Mark Ruffalo, currently in the home stretch of the campaign for his Best Supporting Actor nomination for “Poor Things,” recently spoke with GQ and floated a theory as to why we won’t see him lead a film for his most widely-known character.
“I’d love to do a standalone Hulk,” he said, speaking about his superhero persona in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I just don’t think that’s ever going to happen,” he added, explaining “it’s very expensive if you did a whole movie, which is why they use the Hulk so sparingly. I priced myself out!”
He was sure to say that it was the computer-generated imagery that was so costly – all those processors churning away to make his enormous green muscles look real – and not his salary, of course!
The actor, who still works on the Broadway stage from time to time, also batted away...

From Lassie and Rin Tin Tin to 101 Dalmatians, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Purpose and on and on, the canine genre has been a staple of Hollywood movies for decades. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to make a balls-out, foul-mouthed, R-rated subversion of it all, and finally its time has come with the irresistible Strays, a film definitely not designed as a family movie or for kids — though I would bet, despite the language and nonstop dick jokes, they would love it anyway.
Credit Universal Pictures for not only seeing the potential in a Cocaine Bear this year, but now also with the four-pack of lovable down and dirty dogs who hump everything in sight and use four-letter words in just about every conversation. When Justin Lin stepped away from "Fast X" citing that age-old excuse of "creative differences," Universal was forced to hire a replacement immediately. At the time, shooting on the 10th "Fast and Furious" movie had just got underway, with Lin leaving days after the cameras started rolling on a film that would form part of one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood history.
Lin had overseen multiple films in the "Fast" saga, from "Tokyo Drift" to "Fast & Furious," "Fast Five," "Fast and Furious 6," and "F9." He was the man in charge as the franchise shifted away from street racing and towards the all-out action blockbuster series it's known as today. So to put it mildly, when Universal drafted in "Clash of the Titans" director Louis Leterrier, he had a hell of a task ahead of him.

The franchise that started as a somewhat realistic glimpse into the world of street racing culture in LA and morphed into a fully-fledged action blockbuster series is back. The "Fast and Furious" saga found massive success and longevity by pivoting part-way through its run and embracing all-out spectacle. Now, it might just have outdone itself with "Fast X."
And while the latest installment has so much going for it, Jason Momoa's unhinged, chaotic villain might just be the best thing about "Fast X." The son of crime lord Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), who was on the receiving end of the "Fast" family's machinations in "Fast Five," has returned to avenge his father. And the result is a bombastic, unreasonably fun blockbuster outing.
As /Film's Ethan Anderton put it, "Dante becomes The Joker of the 'Fast and Furious' series," and is "exactly the kind of villain this series needed.

Summer is motoring along, making for the perfect pun for this week’s widest release, Universal Pictures’ “Fast X,” the 10th installment of the street racing franchise starring Vin Diesel, now into its 22nd year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After a bit of pre-production drama in which long-time director Justin Lin vacated that post, replaced by Louis Letterier (“Now You See Me”), Diesel and his “family” returned for “Fast X” with the additions of Jason Momoa and Brie Larson, and with the majority of characters from the last nine movies still appearing in some capacity or other. Reviews for the movie were mixed at best, with just 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst rating for a chapter since Diesel returned for 2009’s “Fast & Furious.”
Universal released the movie into 4,046 theaters with previews on Thursday that amounted to $7.5 million and contributed to its $28 million opening Friday. Audiences...

This post contains spoilers for "Fast X."
Walking out of Louis Letterier's "Fast X," you may find yourself reminded of the sensation you felt leaving Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," when it became abundantly clear that, despite that film's title, only half of the story was being told. Fans knew long in advance that both stories would be split across multiple films, but it's one thing to read about that beforehand and another to viscerally experience it when the credits begin to roll.
Still, even though the Fast and Furious movies frequently flout the laws of physics in a way some may argue borders on science fiction, I'd argue "Fast X" actually shares much more DNA with Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Infinity War" than it does with Villeneuve's epic. "Infinity War" and "Fast X" were both billed as the first of a two-part conclusion (or is "Fast X" now the first of a three-part conclusion?...

Buoyed by over-the-top stunts, the "Fast & Furious" franchise has never been subtle about much of anything, and this is especially true for retcons. Over the course of ten popcorn flicks, the series has introduced more than one long-lost #family member. In "Fast & Furious 6," Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw (first known as Ian Shaw) materialized as the brother of Luke Evans' villain, Owen Shaw. Just two years ago, "F9" revealed that the head of the family, Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto, had his own long-lost brother, Jakob (John Cena).
The trend continues in "Fast X," which, as others have pointed out, really missed out on the chance to call itself "Fast10 Your Seatbelts." The tenth "Fast & Furious" film has earned praise for the way it seamlessly integrates Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes — a contender for the franchise's best baddie, writes /Film's Rafael Motamayor — into footage from "Fast Five.

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
Even before "Fast X" hit theaters on Friday, headlines had already spoiled the return of a certain actor who seemed done with the franchise forever. The cat is long since out of the bag now, but that doesn't make it any less surprising in the credits scene to see none other than Dwayne Johnson show up as Luke Hobbs again in "Fast X."
What's surprising about it, despite Johnson leading the 2019 spin-off "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," is that the actor had indicated he was done with "Fast & Furious" back in the summer of 2021 when the last movie, "F9," hit. At the time, he and Vin Diesel were embroiled in a public feud, with Diesel taking credit for Johnson's acting, and Johnson making veiled references to Diesel as a "candy ass" in a since-deleted Instagram post.

