Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

In a change of pace, the Oscars brought on leading figures from beyond the movie world to introduce this year’s Best Picture nominees, including famed civil rights activist and Georgia Congressman John Lewis. But how Lewis was used left many on Twitter seething.
Lewis is best known for decades of civil rights activism, most famously suffering injuries at the hands of state troopers at the Edmund Pettis Bridge during the 1965 Selma March. At the Oscars, he was joined by Amandla Stenberg, star of the Black activist drama “The Hate U Give,” and together they provided the introduction for “Green Book,” which went on to win Best Picture.
“I can bear witness that the portrait of that time and place in our history is very real. It is seared in my memory,” Lewis said of the Jim Crow South, which “Green Book” takes place in.
“Our nation bears the scars of that time,...

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring a rundown of my picks of the Top 30 comics released in February 2018. This is part one, a countdown of books 30-16… But first the caveats:
First and foremost this is simply my list and with that comes a great deal of subjectivity. Any art form is a subjective medium and taste plays a major role. So if you feel my rankings are way off you probably have a legitimate point. My hope is to simply to highlight great books that deserve attention. We too often focus on the negative so why not take some time to celebrate the positive. Since this is my list that also means I can only rank issues I have actually read. There may be a book that is in your top five that does not make the cut. Please let me know. I try...
