Remi Itani's debut documentary offers a snapshot of the Bab Al Tabbaneh district of Tripoli, an area which in addition to suffering from more general socioeconomic problems faces a raft of community tensions - the vestiges of old resentments from the Lebabnese Civil War and the spill-over from the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
Itani comes at the neighbourhood from the perspective of Ibrahim and Mahasen, not long married and with a baby on the way. There's a tear tattoo on Ibrahim's face but he also seems to bear an equally permanent internal imprint of sadness. He might be full of bravado when the director asks him about his plans for fatherhood, quickly turning his defence into offence by suggesting that she "has complexes", but often when her camera catches him when he's less aware of it, his face betrays and engrained and permanent level of anxiety.
As Itani observes his day-to-day interactions with.

Shoring up artistic director Orwa Nyrabia’s commitment to showcasing more women’s stories and platforming more women’s voices, Idfa has announced that this year’s festival features the highest percentage of female filmmakers in the event’s 31-year history: 64% of competition titles and 47% of the total program.
“Reaching a fairer representation was much easier than it seemed to be,” noted Nyrabia. “We only had to keep our goal in mind. The outstanding films that found their way to us this year was a humble reminder that we are in the presence of exceptional female filmmakers.”
The festival opens with the world premiere of Mehrdad Oskouei’s “Sunless Shadows,” which depicts five young Iranian women complicit in the murders of abusive husbands, fathers, or brothers-in-law. Oskouei’s film competes in the Feature-Length Documentary Competition alongside Jørgen Leth’s “I Walk”; Heidi Hassan and Patricia Pérez Fernández’s “In a...

Sudan’s “You Will Die at Twenty,” a “call for freedom” in the words of director Amjad Abu Alala, won the Golden Star award for best narrative feature film at the El Gouna Film Festival, one of the Arab world’s top film events. The film previously won the Venice Film Festival’s award for best debut film.
The picture is about a young man, Muzamil, raised to believe that he will die at 20, due to a holy man’s prophecy. Muzamil is torn between the counsel of religious leaders to study the Koran and the advice of a hedonistic father figure to enjoy what little time he has left.
Interviewed at the festival, the director said: “I think all I did was put a mirror up to what I see. It has to do with this absolute faith in the prophecies of holy men.” He had previously told Variety:...
