Pinky Promise Films founder and CEO Jessamine Burgum and president Kara Durrett forego a formula, recipe or expectations of the end result when they choose who to work with on their films.
Burgum founded the production company during the 2020 Covid pandemic and gravitated toward Durrett while working together as a financier and producer on 2021’s well-received indie, “Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.” from director Adamma Ebo and starring Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown.

Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane are bringing Mr and Mrs Smith to the small screen, here’s the trailer.
2005 was a good year for action films. Jet Li gave one of his greatest performances opposite Bob Hoskins in Unleashed and Christopher Nolan kicked of his iconic trilogy with Batman Begins.
Another hugely successful film that year was Mr And Mrs Smith. It saw Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play a married couple who, unbeknownst to each other, are both world class assassins. The film originally cast Nicole Kidman to star opposite Pitt, but scheduling conflicts with The Stepford Wives meant she had to drop out.
Doug Liman directed the film from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg, and while it is by no means perfect, it remains a hugely enjoyable, rollicking ride.
Now, Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane have brought the story to the small screen.

Exclusive: Amidst critical raves for her work on The Morning Show Season 3, actress Nicole Beharie has signed with Sugar23 for management.
One of the newest additions to Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning drama, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the cutthroat world of morning news at a time of dramatic cultural change, Beharie joined in September as Chris Hunter, an Olympic gold medalist who takes on the morning anchor position of Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson at the network Uba. When racist emails at her expense emerge, on the part of Uba board member Cybil Richards (Holland Taylor), Christina is put in the uncomfortable position of interviewing the offender on-air about the messages, and how they reflect on the organization.
Beharie joined Jon Hamm, Stephen Fry, and Tig Notaro in coming aboard the series, which was renewed for a fourth season before its third debuted.

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

Swarm, Prime Video’s new limited series from Donald Glover (in his first post-Atlanta project) and Janine Nabers (another Atlanta alum, as well as a writer on Watchmen), stars Dominique Fishback as Dre, a young woman from Houston whose entire life revolves around her fandom of pop icon Ni’Jah. In the first episode, Khalid (Damson Idris), the boyfriend of her sister Marissa (Chlöe Bailey), wonders why Dre is obsessed with someone who, deep down, is just a regular person like everybody else.
“She is not like everybody else,” an indignant Dre replies.

Between Show Me a Hero, The Deuce, Judas and the Black Messiah and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Dominique Fishback could have an Oscar nomination and a small pile of Emmy nods on her resumé. She does not.
But Fishback’s stretch as one of entertainment’s most reliable and overlooked actresses should reach a turning point with Amazon’s Swarm, an indescribable new seven-parter from Janine Nabers and, in his first show since Atlanta, Donald Glover. Holding down nearly every second of the horror-comedy/road-trip hybrid, Fishback is scintillating, giving a performance that had me rewatching laugh-out-loud or heartbreaking beats — and probably demands a full series rewatch to see how each piece of new or expectation-flipping information informs each acting decision.
It’s a performance of deliriously bizarre choices anchoring a show of deliriously bizarre choices, and I wish I could be as confidently effusive about Swarm as I am about its star.

The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.

A few weeks before Black History Month kicked off, IndieWire posed an admittedly quite open question to some our favorite Black filmmakers: Who are your favorite Black filmmakers?
The basic pitch was a bit more involved, asking for picks that run more toward “inspiration” and “impact,” with an eye toward the long history of Black filmmakers. We sent a batch of questions to get the creative juices flowing: Which movies did you watch as a kid that shaped your taste? Which filmmaker’s work has inspired the films you make today? Who is a filmmaker deserving of more attention from other movie lovers?
In short, what films and which filmmakers should everyone know about?
The responses, from Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mariama Diallo, Adamma Ebo, Rashaad Ernesto Green, Carey Williams, and newly minted Sundance winner A.V. Rockwell surpassed all expectations.
The filmmakers we polled took a relatively open prompt and ran with it.