Fast X is an incredibly dumb time at the movies. Not just in an F9 “they took a car to space” kind of dumb, but in a more fundamental Fate of the Furious “why did they name the baby Brian like he’s not still alive?” kind of way. There’s always room for big, dumb entertainment at the multiplex, especially the kind of pure, mind-numbing escapism at which this improbable billion-dollar franchise has excelled. Since the franchise apex of Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 it’s hard not feeling the constant drag of diminishing returns. An ever-evolving cast of regulars starts to feel like too much baggage even for this family––especially when they don’t even stay dead or are treated as goners even though they’ve just “retired.” A great summer actioner can be big and dumb, but it can’t also be clunky. Thankfully,...

The “Old Guard” sequel starring Charlize Theron doesn’t even have an official release date, but a third installment may already be brewing. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” producer Marc Evans told me at the premiere of “The Mother,” Netflix’s new Jennifer Lopez action movie.
In “The Old Guard 2,” Theron reprises her role as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, and Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli return as gay couple Joe and Nicky. “You’re going to see more story of Joe and Nicky,” Evans assured.
After pandemic delays, filming began on the sequel, with Victoria Mahoney directing, about a year ago. Asked if Theron was contracted for a third movie, Evans would only say, “Charlize is a producer on the movie and deeply supportive of the franchise.”

Plot: Dom (Vin Diesel) is forced to reckon with his actions when the psychopathic son (Jason Momoa) of a past enemy goes after him and his “family.”
Review: Fast X is meant to be either the first of a two-part finale or the beginning of a series-ending trilogy. The original plan was for two movies, but according to Diesel and much of the cast, there might still be more fuel in the tank for this long-lasting series. Having seen Fast X, the two-movie plan makes sense, but a trilogy feels like a bridge too far as, while fun, Fast X is too thinly plotted to serve as the first film in a trilogy. While no one can doubt this is an action-packed thrill ride which, thankfully, improves on the mostly disliked F9, like most films that are set up as the first half of a longer story, it’s never...

We’re three weeks into the summer movie season, and it’s looking much like previous months where only one or two movies are doing well, while all else flounders. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

When you think about the "Fast & Furious" franchise, there are two immediate things that come to mind. The first is fambly (sometimes rendered as #family) and the second is, without a doubt, the idea of practical stunts grounded in reality.
Okay, so maybe we're being a little sarcastic about that second one. Yet the fact remains, director Louis Leterrier ("The Incredible Hulk") wanted to bring the franchise back down to earth in "Fast X," while still recognizing the need for over-the-top set pieces in any "Fast & Furious" film.
Just two years ago, the ninth installment in the long-running action film series, "F9," put Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Tyrese Gibson behind the wheel of a car in deep-sea diving suits and rocketed them into space. To their credit, the filmmakers consulted actual NASA rocket scientists to ensure the scene would be "logistically, scientifically" sound. That doesn't change the fact...

The gang’s all here in the trailer for Fast X – the first part of what’s expected to be a two film franchise finale for the Fast Family. As per other instalments, the trailer promises a mix of cheese and ass-kicking glory, with Dominic Torretto (Vin Diesel) going up against a new baddie, Jason Momoa’s Dante, with a big grudge. Based on the trailer, it looks like the big Rio heist in Fast Five had dire consequences for Dante, and now he’s kidnapped Dom’s long-lost son, as a way to get some payback. Luckily, Dom’s got his whole family there to help, including his former brother-turned-enemy-turned-friend Jakob (from F9), the Shaws (Jason Statham and Helen Mirren), plus Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty, Jordan Brewster’s Mia, Tyrese’s Roman, Ludacris’s Tej, Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey and even Sung Kang’s Han to help out. Dante has Charlize Theron’s Cipher,...

Start your engines, the first “Fast X” trailer has arrived.
The tenth installment in perhaps modern cinema’s unlikeliest franchise is due out on May 19 and while the Super Bowl will have a sixty-second cutdown, Universal has unleashed the entire, nearly 4-minute trailer early. And it’s a whopper (and you can watch it right now in the player).
As is the tradition for a movie built around family, the trailer begins with the introduction of Abuela Toretto – Dom, Jakob and Mia’s grandmother (played by screen legend Rita Moreno). In 2022, the box office was all over the place in terms of mega-hits and absolute flops, to the point where it was hard to figure out whether the Covid pandemic was still having any effect on things … or whether audiences had just gotten more finicky or inundated with other content. 2023 will certainly be a year to watch, as there are far more potential franchise blockbusters on the way. But other than various Marvel and DC superhero movies, it’s hard to see how this year will fare without a “Top Gun: Maverick” or “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
And yet, if there’s anything we can discern from the Top 14 blockbuster movies we’ve carefully selected for our spotlight below, it’s that Hollywood and theaters are desperately trying to get things back to normal from the “before-times.” The following list is presented in chronological order of release, since there are a few entries,...
