If you enjoyed the furry animated drama “Hayop Ka!” (2020) on Netflix last year, you've got to watch director Avid Liongoren's first feature, “Saving Sally” (2016). There is a level of blood, sweat, and tears that Liongoren poured into “Saving Sally” that just doesn't appear in his follow-up feature. This comic book-themed live-action romance apparently took twelve years to finish, which – considering the sheer craftsmanship of the production, makes sense. In an unabashed mix of traditional animation, stop motion, pop-up book, CGI, and live-action acting, Liongoren stirs in as many elements of the moving image into his concoction of a basic romance-drama – making for a sweet cocktail of visual delight in a feel-good story.
In fact, it's hard to describe “Saving Sally” as a “film.” It's more like a transmedia epic. The premise is simple: meek comic-strip artist, Marty (Enzo Marcos) seeks to win over his best friend and damsel-in-distress, the...

Simon Crowe’s Sc Films International has boarded Filipino superhero adventure, “Zsazsa Zaturnnah vs. the Amazonistas of Planet X,” a buoyant animated feature produced by Franck Priot at Paris’ Ghosts City Films and director Avid Liongoren of Manila-based Rocketsheep Studio.
The acquisition looks set to push Filipino animation into a more global spotlight, pairing this trailblazing project with a highly respected, long-standing animation sales company.
Sc Films has already been linked to high-profile French production companies on animated features such as Folivari’s “Pachamama” and TeamTO’s “Yellowbird.”
“‘Zsazsa’ continues Sc Films interest in the wonderful world of animation. Basically, we just loved the unique pitch and believe it’s not only a fun story but an important one too. Avid is a real talent,” related Crowe.
The film follows Ada, a meek and lovelorn salon owner who pines for his attractive neighbor Dodong while confiding in co-worker Didi.

The FilmPhilippines Office of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (Fdcp) has trebled its annual filming incentives budget from $1 million to $3 million, effective from 2022.
The Philippines offers a range of incentives, including rebate schemes for local and international projects.
“Electric Child” by Swiss Simon Jaquemet, produced by Switzerland’s 8horses GmbH with local production company Epicmedia Productions, was recently approved to receive a 20% cash rebate on its eligible expenses in the Philippines under the Location Incentive Program. The fund requires a minimum qualified production spending of Php 8 million in the Philippines in order to receive a 20% cash rebate that is capped at Php 10 million.
The Fdcp also recently launched CreatePHFilms, a production fund worth $600,000 that supports local films from script through distribution. Production costs are low in the Philippines, compared to the West. “It’s still substantial knowing that the median production cost average production is around Php 8 million in the Philippines,...

The Philippines presents a unique case in animation. Even as one of the world’s leading producers of animation, this island-state has only collected around a dozen domestically-directed features in the last century. While journal articles often accuse local talent and limited resources, outsourcing is also to blame. In the US alone, up to 90% of all American TV animation is produced in Asia; in the Philippines, the fourth largest producer of global animation in the 1980s, this translated to as much as $25 billion Usd in revenue at its peak. Production may stay at home, but ownership ships overseas.
As a result, local auteur Avid Liongoren makes a point to direct his own films. His second feature, “Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story” recently hit Netflix headlines as the streaming site’s first Filipino animated feature. This brightly-colored drama follows the plight of Nimfa Dimaano (Angelica Panganiban), a working-class cat who can never quite settle.

Mongolian filmmaker Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir’s “Ze” won the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival’s Open Doors co-production forum, which featured eight projects from Southeast Asia and Mongolia looking for international partners.
Purev-Ochir’s feature debut tells the story of the budding relationship between a teenage shaman and a young woman, set in the rough-and-tumble yurt district of the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. “Ze,” which is produced by Mongolia’s Guru Media and co-produced by France’s Aurora Films, will receive 40,000 Swiss francs in production support from the Open Doors initiative in collaboration with the City of Bellinzona and the Swiss production support fund Visions Sud Est, which is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (Sdc).
The jury praised “Ze” as “a project so well developed that it’s definitely ready for the next step. A true incoming and fresh author, presenting us a contemporary vision and not stereotypes of her country.

Carlo Ledesma’s sophomore feature fiction is his first wholehearted venture into the domain of horror movies. Although his previous attempt at horror-“Tunnel” (2011) was labelled as such, it didn’t quite manage to raise as much as an eyebrow. With his majorly praised script penned for Avid Liongoren’s animated fantasy drama “Saving Sally” (2016), the curse was broken, and his talent for suspense became obvious. Three years into the film’s success pretty much owned by its writer, Ledesma returned behind the camera with “Sunod”, a dynamic, nail-biting watch with many twists and turns.

The core story might sound familiar – a desperate single mother is trying to keep her severely ill daughter alive at all costs, and when the much awaited wonder happens, it comes with frightening consequences. One is fooled into believing that the film will follow the safe horror patterns,...
