He was an architectural historian who studied and explained the sprawling cityscape of Los Angeles to residents, students, and tourists. He co-wrote (with David Gebhard of UC Santa Barbara) "An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles," a field guide that identified, praised, and sometimes jeered the city's diverse architecture.
