After 15 years of curating the best of short films, Vimeo is giving some insight into what makes a coveted Staff Pick.
The streaming platform for rising filmmakers launched a Generation Vimeo campaign to mark the 15th anniversary of the website. Staff Pick Best of the Year winning director Danae Gosset provided the animation for this short film inspired by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s “A Brief History of Baldessari” video, and directed and produced by Vimeo’s internal creative team, to share the behind-the-scenes process for selecting Staff Picks. “High Maintenance” co-creator Ben Sinclair provides the voiceover for the video, returning to Vimeo where the HBO series originated. Watch the video below.
Founded in 2008, Vimeo’s Staff Pick program has honored filmmakers like Josh and Benny Safdie and “Aftersun” director Charlotte Wells. Kristoffer Borgli, John Wilson, Daniels, Savannah Leaf, A.V. Rockwell, Hiro Murai, Kogonada, Eliza Hittman, David Lowery, and...

Pride is only one month, but queer film lives on all year. And as long as there are obstacles to funding, production, and distribution for queer films, shorts remain the easiest way for filmmakers to get noticed and get a foot in the door of the industry. That’s doubly and sometimes triply important when you’re a marginalized voice, especially if your work deals openly with themes of queerness, sexuality, race, and/or gender.
While the U.S. has fewer avenues for short films to gain attention than say Europe or Asia, there will always be cinephiles who enjoy the unique pleasures of a well-made short. The best short films don’t use the form as a mere stepping stone to a feature, but as a unique and valuable medium unto itself.

Dreamville Records released the emotional video for “Sacrifices” on Monday, featuring label artists J. Cole and Olu (EarthGang) alongside Smino and Saba. The clip is dedicated to Olu’s late father and features an appearance from the rapper’s mother.
The Scott Lazer, David Peters and Chad Tennies-directed video shows the four artists laying out the various individual and collective sacrifices they have made, both personal and political. The six-minute clip spans everything from police shooting unarmed black men to romantic dedication, with all sacrifices great and small in between.

Having the No. 1 project in the country is old hat for J. Cole, but the instant success of Dreamville’s highly-anticipated “Revenge of the Dreamers III” collection, which features collaborations with more than 25 artists, writers and producers, took many by surprise.
The first installment of the series arrived in 2014, followed by “Revenge of the Dreamers II” one year later. Both had buzz, but didn’t set the charts on fire like “ROTD3,” the result of a by-invitation-only 10-day studio session held at Tree Sounds Studios in Norcross, Georgia.
Three days before “ROTD3” dropped, Dreamville released the official documentary for the album. Directed by David Peters and produced by Scott Lazer, over 100 hours of footage were edited down into 30 minutes. Currently, the film boasts over 2.3 million views on YouTube.
In the documentary, Cole talks of trying to reach outside of what he came to believe was too insular an inner circle — saying,...

Rapper J. Cole has never shied away from sharing his personal and professional pursuits on the big screen, and the recording artist is back at it with his surprise documentary “Eyez,” which chronicles the creation of his latest record. The 40-minute film has just shown up over on Tidal, and provides a compelling look inside Cole’s work and life.
Earlier this year, HBO debuted yet another documentary about the rising star, a concert doc that featured interviews, a behind the scenes look at Cole’s creative process and much more, directed by Scott Lazer. That feature, entitled “Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming” included Cole performing every song off “2014 Forest Hills Drive,” but “Eyez” moves further away from that style to provide something much more intimate. A concert doc this is not.
