In its most ambitious push into live sports yet, technology giant Apple on Wednesday officially launched its Major League Soccer subscription service, called Mls Season Pass.
The new service will be available in 100 countries at launch, and will be the exclusive home for Mls games through 2033, thanks to a 10-year deal valued at about 250 million per year.
While Apple has explored the sports space before (most notably with its Friday night Major League Baseball games last season), the Mls deal is on a different level, with exclusive global rights to hundreds of matches.
With the NBA said to be seeking digital partner for its upcoming rights talks, and with the NFL keeping a close eye on the space as it evolves, the Mls service is being viewed as a bellwether on its ambitions in the sector.

A reconceived SportsNation and a half-hour show from popular opinion host Stephen A. Smith are heading to ESPN+ as the growing streaming service adds more episodes of studio fare.
Both shows are slated to premiere Monday exclusively on January 11. SportsNation will hit the streaming service every weekday at 9:30Am Et and then be available on demand. Stephen A’s World will have nighttime premieres on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
The new shows are arriving on ESPN+ during a period of growth and an overall emphasis on streaming by Disney. For ESPN, they hark back to the advent of key studio series like Pardon the Interruption two decades ago as the linear network sought to evolve beyond SportsCenter and live games. At its investor day last month, Disney said ESPN+ had hit 11.5 million subscribers about two-and-a-half years after it launched. It projects having between 20 million and 30 million subscribers by...

Major League Soccer’s annual championship game, the Mls Cup, will air this year on ABC, marking first time the American pro league’s title match will appear on a broadcast network since ABC aired it in 2008. The game is set for Sunday, November 10 at 3 Pm Et/noon Pt and will also be available to stream live on the ESPN and ABC apps.
The shift to ABC comes as it’s Disney sibling ESPN’s turn to host the final as part of a contract with Fox and Univision. Last year’s Mls Cup on Fox, which saw the hometown Atlanta United beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 in front of an Mls-record crowd of 73,019 at Mercedes-Benz Arena, drew 1.56 million total viewers in primetime (on a Saturday), the most-watched Mls championship game since 1997. That was also up than 90% from the 2017 final.

In the opening round of this year’s World Cup, a Moroccan midfielder named Nordin Amrabat collapsed to the grass after knocking heads at full speed with an opposing player from Iran. He lay on the ground for more than a minute before being helped to the side and examined by a member of Morocco’s medical staff, whose idiosyncratic concussion protocol involved slapping him repeatedly in the face.
Among the World Cup’s three-billion-plus audience who watched this display in dismay was Vincent Gouttebarge, a former teammate of Amrabat...
