New York, NY (8/7/23) – At the American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition that took place late June in Chicago, it was revealed that Amy's Big Brother, the prequel to Kyle's Little Sister, would be released under Jy, the middle grade imprint of Yen Press, before the end of the year. While Jy has covered a wide range of middle grade books, including manga and prose novels, the imprint is most known for original graphic novels, most notably Svetlana Chmakova's Berrybrook Middle School series. Released in 2021, Kyle's Little Sister by BonHyung Jeong joined the Jy lineup as another adorable original graphic novel featuring relatable childhood dynamics that every sibling experienced growing up. The announcement of this prequel's publication was met with much excitement from librarians, educators, and other passionate industry professionals.

My name is Grace, not “Kyle’s little sister!”
Having a good-looking, friendly, outgoing older brother sucks—especially when you’re the total opposite, someone who likes staying home and playing video games. Your parents like him better (even if they deny it!), and everyone calls you “Kyle’s little sister” while looking disappointed that you’re not more like him. I was really hoping I’d get to go to a different middle school, but no such luck. At least I have my friends…...

I am so glad middle school is far behind me. I even gladder my two sons are past those years as well, and that I don’t expect to have any other kids to shepherd through those years. And I don’t think it’s purely Schadenfreude when I read a story about middle-schoolers — but there might be an element of “thank ghod that’s long over.”
Brave is a middle-school story — about and mostly for middle-schoolers, though pitched so even adults (even us poor benighted adults) can enjoy it. It’s from Svetlana Chmakova, and is set in the same school as her previous graphic novel Awkward . It struck me as stronger and more emotionally resonant than Awkward was, but maybe that’s just me: I was a large, bullied middle-school boy who spent his time thinking about other things, so Jensen Graham’s story strikes a chord and...
