In a recent livestream with fans on Stationhead, Olivia Rodrigo told her fans that the last book she read was Hood Feminism: Notes From the Women That a Movement Forgot, a 2020 collection of essays by Mikki Kendall. “The last book I read is this book called Hood Feminism that’s so good,” she said, as captured in a tweet. “I really recommend it. It’s so good. It’s, like, a very intersectional feminism book. It’s awesome.”

“Black Panther” star Letitia Wright, who plays tech genius (and T’Challa’s sister) Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had fans upset on Thursday night after she shared an antivaxxer video on Twitter and then began tweeting in apparent support of the position.
We’ve embedded some of those tweets as screenshots below. See them on Twitter here, and here.
For those who don’t know, “Antivaxxer” is a portmanteau describing people who adhere to a broad range of unfounded conspiracy theories about vaccinations (anti-vaccine). The movement, which grew primarily thanks to a thoroughly debunked scientific fraud that falsely asserted vaccination played a role in autism and also incorporates other false claims, has gained widespread support over the last 20 years with extremely dangerous consequences.

Juneteenth Book Fest organizers Saraciea Fennell (left) and L.L. McKinney (right).
As the self-appointed gatekeeper of literature - and therefore culture - the publishing industry's overwhelming whiteness is a major problem. Publicist and founder of The Bronx Is Reading book festival Saraciea Fennell says she estimates that traditional book festivals, a cornerstone of marketing and promotion for new titles, are 80-90 percent white. That means the books and authors audiences hear about are chosen by the same (mostly white) people over and over again. Ahead of the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, Fennell and acclaimed fantasy author L.L. McKinney are teaming up to change that dynamic, launching the Juneteenth Book Fest.
"It's going to be 10 percent [about] Black Lives Matter and 90 percent Black joy, Black love, Black everything else. Racism isn't all that encompasses who we are."
Featuring a dozen panels and highlighting more than 30 Black authors, including Angie Thomas,...
