NBC has tapped “Aj and the Queens” alum Josh Segarra to star in its “Night School” adaptation, taking over the role played by Kevin Hart in the film.
The multi-camera comedy pilot, which is executive produced by Hart, centers on a unique mix of adults at a night school Ged prep class who unexpectedly bond over their shared experience and find themselves helping each other both inside and outside of the classroom. Segarra will play Teddy Walker, a charming salesman who enrolls in the class.
He joins the previously announced Shanola Hampton, who plays the Tiffany Haddish role in the pilot, Carrie Dawes, a high school teacher who doesn’t suffer fools and takes no prisoners. “Marlon” creator Chris Moynihan is writer and executive producer.

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are the stars behind the comedy Night School, but it’s a talented ensemble cast that basically steals the show. Fans of the stars will probably satisfied by their banter, but there are a ton of jokes to go around in the comedy.

The takes may not have been perfect, but they were hilarious! One of these students is Teddy Walker, played by Hart, who has to give the class everything he's got to pass and change his future, after his career takes an unexpected turn. Tiffany Haddish hopes to keep up her cinematic hot streak by starring opposite Kevin Hart in the new comedy Night School, out this week from Universal Pictures. Hart plays Teddy Walker, a charismatic salesman who, after a professional disaster, winds up in night school along with a bunch of other misfits and outcasts, being taught by Carrie (Haddish).
The movie is tracking for a three-day bow of $30 million-plus, which would put it in line with other recent live-action features starring Hart. To help it reach an audience, the studio mounted a campaign that plays up the mix of Hart's ...

Only a fool would say that Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish aren’t hilarious. But only a dumbass would argue that their new comedy, Night School, isn’t the worst kind of lazy, laughless, paycheck-begging twaddle. What is it with stars who think that their responsibility to audiences stops at showing up?
Director Malcolm D. Lee, who showed Haddish in all her raunchy glory in Girls Trip, leaves her in the lurch with this PG-13 softball that’’ nowhere near as foul-mouthed nasty as it needs to be. Has no one...

Is it that hard to make a lowbrow comedy? More crummy sitcom than movie, Night School casts Kevin Hart as Teddy Walker, a high school dropout who enrolls in a kooky Ged class after losing his job as a gas grill salesman. (It literally goes up in flames in a belabored pyrotechnic stunt.) If going back to his old…...

You expect a movie starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish to have its share of highly combative verbal fireworks. And given that “Night School” was directed by Malcolm D. Lee, whose last picture, the deliriously raunchy and spirited “Girls Trip,” showcased Haddish as a one-woman comic hurricane (her character was a gale force of pithy obscene truth-telling), you’re more than primed to sit back and watch the fusillade of low-down insults fly. The first time Hart and Haddish share a scene, that’s just what happens. They pull up to a stoplight in separate convertibles, and he rags on her for being such a loudmouth, and she comes back at him, and the lines get tossed like kitchen crockery hitting the walls, and around the time she assaults him with the word “leprechaun” the two devolve into literal snarls. If this is what vandalistic screwball banter sounds like in 2018, I’m all for it.

“Night School,” which is easy to tell apart from previous Kevin Hart movies because it takes place in a school at night, is a major turning point in its star’s long and prosperous career: Barring a complete overhaul of his entire brand, this botched first draft of a bad comedy is the last time that anyone will ever catch themselves waiting for Kevin Hart to do better.
In his latest and least amusing film — which ends with an earnest speech about the value of self-improvement — Hart is just repackaging the same manic shtick that he’s driven into the ground with the likes of “The Wedding Ringer,” “Ride Along,” and “Ride Along 2: Here We Go Again,” which has another sequel on the way. Once again, he plays a motor-mouthed striver with a heart of gold, using an elastic mask of empty affect to hide that there’s nothing going on behind it.

Such is his affability – and comedic presence – it’s fair to say that people will go and see Kevin Hart films, because, well, they star Kevin Hart. And his latest, Night School, is out this week. To mark the occasion we caught up with the director Malcolm D. Lee to speak about his experience working with the Hollywood star.
We discussed Hart’s character work, and how he balances that fine line between comedy and pathos, while we also asked Lee what subject he would like to retake if he were to sign up to a night school programme himself. He goes on to discuss Tiffany Haddish, and why it’s reached a point where studios need to keep green-lighting films made by, and starring, people of colour.
Finally he talks about his next project, Uptown Saturday Night, and comments on rumours that we may well see another addition to the Best Man franchise…...
