Netflix and the U.K.’s National Youth Theatre have launch an awareness program after a survey revealed alarming concerns about nepotism in the creative industries.
A National Youth Theatre survey of 3,000 young people across the U.K. found that the “nepo-baby” effect extended beyond on screen talent to behind the scenes roles too. Some 79% of young people believed they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it and a further two-thirds (68%) thought they needed to live in a big city to have a career in TV or film.
To alleviate these concerns, Ignite Your Creativity, a free program from Netflix and the National Youth Theatre, aims to help young people build networks and raise awareness about the wide range of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theatre. The program will support 500 young people aged 14-25 years in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the Northeast of the country.

The “Nepo baby” effect has been laid bare in the UK by Netflix/National Youth Theatre research that showed the vast majority of respondents believe connections rather than talent are required to make it big.
Unveiled alongside the research, the streamer and theater have launched the Ignite Your Creativity program to “crack the class ceiling,” which will support 500 young people in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the North East to build industry connections and knowledge of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theater.
Four out of five (79%) of the 3,000 young people surveyed believe they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it, and that the issue isn’t limited to on-screen success but covers a wealth of positions behind the camera. One respondent to the survey said “nepo babies” emerge at all levels, adding: “Most people don’t seem to realize that this kind of nepotism isn’t just for celebrities.

Matthew Wiseman came to work for BAFTA La in 2002 for what he thought would be a short stint. The BAFTA Film Awards had just shifted their dates ahead of the Oscars and the Hollywood outpost was expanding.
“BAFTA was in such a growth spurt at that point, that I mentally thought I would be here for three years,” says the newly appointed CEO of BAFTA La, who starts his role Nov. 1. “But like many Brits, without any planning” he put down roots, including marrying a California native.
Wiseman’s initial role was to help expand the screening series; the BAFTA insiders program, which helps newcomers navigate Hollywood; and the tea party for Emmy nominees. Previously chief operating officer, Wiseman is succeeding Chantal Rickards as the chief exec as she returns to London at the end of this month after four years at the helm.

USC student Asligul Armagan had attended BAFTA Los Angeles events as the plus-one of a friend, so when the organization opened its Newcomers Program to non-Brits, she welcomed the chance to join.
“It was a shot in the dark, and I was over the moon to hear I was accepted,” Armagan says. The events have opened up a world to the global media and communications student at USC Annenberg.
That is exactly the idea, says BAFTA La CEO Chantal Rickards. “We have always been international,” she says. “The Brits travel well across the globe.”
The Newcomers Program is one of several outreach plans that BAFTA La started to help British talent find their footing in Hollywood. Those in the program are paired with mentors, network with veterans and attend the org’s screenings and other social events so they can navigate in Hollywood.

If you hadn't realized that Dick Van Dyke is American before you saw Mary Poppins, his British accent was probably a clear indication! In fact, the actor recently apologized to the English people for the "atrocious" accent he used playing chimney sweep Bert in the beloved 1964 musical. That mea culpa came last July, after the British Academy of Film and Television Arts picked Dick for its 2017 Britannia Award for Excellence in Television. "I appreciate this opportunity to apologize to the members of BAFTA for inflicting on them the most atrocious cockney accent in the history of cinema," he said, per The Guardian. But Chantal Rickards, BAFTA's La chief executive, was gracious about Dick's Cockney cock-up. "We look forward to his acceptance speech in whatever accent he chooses on the night," she said. "We have no doubt it will be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." (Photo Credit: Getty Images) At a 2014 red carpet event, the...
