Despite Marvel being home to some of the most iconic female characters on the roster of super-powered beings in comics, the MCU never truly did justice to their potential on the silver screen. The long-overdue Captain Marvel was financially successful thanks to the pre-Endgame buzz, but the reception among fans was lackluster due to the flimsy characterization and quite derivative narrative structure of the story. However, when it came to female character-led projects on the small screen, MCU brought their A game time and time again, as seen with ventures like WandaVision, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, and therefore fans wished to see something along those lines in movies as well. Adhering to this request, MCU brought the story of legacies, presenting the three generations of heroes: Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan, upholding the Marvel moniker in The Marvels, a direct sequel to Brie Larson previous MCU venture, Captain Marvel.

Stars: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh | Written by Nia DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik | Directed by Nia DaCosta
Directed by Nia DaCosta (who helmed the recent Candyman remake), The Marvels is the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a direct sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), which introduced Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel. It’s also a continuation of the events of both the Ms Marvel TV show (2022), which introduced Iman Vellani as Pakistani-American New Jersey teen superhero Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel, and WandaVision, which showed Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) getting light-based superpowers of her own.
The plot is essentially a superhero team-up story, of the type beloved by comics fans everywhere. It begins with Kree revolutionary leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) discovering a cosmic bangle that is identical to the one that gives Kamala her powers.

This article contains major spoilers for "The Marvels."
Whether you loved it (like I did) or hated it, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nia DaCosta's "The Marvels," is mandatory viewing for fans of the MCU. The film is the follow-up to not only James Gunn's conclusion of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy but also the Disney+ series "Secret Invasion," "Loki" season 2," and ... oh yeah, "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" also came out this year, didn't it? More directly, "The Marvels" is the sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel" as well as the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel" and "WandaVision." I know, I know, that's an absurd amount of titles to precede a single film, but that's the MCU, baby!
The new film centers on Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) as the trio must work together,...

Welcome back, one and all, to the latest episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Perhaps that should read "latest issue," given the way the McU's output so closely resembles the way Marvel Comics (and most ongoing superhero and non-superhero comics titles in general) tell a long, sprawling, and occasionally coherent story over numerous installments and a great number of years. In any case, the prospect of watching a new MCU movie has become increasingly more daunting than it used to be, with characters and continuity piling up like so much unfinished homework.
Fortunately, director and co-writer Nia DaCosta is a sturdy, responsible filmmaker, and thus her first foray into the MCU, "The Marvels," never allows itself to become too overcomplicated. While the film features the big-screen debuts of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who was introduced in "WandaVision," and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who first premiered in her own series, "Ms. Marvel,...

Iman Vellani is a movie star, a gravitational field in human form who commands attention the moment she appears on-screen. That much was blindingly obvious as early as the premiere of the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel," one of three distinct and mostly unconnected installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that "The Marvels" is attempting to pay off. The decision to forego a straightforward sequel for this latest blockbuster and instead push the chips all the way in on yet another shared-universe crossover has always felt inevitable -- this is a movie that literally shares the name of its own brand, after all. But Kamala Khan was a rare exception to that rule. Refreshingly, a talented and character-focused creative team (led by Bisha K. Ali) infused the journey of a young Muslim girl taking her first steps towards heroism with the cultural import, nuanced interiority, and sense of wide-eyed wonder that's all too lacking these days.

“This can’t be right,” says a disembodied voice, over an image of an Air Force pilot, signaling to her wingman in an adjoining jet. The voice commands someone to go back further, this time to images of a little girl racing a go-cart. “Who is this person?” asks the voice, speaking for most of the viewers as well.
The confusion of the speaker, later revealed to be the Skrull Talos, comes from his expectation to see memories of Hala, the assumed homeworld of the Kree warrior Vers. He doesn’t realize that Vers was born on Earth as Carol Danvers. After Talos unlocks her memories, Carol recovers her identity and her full power, eventually becoming the superhero Captain Marvel.
For some, the decision to make Carol an amnesiac both hampered the performance of the energetic actor Brie Larson and...
