- A key trombonist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1932 to 1951 and, again, during most of the 1960's. Left the music scene in 1971 to work as a political consultant for the U.S. Government, until his retirement in 1974. Acquired his nickname 'the Deacon' because of his penchant for clean living (no drugs or alcohol).
