Over a year after their widely publicized defamation trial, Amber Heard has finally paid her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, the $1 million he was owed in a settlement.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star said he would evenly distribute the money to his top charities: The Make-a-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, the Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society and the Amazonia Fund Alliance.
Depp has made appearances at various film events, with his controversial Cannes Film Festival attendance being the most recent. His film Jeanne du Barry premiered at the French festival and received a 7-minute standing ovation. Supporters of Heard voiced their opinions on Depp’s success at the festival.
Eve Barlow, a journalist and close friend of The Rum Diary actress, posted a picture of Depp on Instagram with the words, “If you support Cannes, you support predators” and captioned under the post, “Cannes seem proud of their history supporting rapists and abusers.

Just a year ago, the image of Johnny Depp smiling and waving atop the Palais steps at the Cannes Film Festival would have been unthinkable to most — including to Depp, himself.
“When you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, then you find the basement to the bottom,” Depp told The Associated Press the day after “Jeanne du Barry”, in which he stars as King Louis Xv, opened Cannes.
This time last year, Depp was immersed in a libel trial he brought against Amber Heard, his ex-wife, based on a 2018 Washington Post op-ed piece in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” A British court had ruled in 2020 that a tabloid labeling Depp “a wife beater” were “substantially true.” Soon after the ruling in the U.K., Hollywood had largely cut ties with Depp, jettisoning him from both the “Fantastic Beasts...

Brie Larson seemed to dodge questions surrounding this year’s Cannes Film Festival opening with the Johnny Depp-led film “Jeanne du Barry”.
The actress, who is a juror at the 2023 festival, mainly avoided answering whether or not she’ll be attending the world premiere of Depp’s new film — his first leading role in three years following his publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. Last June, a U.S. jury found that Heard defamed Depp and awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages, followed by the case being settled in December. As a juror, Larson isn’t required to attend since the historical drama is not playing in competition.
“You’re asking me that?” the “Captain Marvel” star responded to the question during a jury press conference on Tuesday. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically.”
Larson, 33, was seemingly pressed by media given...

A new social media campaign with the hashtag #CannesYouNot is calling out the Cannes Film Festival for “celebrating abusers for 76 years.”
The campaign was launched online, days before the festival, by supporters of Amber Heard.
Her ex-husband Johnny Depp’s new film, “Jeanne du Barry,” will open the prestigious festival on Tuesday night when Cannes kicks off in the South of France.
Eve Barlow — a journalist, activist and close friend of Amber Heard’s — posted the hashtag across her social platforms. “Cannes seem proud of their history supporting rapists and abusers,” Barlow posted on social media with the French expression, “Plus ça change,” which roughly translates to, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
Along with her caption, Barlow posted a series of photos depicting accused men who have been prominent presences at Cannes over the years including Depp, Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, Gerard Depardieu and Luc Besson.

Mila Kunis, Debra Messing and other entertainment industry figures are among those who have sent an open letter to Amazon and Barnes & Noble, asking that the controversial book and documentary Hebrews to Negroes: Wake up Black America be removed from their platforms.
The nonprofit organization Creative Community for Peace was behind the letter, claiming both Amazon and B&n allegedly “refused to remove the title and continue to profit from its bigotry.”
Kunis, Messing, Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik and songwriter Diane Warren were among 200 signatories to the letter. It was addressed to “Jeff Bezos, James Daunt, and the leaders at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.”
The protest comes in the wake of NBA star Kyrie Irving promoting the film with a tweet, then refusing to give an adequate apology. He was then suspended by the Brooklyn Nets and was ordered by the Brooklyn Nets to meet with various groups to make things right.

Domestic violence allegations continue for Amber Heard. Months after the actress lost a defamation lawsuit against Johnny Depp, which saw the jury award him 8.35 million, Heard reportedly got into a fight with her current beau, Eve Barlow. According to International Business Times, the fight was in a hotel in Israel, where Heard has been vacationing with daughter Oonagh Page following the defamation trial. However, the report states that the daughter wasn’t present during the incident. There isn’t any footage of the said fight, but several witnesses are documented, most notably a citizen who claims to have heard a loud

For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Eve Barlow pens a tribute to “Licorice Pizza” (screenplay by Paul Thomas Anderson).
You can smell the acne on Cooper Hoffman’s chin. You can feel the heat on the pavement as Alana Haim sprints toward a feeling. You can taste the burgers from the drive-thru and the martini at the clubhouse bar. You can almost touch the life in San Fernando Valley that Paul Thomas Anderson remembers from the 1970s, or dreams that were closer to the version he realizes on screen.
The way Anderson’s latest ode to the part of L.A. in which he was raised is brought to life speaks to a filmmaker who wants to embrace a less-complicated world, a slower world, a more meaningful world, a world in which you had to remember someone’s phone number if you wanted to get to know them, a world...
