her two straight best friends, was first written by Waithe nearly a decade ago and has been in development in one form or another since 2014. The project, based on Waithe’s web series of the same name, was originally put into development at Bet before moving to TBS with a pilot order last February.
Now it has moved back to BET, where it will join Waithe’s other comedy “Boomerang,” which was renewed for a second season earlier this month.

On the heels of the second season pickup of Lena Waithe’s critically-acclaimed Boomerang reboot, BET has ordered Twenties, a single-camera comedy series from the Emmy-winning creator/writer/actor.
Created and written by Waithe when she was in her early 20s, the eight-episode half-hour series follows the adventures of a queer black girl, Hattie, and her two straight best friends, Marie and Nia, who spend most of their days talking ‘ish’ and chasing their dreams. Twenties is a scripted show about friendship, finding love, and messing everything up along the way.
Waithe executive produces with Susan Fales-Hill, who will co-showrun with Waithe. Rishi Rajani and Andrew Coles also executive produce.
“Bet Networks is thrilled to partner once again with the creative visionary Lena Waithe on both Boomerang and Twenties as she is without a doubt a leading relevant voice of our generation and a disruptor in her own right,” said Connie Orlando,...

After recently renewing Lena Waithe’s “Boomerang” for a second season, Bet is teaming up with the prolific screenwriter-producer for another project.
The network has announced an eight-episode order for “Twenties,” a half-hour comedy series which Waithe created when she was in her early 20s.
The show follows the adventures of a queer black girl, Hattie, and her two straight best friends, Marie and Nia, who spend most of their days talking ‘ish’ and chasing their dreams.
“‘Twenties’ has been a project I’ve been dreaming about for as long as I can remember. I think a lot of people were interested, but didn’t see the vision. I’m so grateful Scott Mills and Connie Orlando did. I couldn’t be more excited to deepen my relationship with Bet. I know audiences have been waiting a long time for this one,” said Waithe.