The Oscar races for best picture, director and the four acting categories will be put into focus.
On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the SAG Awards will kick things off with their unveiling of its nominees in film and television (Variety has shared its final predictions).
Afterward, the Directors Guild of America will reveal the five directorial achievements for this year’s upcoming 75th ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, the day before the BAFTA Awards.
You can’t talk about the director race without Steven Spielberg being a part of it, even with the BAFTA snub from the longlist. This year, Spielberg, who won the Oscar prize twice for helming — “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) — finds himself in one of his most substantial positions yet for his deeply personal drama “The Fabelmans.” With three DGA wins and 12 nominations, Spielberg is both the most awarded and most nominated filmmaker in history.

This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

None of these FX half-hours have exploited the possibilities...

Plot: Season 4 finds Earn, Alfred, Darius, and Van back in their hometown. But the question is, has Atlanta changed, or have they?
Review: After the divisive third season of Atlanta premiered back in March, Donald Glover’s acclaimed series ends with the fourth and final season premiering next week. After spending the entirety of the third season in Europe with episodes interspersed with seemingly unrelated stories, the fourth season returns to the narrative style of the first two seasons with some additional tricks up its sleeve. Atlanta has always been an unusual series, so to have it leave the airwaves in a traditional manner was never in the cards. As much as I loved the unexpected nature of the third season, the fourth season is a welcome return to the titular Georgia metropolis for a satisfying conclusion to this comedy-drama-fever dream.

Have you had experience with evangelists who are not really Christian, but focused on making profit from their congregation? That’s why on today’s episode director Adamma Ebo, her sister, producer Adanne Ebo, actor/producer Daniel Kaluuya, and I discuss the satirical dark comedy, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.
The film stars Regina Hall as Trinitie Childs – the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch, who together with her husband Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), once served a congregation in the tens of thousands. But after a scandal forces their church to temporarily close, Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must reopen their church and rebuild their congregation to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”
After playing Randall Pearson on NBC’s “This Is Us” for six seasons, Sterling K. Brown was ready to play a completely different character. So, he took on Lee-Curtis Childs, a closeted pastor accused of sexual misconduct who’s relaunching his church, in Adamma Ebo’s satirical comedy “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”
Styled as a mockumentary, the film follows Lee-Curtis and his wife’s struggle to reopen their church and the public backlash from Lee-Curtis’ scandal. Regina Hall co-stars as Trinitie Childs, who’s also mired in the controversy as she’s forced to stand by her husband. After the #MeToo movement, the movie echoes many stories of real-life celebrities held to account for their bad behavior, but it now hits home even more as those figures attempt to re-emerge into public life.

Labor Day weekend saw blockbusters old and new buoyed by cheap tickets, as was a limited openings like Saloum with multiple sold out screenings at two theaters, including every showtime on Saturday.
Over 3,000 theaters, including IFC Center and Alamo Drafthouse LA, where the French-Senegalese indie film began a qualifying run, offered 3 tickets for National Cinema Day. The promotional event is seeing preliminary box office returns of 24.3 million dollars for Saturday, according to Comscore. That’s 9 ahead of the preceding Saturday, even with discounted admissions, but strongly favored re-releases from Spider Man: No Way Home from last year to Jaws, from 1979, and tentpoles that have been in theaters for weeks and months led by Top Gun: Maverick. The box office was up 100 on Saturday from Friday but skewed heavily to its top ten titles.

In gangster movies, it’s the moment that we see a Mob wife proudly snaking her arms into the sleeves of a gorgeous fur or a decked-out piece of jewelry that sells the point: There’s no such thing as innocence when you’re complicit. Even the people married to monsters have a price. Adamma Ebo’s debut feature Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. (which is now in theaters and streaming on Peacock) is about the Black church, not gangsters, but it has a similar moment, with the embattled...

Exclusive: Daniel Kaluuya is “chilling” on acting following the release of Nope, his latest collaboration with Jordan Peele.
“I like the films to come out and have nothing lined up,” he told Deadline. “You’re showing a new performance, a new way, a new space that you were in at that time, so you gotta let that get out there and spread.”
The London native and Oscar winner has instead moved behind the camera, as a producer, with Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, the first film from his production company 59 out in theaters this weekend.
Written and directed by Adamma Ebo in her feature debut, the film follows the story of Trinity Childs (Regina Hall), the first lady of a prominent Southern Baptist megachurch who attempts to help her pastor-husband, Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), rebuild their congregation and reconcile their faith following a scandal that threatens their elite status.

Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

Plot: A controversial pastor and his wife, attempt to start their ministry again after a scandal nearly destroyed everything for the two.
Review: Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. That’s the title. The new comedic satire directed by Adamma Ebo examines a pastor and his wife dealing with a past scandal. And yes, it’s one that we’ve seen happen to a few famous televangelists and such, now and again. The film stars Sterling K. Brown as Lee-Curtis Childs, pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist Church. His wife, Trinitie Childs, is played by the talented Regina Hall. The two desperately attempt to bring their uplifting gospel words back to his congregation. Yet, with Lee-Curtis’ past and the desire to spend more and more money, the two may not be ready for the big leagues again.

Just in time for the big holiday weekend that “closes the curtain” on the summer blockbusters of 2022, comes a comedy that’s more than a bit different from the usual warm weather farces. That’s because it’s part of the increasingly popular subgenre, the “mockumentary”, which parodies documentary features (that’s the “mock” part). It stretches back more than fifty years, to Woody Allen’s feature directing debut, Take The Money And Run, but most current film fans zero in on Rob Reiner’s This Is Spinal Tap, which inspired one of its stars, Christopher Guest, to create his beloved string of cult classics like Best In Show and A Mighty Wind. “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul” was reviewed by TheWrap out of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
A strong ensemble cast, led by Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall, does a lot of emotional heavy lifting in the otherwise lightweight mockumentary “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul,” a darkly comic drama about a disgraced mega-church preacher and his conflicted wife.
Written, produced and directed by Adamma Ebo, “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul” never really goes anywhere unexpected in following Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Brown) and his painfully drawn-out road to a comeback after a sex scandal involving a group of teenage boys.
As Lee-Curtis’ wife Trinitie, Hall provides the movie with its strongest emotional hook, as her performance suggests a lot about her conflicted character that Ebo’s scenario doesn’t fully consider. And by framing the movie as a fake fly-on-the-wall documentary — directed by fictional filmmaker Anita Bonet — Ebo generally...

After garnering international acclaim for his on-screen performances in “Get Out,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Black Panther,” Daniel Kaluuya is now behind the camera to produce the satirical comedy “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”
The Focus Features film, which premieres Sept. 2 in theaters and on Peacock, follows the comeback journey of Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, played by Sterling K. Brown, and his wife, Trinitie, played by Regina Hall, after a scandal threatens their elite status.
Kaluuya, who produced the film through his company 59, sees the comedy as elevating the mockumentary genre and was involved in the project when writer and directed Adamma Ebo floated the idea of having “a Regina Hall type” play Trinitie.
For Kaluuya, who was giving script notes to the likes of British playwriting royalty Jack Thorne and Lucy Kirkwood by the time he was a teenager, producing comes naturally — and is something that he plans to continue.

Actors Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall are linking up to bring a megachurch powerhouse couple to life in "Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul." The mockumentary film has some strong names behind it, with both Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya serving as producers with their respective companies.
"Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul." is a feature-length adaptation of writer and director Adamma Ebo's 2018 short film of the same name. The story follows Pastor Lee-Curits Childs (Brown) and his wife, First Lady Trinitie Childs (Hall), amid the fallout of a scandal that dismantles their status as leaders of their congregation.
While the film sounds like it could easily be centered around real people, "Honk For Jesus: Save Your Soul." is not based on a true story. It is, however, inspired by real life. Read on to learn about the inspiration behind the film, which hits theaters and Peacock on Sept.

Last weekend was the third lowest grossing of the year, bringing the box office to lows not seen since January. The 40 drop was the largest of the year for a weekend not following the release of an MCU movie, and that was despite three new films going wide. With no new theatrical exclusives going wide this weekend, we can expect another dip at the box office, though the holiday and the high profile re-releases should keep the box office from dropping as much as it did last weekend. Nonetheless, barring 2020, this will be the weakest Labor Day weekend since the 1990s, and this comes a year after the fourth highest grossing Labor Day weekend of all time, led by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which broke the Labor Day Weekend record with its 94.7 million four-day gross. In contrast, nothing this weekend will even beat the top grosser...

