Leandro Picarella was born in Agrigento, and spent his childhood and adolescence here. After high school he decided to continue his studies by enrolling in the Musicology course at the University of Palermo. He subsequently specialized in Italian cinema and theatrical literature at the University of Florence, with a thesis on the work of the Sicilian playwright Pier Maria Rosso di San Secondo. It was in this period that he began to be interested in film directing and made his first short films. As a student of the documentary course at the Centro Sperimentale di cinematografia - Sicily branch, he made Triokala in 2015, his first feature film which received some recognition in Italy and abroad. He subsequently made the short film Epicentro, which premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival - Critics' Week, and his second feature film Divinazioni, presented at IDFA (International documentary film festival Amsterdam) and at the Festival dei Popoli in 2020 and released in Italian cinemas in October 2021.His latest feature film, Segnali di vita had its world premiere at the 18th Rome Film Festival. Released in March 2024 in Aosta Valley cinemas.Together with Luca Scarabelli and Andrea José Di Pasquale, he is among the partners of Qoomoon, an independent film production company.
