Trust Malayalam cinema to give the audience some heartfelt slice-of-life films from the rural parts of the state and create an engaging narrative. There are plenty of examples from the industry that could fit the bill. Padmini is one such film, and writer Deepu Pradeep and director Senna Hedge have given us a humorous satire on how society generally is and how it treats us.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Film?
The opening credits of Padmini must be one of the most creative ways to introduce Rameshan. As the scene rolls out only on voiceovers, the viewers hear almost every family member, neighbor, and friend of his talk about the wedding day, his bride, her family, and the food served, followed by their trivial questions, which are usually passed off as small talk. The makers aptly represented what exactly happens at Kerala weddings, and viewers get the feeling of attending one vicariously.

Padmini is a Malayalam comedy-drama film directed by Senna Hegde and written by Deepu Pradeep. The film stars Kunchacko Boban, Aparna Balamurali, Madonna Sebastian, and Vincy Aloshious.
Padmini is a film that is both funny and heartwarming, but it is also a bit of a mess. The film’s humor is sharp and witty, and the performances are all top-notch. Kunchacko Boban is particularly good as Ramesh, and he brings a lot of heart to the role. Aparna Balamurali, Madonna Sebastian and especially Vincy are also excellent, and they have great chemistry together. However, the film’s plot is a bit convoluted, and the film have no logic and unbelievable at times. Additionally, some of the film’s humor is a bit crude. The film also suffers from some major miscasting.

Review‘Padmini’, which has Aparna Balamurali, Madonna Sebastian, and Vincy Aloshious opposite Kunchacko Boban, manages to find a new path – original and a wee bit hilarious, but not entirely engaging. When there are three women playing lead opposite a single man in a romantic comedy, you imagine it treading the path of several movies that successfully trod it before: Premam, Boeing Boeing and the like. But Padmini, which has Aparna Balamurali, Madonna Sebastian and Vincy Aloshious opposite Kunchacko Boban, manages to find a new path, original and a wee bit hilarious, though not entirely engaging. Director Senna Hegde, who gave us the wonderful Thingalazhcha Nishchayam and an enjoyable 1744 White Alto, offers a fun film with Padmini, scripted by Deepu Pradeep. But despite its interesting premise, the film loses focus. Like all of Senna’s films, Padmini goes directly into the thick of Rameshan’s story, beginning with a traditional wedding,...

ReviewSenna Hegde who made the wonderful ‘Thingalazhcha Nischayam’ takes a more commercial approach to comedy in this film, which is enjoyable in most parts.CrisKanhangad, or at least the parts of Kanhangad in Kerala’s Kasargod district where Senna Hegde places his new Malayalam film, is so charmingly rustic with muddy red roads and prettily lit bars that it looks partly like a Western of the 1960s. Minus Clint Eastwood, the setting has got everything, complete with the sound of a pistol that goes off every now and then. 1744 White Alto is a raw comedy, enjoyable in most parts, slightly off-putting towards the end, anchored on an unfitting mix of the personal and professional life of a police officer. But Senna is a master caster and all the actors, beginning from the emphatic Sharaf U Dheen to the newcomers, make it a comfortable ride. Unlike his award-winning first release Thingalazhcha Nishchayam,...

Acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan and popular actor-producer Kunchacko Boban are re-teaming for “Ariyippu” (“Declaration”), the first Indian film in Locarno’s international competition in 17 years.
The Malayalam-language film follows Hareesh (Boban) and Reshmi (Divya Prabha), an immigrant couple from Kerala working in a medical gloves factory near Delhi, who aspire to go abroad for a better life. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, when an old video resurfaces among the factory workers, it opens up a Pandora’s box that threatens the couple’s jobs and marriage.
Narayanan got the germ of the film’s idea from a newspaper article about a female bank employee who had approached the Mumbai high court demanding a “declaration” clarifying that a video which had been circulated in her bank was a look alike and not her. That idea travelled with Narayanan for a while until he hit upon the premise about a migrant couple working in a gloves factory.

ReviewTalented actors such as Sabumon, Johny Antony, Karamana Sudheer and others are wasted in clichéd ideas of humour.CrisThe main thought behind the making of Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan appears to have been to make a film with a lot of “comedy” in it. Nearly every scene is written with this idea, you can see. The problem with such ideas is that if the comedy fails, the entire film comes crumbling down faster than a house of cards. That’s what happens with Upacharapoorvam. Lead actor Saiju Kurup, and others including Sabumon, Johny Antony, Shabareesh Varma, Shailaja Ambu and a number of newcomers do try their best, but it really isn’t in their hands to save the film. One of the joys of being a die-hard Malayalam cinema fan is that you're treated to both brilliant mainstream cinema, and a flourishing indie and festival film line-up. The most recent addition to the latter is writer/director Senna Hegde's 0-41* - the trailer was released yesterday, on Indian Independence day, as the film's way of also celebrating "indie-pendence", or the independence of indie filmmaking. Hegde's film is described as a kind of docu-drama, in which real characters -- none of the people in the film are actors -- share real accounts of their lives. There's Rajesh, a security guard and cable TV handyman. There's Abhi, doing what he can where he can. There's the college dropout Sanal. There's part-time driver Vipin, whose meagre work ethic...
