Jonathan Young grew up in Hong Kong and graduated cinematography MA at the Polish National Film School in Lodz. He shot Joe Piscatella's documentary Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower, which won the Audience Award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and Piscatella's follow ups "Mai Khoi and the Dissidents" and "The Last Stand". Jonathan shot the documentary short "CottonDreams" in 2014, which went to over 90 international film festivals including the 68th Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize in 2015 Amsterdam Film Festival. Young is passionate about the documentary form, but shoots everything from big-budget action films and Hong Kong crime thrillers to arthouse dramas. In 2017 Young shot Operation Red Sea, a US $70m Chinese language action movie in Morocco that has grossed US $579.2m. In 2018 Young collaborated with international superstar Chow Yun-Fat. Young recently worked with Joan Chen on her latest film in Beijing in late 2020. Jonathan has over 40 credits to his name and has filmed projects for HBO, Netflix, CCTV, RTHK and Deutsche SWR.