“Marriage is the only way to prosperity and the only way into the kingdom of God,” exclaims Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), the pastor of a Southern Baptist megachurch, “Take it from me… I am the prophet with the beautiful wife and the gorgeous Bugatti!” The crowd of worshippers laugh and applaud, either glad or ignorant about their role in bankrolling a charlatan. Lee-Curtis and his wife Trinitie (Regina Hall) use religion not for the community but for their own pursuit of wanton materialism. This is the satirical conceit of Adamma Ebo’s Honk for Jesus. Save your Soul. and it lays it on very thick within the opening half hour.
For example, during a tour of their cavernous walk-in wardrobe, Trinitie talks of avoiding extravagance as Lee-Curtis tries on a pair of glittery turquoise loafers and a yellow trilby hat. Another scene sees the couple sitting on gilded thrones.

Will Spider-Man be able to save the box office … again?
Yes, you’re reading this in August of 2022. And yes, there’s actually a chance that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will return to the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts … roughly eight months after the superhero adventure swooped into cinemas and revived the theater industry. Sony is rereleasing the film — which has already grossed an astounding 804 million in North America and 1.9 billion globally — in 3,850-plus theaters over Labor Day weekend, this time with a glorious 11 minutes of extra footage. Thank you, Peter Parker!
How, pray tell, is it possible that December release “Spider-Man: No Way Home” could end up presiding over domestic box office charts in the final stretch of summer? Well, it’s not that surprising if you consider the reality that studios have all but abandoned the big screen in August after ticket sales rebounded at the start of popcorn season.

There’s no denying it: the star-packed, film-crammed, totally wild fall movie-going season is back. While the previous two pandemic years have provided plenty of new films across all seasons and tastes, 2022 marks the first time in a long time that our most-anticipated list of films coming out this fall season pushed up to 60 titles.
Even more edifying: the range of films on offer. Of course, this preview includes a number of fall festival premieres and “awards” titles, but we’ve got a range of smaller picks, genuine curiosities, and even the odd remake to get excited about. We’ve got Sundance favorites and Cannes debuts, a donkey with a heart of gold, a pair of highly anticipated superhero movies, and Steven Spielberg revisiting his childhood (again! and we’re all better for it!). The Harvey Weinstein case gets a film, Rosaline gets her due, and a bunch of rich...

Zurich Film Festival has revealed the lineup for its Hashtag section, which is devoted to “a topic that is trending on social media,” the event said Thursday. This year’s section screens films under the title #MyReligion, and deals with “questions of faith, euphoria and modern deities.”
“Whether in the U.S.A., Russia or the Middle East, we are seeing a comeback of religions,” Christian Jungen, Zff artistic director, said. “This often leads to conflicts in coexistence within multicultural societies. That’s why this year we are concentrating our efforts on the topic of faith, its merits and its dark sides.
But we are also highlighting the substitute religions that are out there now for secular people, such as the Tiktok cult.”

Focus Features has dropped a funny first trailer for the upcoming film Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.
In their Sundance review, RogerEbert.com says: “Hall and Brown help us perceive the many masks of these people, and Hall is especially good at the razor-sharp “bless your heart” niceness that has her fighting for pride and an image. Brown gets some great comedy out of his intensity, but is also able to let the true pain shine through. The best moments in “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.” can hit you in the gut—like a laugh, or a knife.”
From director Adamma Ebo, check out this first look now.

Sometimes magnetic, sometimes awkward and disjointed, Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul spotlights a unique culture: that of black mega churches in the southern USA. As the movie presents it, this is a world where pastors insist they need the most ridiculously expensive, colorful and showy suits imaginable, and their “first lady” wives seek out bizarre hats to make an equally status-based impression. The whole Christianity thing sometimes feels like an afterthought.
Writer/director Adamma Ebo, who collaborated with her sister and producer Adanne Ebo, grew up attending these kinds of churches in Atlanta, Georgia. She not only has an eye for the absurdity of the culture, but a sense for how the community relies on these churches to help define their identity, and how a lack of integrity on the part of leaders affects everyone.
